One possible application is to put a web server on the embedded device, store the data on its disk, and let people access their data with more organization than a hierarchical filesystem. Say that multiple events occur where I dial 911 to demand (my tax money paid) police officers to enter into a stategically questionable location. If by some turn of bad luck, every one of these units happen to be ambushed, then it would be pretty sad for the citizens of this country, as they can no longer expect dependable police service. So, if the police does second guess the validity of 911 calls, ask yourself, whose fault is it? Given sufficient funds, the entire commercial sector can effectively (and literally) burn down the law firm that proposes to illegalize stock trading. In the United States of America, I am not allowed to perform certain songs, such as the Birthday Song, unless I buy the rights to perform it for a certain number of times.

    The system should be changed because people do not have the right to perpetual or long term copyright. If you say that property rights should not be taken away, an also the system should not be changed in any way that could take away property rights, then you should be ashamed of yourself.

    Once, slaves were property in this country. It was a crime to steal a slave from a master. However, no one who advocates any sense of morality can say that anyone should be allowed to own slaves. If you think that one should not take away property rights from an individual regardless of the reason, then you are promoting the slavery of women and children in certain countries this day.

    Knowing that it is illegal to copy certain information does not make it immoral. If legality implies morality, then many atrocities are moral and just.

    For "intellectual property" in general, it is atrocious to say that companies have exclusive rights to information and ideas. One factor that attributes to the HIV epidemic in Africa is the persistence of drug makers to assert their "property rights" and force all organizations to either pay obscene royalties or shut down operations that attempt to take money away from these drug companies.

    zliu2@student.gsu.edu

    I will also encourage defendents to plead not guity and also to generate as much paperwork as possible during the trial. It is beneficial to them because errors in the system generally favor them. The more paperwork, the greater the probability of an error.

    The most important thing I can do is to encourage people to act. It is imperative that everyone knows that if the police wants you to die, you have nothing to lose by killing the police. The scenerio where the police does kill you involves you being labeled as a criminal and your family being stigmatized. If you do not die, you will be charged with a crime and, since the police can create evidence, will also be convicted. In the scenerio where you do kill the police, you can either be captured, in which case the most likely event is that you will be executed. But before capture, the situation becomes the same as before, when the police wants to kill you. Finally, if you evade capture, you are a free man.

    Finally, I must make sure that everyone can organize in a manner that does not comprimise the security of efforts. This entails the creation of a darknet that allows heirarchical communication between cells. Also, since the government is a concentrated entity, guerrila tactics will work against them more effectively than them against us.

    In closing, it is your civic duty to take responsibility for your own sovereignty. Do not allow corruption to exist when it is within your power to destroy it.

Perhaps if more concrete evidence of an Anti-OSS movement comes about, there will be many who will need either more evidence or will argue that Open Source Software deserves to be retaliated against. Again, it is a matter of faith regarding how much evidence one needs to come to a conclusion, and which conclusion. It is also faith that is responsible for most human misery without much gain in the end. So, is it worth it to discard evidence in the name of faith and peace?

  19. Siggraph 2004 on Sharp LCD Display with 1,000,000:1 Contrast Ratio · · Score: 2, Interesting
    There was a paper presented in SIGGRAPH 2004 about two High Dynamic Range Display Systems (PDF*). One system was a projector shining into a LCD. It is theoretically possible to have a contrast ratio of c*d:1 where the projector has a ratio of c:1 and the LCD has a ratio of d:1. I have found a projector that has a ratio 7000:1 and a LCD television with a ratio of 900:1. Combining them could possibly give a contrast ratio of 6,300,000:1. I believe there is some merit in having c and d be close to each other, so this theoretical 6.3 million to one ratio should be taken with a mountain of salt.

    It should be duely noted that the projector-LCD system presented in the link has a measured ratio of about 54,000:1 as opposed to the theoretical 200,000:1 ratio. However, I plan to build a $3000 display with a ratio of about 70,000:1. The projector-LCD systems have the advantage of being able to take high precision illumination values. You effectively double the amount of information that can be fed into the display by having two "screens" (the projector and the LCD). Perhaps those who want to experiment with HDR imaging and do not mind a bit of bluring should consider building one of these $1500-$5000 setups, as opposed to those 100,000:1 or 1,000,000:1 displays.

    y = x (3/2 - (a/2) x x);

    where the last line is exactly what Carmack had. I would assume that the magic number line somehow performs \yet another\ iteration somehow. If $x$ was initially equal to unity, then

    y = (3/2 - a/2).

    If the integer value |i| is what I think it is (a number that does not cross floating point number field boundaries), then the right shift would effectively halve it. The subtraction would be similar to a subtraction of a/2 from 3/2.

  23. Attacks Against Christians on Equal Time For Creationism · · Score: 1, Interesting

    1.) Many Christians are not moral at all. This is because they act according to doctrine just so that they can avoid punishment. This punishment can either come from their community, institutions, and what they believe to be supernatural forces. Morality is not a bartering system where one can obtain favors for actions. Since many Christians believe the contrary, they are immoral.
    2.) Christians are against Capitalism at its core. Capitalism is superior to systems such as Merchantilism, Fascism, and Communism because it assumes certain forces that can not be controlled by intelligent beings. For example, the dynamics of a three party trading system can become chaotic and can not be described by finite and exacting sequences of statements. Christians are of the belief that either chaos is evil or that it is possible for an intelligent being to control the forces of a system. For those who believe that chaos is evil, not much can be said for them besides the fact that they are wrong. For the second group, these people are the proponents of managed systems that require intelligent beings to control it. Such systems have been proven to be ineffective (at best). No Christian can believe in a chaos driven system and any God at the same time and call themselves followers of logic.
    3.) Christians tend to perform more poorly than Atheists, Agnostics, and Jews in academic settings. Even though the main reason for this is the population of Christians is rather diverse, as compared to the other three groups mentioned, it must be noted still.
    4.) Christians are fundamentally against progress. This can be seen in such acts as the current debate on evolutionary theory, the burning of Rome, and the persecution of Galileo. The argument that Christians are against evolutionary theory has been established in this thread already. The burning of Rome, originally attributed to Nero, was actually initiated by Christian terrorists. This act was by far the most successful terrorist action in the history of mankind. Not only did it discredit the leader at that time, it also gave tremendeous backing toward the Christian cause. Because Nero persecuted the Christians after the burning, many backed the Christians when public opinion swayed toward the belief that Nero caused the burning. As for Galileo, that was yet another example of the adversion toward truth that Christians have. Galileo only wanted to publish a paper that there were moons orbiting Jupiter, a rather beneign topic. But because of the ramifications of such an assertion, the Christians persecuted Galileo to the same degree that their martyr was persecuted. This goes to show that Christians are not morally, intellectually, or spiritually superior to any other group. Since Christians are not superior, there should be no reason why they should be given any credence.
