Back then it was the same as it is now. You could SLI Rig two voodoo cards and get a F'd up frame rate. Graphics were severely washed out, but your Frames were higher than anyone else. Same deal here. There really isnt immediate industry application , other than video editing ( My Parahelia card works nicely for that ). So its a Gamers card. Go into a gamers IRC channel and ask which video card do you have?
Itll be a be F'ing pissing match about who has the most expensive card, typically by individuals that are 12 to 15 years in age.
Well then, to be totally pure on the issue of Microsoft stealing shit, lets get Steve Jobs involved in this conversation. Shall we?
Yes they are capable, Yes they do bad stuff. Yes they bribe people to do things in their favor, ask Mike Rowe, previous Owner of MikeRoweSoft.com. It was an honest business he was making, and rather than give the kid a break, he was sued by M$.
When those whinos at M$ dont get their way, the bitch, then buy whatever company best profits them. I know that Larry E is bad for his corporate take over of PeopleSoft, but M$ far exceeds their limits in that arena. Earlier Slashdot article today in trying to blackmail a European company. Its business practices like that , that give M$ a bad name.
Gates, dont you have enough money? Martin , I know you read this stuff....call his ass up and tell him to quit it.
Bah.....Another monumental piece of ever telling bullshit for Gates to shove onto his pile of failures. Whod have though that Word Macros could be used as a vulnerability? LOL. Well, if he actually got Tabbed browsing in there without actually pissing off Mozilla community it MIGHT be ok. But that status is holding on how many vulnerabilities are released for it the day it comes out. More than 10 means I wont touch it.
Any why should I , firefox is fine.
This distribution is a decent one. Most of my convertees ( windows users that I convinced to ditch windows ) I started them with Xandy. Its a good all around release. Unlike Linspire, its maintains a decent repository for no extra charges. Most 3rd party stuff compiles on it ok.
Of all the Debian carryovers, its number 2 on my list, 2nd only to Zen Linux, my current Debian clone favorite.
Actually really here you go
1. Active Directory to Samba 4
2. Exchange to Exim, Postfix, Sendmail, Qmail, or OpenXchange - pick one.
3. NTFS to Reiser.
1. Too Windowsy, No linux geek is his right mind would espouse to using it, at least not the ones I know.
2. Its a Debian clone, if you turn around and try to change sources.list , then update it. Youll break a number of things. This happens similiarly with Xandros, but most of Xandros's own repositories arent bad.
3. It costs money. If im going to buy a distribution, Im going to buy an industry level solution (Suse and/or NLD). Robertson has a good idea, but not enough umph behind it.
I have to aggree with mormop, a year of uptime means updates that cant possibly be applied. I never have to reboot my systems after they are updated. I never have to reboot my systems after software is installed. As a matter of fact, I run CrossOver Office on my wifes systems and theres that nifty little button that says "Simlute a Windows Reboot" just to fake the system into believing its been rebooted. Im sorry, Windows is a Joke with the way it functions somtimes.
Its a box, you have to spend 500 dollars on top of the 200 you pay to get the OS, just to get an adequate Office Suite, Office Productivity, and Sensible Operating system addons, just to keep it safe. Which is total bullshit in my opinion. I buy and OS, then I have to pay more money to get the stuff I need to run it properly.
Go cut down an ISO of Fedora or Mandrake, its free, it comes with all the productivity software you need, and it doesnt cost any extra.
Its not rocket science people, its COST EFFECTIVENESS that makes linux desireable, on top of its STABILITY.
Here let me translate this so you can understand it it more defined terms...
Using uh google search ta support yo' arguments? iz ya kidding? Alls dis here proves iz dere iz mo' sights wiff those werdz in dem. Nothing else.
what do exchange an' send mail gots ta do wiff linux an' Windows? Nothing.
peep at da opporating systems. Since MS as declared da IE iz uh core part o' da OS, then ya need ta count those fo' windows as well.
Look at da exploits, how many o' each cn be done remotly? If ya need ta be sitting at da geekbox ta exploit da bug, then it iz not very sever.
what do ya do wiff yo' OS? I've seen windows boxes wiff over uh year o' uptime. sho 'nuff, jes like mammy.

Now then, back to the semantics of this post. Exchange and Sendmail are just examples, If I attacked as a whole all of Windows vs All of Linux , it would be astronomically larger in scope. So here you go......
Results 1 - 10 of about 1,480,000 for windows vulnerabilities. (0.22 seconds)
Results 1 - 10 of about 1,530,000 for linux vulnerabilities. (0.07 seconds)
My argument wasnt that one system over another has vulnerabilities more than the other. My argument was that Linux is a more stablely maintained system, patches are more timely and with a lot less ramification than Windows.
Back to stability , who here has a windows box they havent rebooted in over a year?
This is an argument that can largely be debated on a variety of levels. Honestly? Linux and ultimately unix of any flavor has just as many vulnerabilities as Windows does. Difference -- typically most of those vulnerabilities are patched and assessed before they take affect.
Just do a search for Sendmail Vulnerabilities on google.
Result = Results 1 - 10 of about 143,000 for Sendmail Vulnerabilities. (0.39 seconds).
for Microsoft Result = Results 1 - 10 of about 364,000 for Microsoft Exchange Vulnerabilities. (0.18 seconds).
You can have this discussion for days on end, and really, what the *nix community has up on the M$ community is knowledge and ability. No, there arent any viruses that are successfully written for *nix. Spyware isnt even remotely a concept to a linux user. And most vulnerabilities get patched as quickly as they are given POC. Does this mean that linux users patch any more or less than Windows users, no. But we do it more effeciently and with greater success.
Stability wise , come on. Ive got a redhat 7.3 box that baring powerfailures hasnt been rebooted in over a year. Its a good box, it would probably take an Arkady Rossovich low yeild nuke on its head and still live, and I dont know of any windows box thats able to admit that.
Of course, opnions are like assholes, every human being on the face of this planet has one and is entitled to it. So, Brother, I shall fight for your right to have opinions. (No, I was going to say babies, but I doubt his name is Stan).
Still it seems feasible that they would care about all opinions, not just the small subset of opinions they develop internally. Windows is great and other bull!@#$ like that. Of course there have been on occasion Micro$oft developers that have admitted the product is vulnerable or that they admit they took shortcuts and so forth....so really what does their opinion matter....
There are thousands of each. Microsoft is more than likely pointing the KEY players involved in development.
Go on Gates, leave Linus alone and let him work. Geeze.
I wonder if Bill Gates actually dares to read sources like Slashdot , Newsforge, and so forth. If he knew what people "really" thought (Ballmer and even McGrath for that matter as well ), would he say the things he does or campaign as much as he does to defeat us.
Of course, who would really dare admit they work for M$ and post in here, surely theyd get eaten up alive.
And see what he says, Im sure , most certain actually that if Fats was to review a game, that he would have some opinion that was negative based on game performance.
Of course as with the case of Fatal1ty, Combat Carl, and most of those others, Dazed420 from clan |dc, and zOdd from =V= , they run their games at lowest rez with no affects so as to get the maximum amount of frame rate and speed. So certainly any indication that a game would lax in performance theyd clearly Dog it in a heartbeat.
Thank you for validating my argument Choggi. But of course I see why he makes the argument. Most Die Hard Linux users that I know, and I know a few, dont have a problem supporting developments like Transgaming. I dont feel that they are anti-wine, but more wine with the nessecary tweaks to get a game running on the system. Do I wish that all games had a native linux installer, you better believe I do. It would make my life , and everyone else's life alot easier. There certainly wouldnt be these large fights over which game goes one way and which game(s) go another. Of course I substantially assume that some very good games (Rise of nations, Age of Empires and all of its derivatives, and so forth) wont ever have native linux installers with them, the companies that produce them are expressedly owned by M$, this of course also dooms them from ever running under any emulator/wrapper application, like Cedega or Wine. What does that mean for guys / gals like us. We miss out because M$ wont support us. Why? Because M$ hates us and wishes we would go away and stop taking their market share away.
Im not too young a gamer to remember that there were games that were released that had OS/2 installers on them for that very reason. Support of the community. But then its never seen that way by Gates , Ballmer and the rest of his Zombies. Ce La Vie.
Still The notion that I should not support applications who try to help us in the gaming community, is asinine.
And to honestly validate the digression argument used with cedega and wine. I run a fairly high end card on my system, when I play FPS I "realistically" get a few less frames on say Doom 3 ( not much more than 10 at worst ) , and on other games such as WarHammer 40k, I get a better frame rate than I did on my windows partition. If this is all I have to deal with is minot frame rate differences, then Ill get over it. The object isnt for me to have the most uber frame rate, but a game thats playable and enjoyable. Isnt that what the rest of us what? Or is FPS gaming still about how many Frames per second you can get?
Ok Windex, untie your panties, and try to drink some Herbal tea, mebbe itll help the PMS your experiencing. Then, calm down, go out and give Transgaming techs a few measley dollars of your money, instead of waiting for the industry to catch up, because while largely decentralized as it is, almost segemented in places, if a wrapper/emulator allows me to play with a few , VERY FEW, displaced frames, then im happy, and you should be too.
Break out the Yanni or Enya or something, and try to chill. Anger Management buddy, it works...trust me.
Neverwinter Nights, UT and its variants, Doom and its variants, Quake and its variants, Wolfenstein and its variants, Kohan and its variants, (all of which I own and support, if someone makes a linux port sold with a product I preorder it IMMEDIATELY). I can only hope and pray for Dragonshard to have a linux installer to go with it, what else have I left out?
IF and only IF atari continues its current motif, then great. But RTSs like Age series, Total War, Empire Earth ( that Titan 2.0 engine is the shiz ), So I guess I should give up on playing RTSs because none of the decent ones come with a decent native installer.
Freeciv forever.....woohoo.

The modding instructions come out, so that I can "upgrade" my token Mandrake box?

I hope it doesnt affect the release of any of their titles. Dragonshard ive been waiting on for a while.
See my post down to the None post and a little toss up I had with Windex. I addressed that issue there.
Who uses vinyl anymore? (Braces himself for the barrage of attacks)

Yes, God, thank you for your input.
Your still going to be bound by Cedega's working game list only. That aside, Ive had fairly good success with Suse, Fedora, and Gentoo.
Down with the Winblows WerMachten!!!!!!!!!
