  1. It will take commercialization & Apple on Where Are The Edges Of Today's Technology World? · · Score: 1

Many people here on Slashdot seem to hate the ideas of capitalism. This may be partially due to the overwhelming "Open Source is King" feeling here. But whatever the next "big thing" is in technology you can bet that it will take a company like Apple to innovate it and wow the public with it, and to market it, package it, and call it a pretty name.

I think the most recent innovation in technology that we have seen push the edge of technology is Music/MP3 technology. Music is now cheap to "own", cheap to play (even if you buy an FM receiver or tape player from Walmart for $4.96), and finally: easy to organize.

At the time of the 1st iPod, it truly was somewhat of a miracle in size, ease of use, and connectivity. So, the iPod is at it's height of useable technology today. I think the next year will bring technology pushing the integration of audio and video in this way: ease of use, miniaturization, and storage capacity PLUS organization. It will be the way that a company like Apple (or Apple itself) can market this technology to the masses to gain acceptance.

Besides, a trend towards SATA would mean a move away from ATA, which means people would upgrade less component wise. I like standards. SATA added another standard to the long list. I wish everything were just firewire 800 samer connector interior as exterior, That way, we could have smaller enclosures, no confusion of what end to use, what cable to use, and with which device to use it. Making a cable ronded and sheilded (like 1394 cables are) would also cut down on clutter inside and outside a box!

They had an interview with Moller, inventor of the skycar. He's thge one that thinks we will all one day fly in car planes that vertically take off and use GPS to fly them safely.

Has anyone ever seen an interview with Moller and thought that you were looking at a con man? He has gotten over 200 billion (YES BILLION) over his lifetime in funding. All interviews with him just remind me of talking to Quixtar (AMway) rep.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think we will NEVER have flight cars? It would be too dangerous. Cars are confined to accidents (for the most part) to the road.

Unless some kind of anti gravity technology that doesn't require fuel and has a 99.9% of not failing (causing falling) I don't believe we will ever have "air cars". I don't see much potential for air cars over helicopters for anything beyond the military.

  6. Why this is good for someone like Apple... on Who Owns The Facts? · · Score: 1
On Yahoo and eBay auctions I see people selling Apple Computer Manuals for $10 - $20.

First, this HAS to be a violation of copyright law.

Second, it is against NDA's to hand out Apple Part #'s. As a developer, I pay for the right to get Apple to mail me official documentation (more recently in PDF form on a CD)

eBay doesn't crack down on the sales of these manuals either, but they fall under the "CDR Duplication/copying" clause in the "Auctions That Aren't Allowed Section"

I would find it indefensible for someone to say that they are allowed, without consent, to print an Apple logo or even the Apple name in the Garamond or Lucida Font (and have it be associated with Apple Computer) on anything and sell it for a profit. (Where no licensing fees are given to Apple)

Further, the sale of these manuals promotes fraud. Many people buy these manuals for units that are still under warranty or AppleCare. AN INDIVIDUAL CAN NOT work on his own machine under warranty. (Even if qualified) Apple gives you specific things that you can upgrade or replace in a list called; "User Installable Parts" If a customer works on a unit, they will often not tell the tech they go to get it fixed with, under warranty. It is typically the case, that the "novice with the manuals such as this" has ruined the unit even further, or at the very least, cost more time in repair. Repair costs the service provider often has to eat.

Besides, most manuals are on the web.

I would hope that Apple uses this new law to end manual sales on eBay and Yahoo.

While the iPod has definitely added to the bottomline and to the recognition of Apple design and ease of integration, it has yet to actually be the single contributing source to a profitable quarter. In all profitable quarters since the iPod introduction, Apple has always posted a bigger gan that net from iPod sales alone.

I think Apple's current roadmap and processor line is pretty impressive, especially now that it's backed by someone who actually can produce: IBM.

I do agree though that it's time for Apple to wow us again. I think it's time for Apple to give us a TIVO iPod with Color LCD. I can't fathom where there's innovation elsewhere that the mass public and not just Apple users want to see...

I have sent money in the past; rather blindly. I have been able to catch two sellers by just pretending to be girls interested in them, through IM. I got their actual phone numbers and even got one ready to pick me up and meet me for a "date" LOL.

Of course it was a lot of hassle.

If you can catch a criminal at their own game - that's justice.
