Computergeeks.com is a really good source for small parts - really good prices too - they don't always stock the screws but generally they have them in stock
Weather REALLY affects cable in my area - every time the temp gets below 20 or the rain gets a little heavy the lines around here get wet - The thing about Satellite is that you call in and BOOM CREDIT NO QUESTIONS ASKED. You call the cable company and have to jump through a hoop on fire dowsed in gasoline to get a credit.
I often google problematic eBayers and scammers email addresses - I would say 1/2 the time I get good results and 1 in 10 I get VERY interesting results.
For instance - one time I had an eBayer email me telling me I should be ashamed for selling a Bang & Olufsen turntable at the price I was selling it at. Turns out - it was HIS that he sold to someone in Charlotte (nearby) - they in turn sold it to a Pawn Shop - I bought it for a deal (under $100) - come to find out - he only got $35 for it on eBay - he had left negative feedback for the buyer because the buyer made him sell it to him (he didn't have a reserve. To make a long story longer - It turns out he starts harassing my bidders, telling them not to buy from me. I google and find something similar to this with his email address attached.
Gay male looking in Colorado (Denver Area) for discreet meetings - no kinky stuff but very adventurous. Since he had bid in my auction (fraudulently) I instantly ended the auction and made him the winner by cancelling other bids. I threatened to post the information to several websites and his feedback. I never heard from him again.
I have ALWAYS googled anyone's email address before I met them from match.com - although usually a girl's email address won't show up with any results.
I occasionally google my email address and always get new stuff - usually 4-5 of my slashdot replies show up.
I'm with you - I hate receiving in my daily searches USB hubs that match extrememac - when extrememac only makes one specific hub I am looking for. Turns out the main offenders use an old trick of making white text on the white background. Some sellers have almost every single Mac product ever made in their auctions. I fI ever see that I report em at the URL above.
I do it on purpose ... form of keyword spamming
on
Bad Spelling Pays on eBay
·
· Score: 4, Interesting
Since eBay says that adding terms to your auctions, that are unrelated is called; "keyword spamming" - I purposely don't spell some words right in the description so I can get others who may not spell words right. Some terms in the Apple category are often spelled incorrectly.
AMD and Apple/IBM have started to pull away in quality - in terms of actual work done per clock cycle. While it's true that the average Joe or PHB might not know any better-..."
Started to pull away in quality??? I would say that Apple has always been ahead in quality (sure there have been quality issues - but most Apple buyers are assholes and attorneys)
Apple has always been better (easier, faster) at individual tasks such as audio editing, video editing, and overall ease of use. They also FAR surpass ANY PC in terms in longevity... I know of a finger's count few PCs that still work from 1984, that in use, or for that matter, still useable. I see Mac SE's from 1985 almost every day - still working after 19 years!
The megahertz myth is honestly less about performance as whole - it is performance perception.
Case in point - two computers are taken into a retirement home. (An iMac and similarly priced/styled PC) They are told where the internet connection is and told to get onto the internet - the average Mac is up in 17 minutes out of the box - the average PC is never able to get online or goes well beyond an hour. Conclusion - ease of productivity - is perceived speed.
I find it very original that someone is genius enough to allow me to play all arcade games pre 1997, all NES, all SNES, all N64 games, all gameboy, all virtual boy, all sega: saturn, genesis, game gear, all TurboGraphix 16, all Atari, all Intellivision, all Coloecovision, all Paystation I, all playstation II games right on my Mac. So - it can be different and original and not be a new idea.
I would also challenge your theory of lots of good games. One of the best selling systems of all time : The Atari 2600 - had few if any GOOD or GREAT games - with the majority being rushed - most games from bandwagoners just copied code, made something flash on the screen and called it a game.
This is the same thing that happens in the PC World that doesn't really happen with Macs. Most of the software out on the PC is just poorly written garbage. Most Mac software has careful and optimized code.
The playstation (by my own estimate) has about 50 games that are original in both concept and design> Aren't there close to 3500 titles?
There ARE studios out there pushing the envelope with new technology - such as Eye Toy and even Konami with Dance Dance Revolution. There are games that are to come to market that interact with your blood sugar, your mood, your heart rate, etc.
Most of the innovation today comes from the hardware used to interact with the game, rather than the software it self. This is why light gun games were so popular and continue to be some of the only games still produced. Notice at your next arcade/putt putt/or movie visit - all the games aren't original in concept - rather original in the hardware design - light guns/skis and poles/snowmobiles/jet skis, paddles, bicycles, etc.
Actually there have been quite a few original games out there in the past few years. Pretty much one or two per system:
I think one of the most unique game designing companies has been skunk studios. Why they haven't been able to score a deal with the PSX or Xbox is beyond me.
They have two unique games: Spelvin & Sveerz
The concept is common word and tone/sound match up - but the gameplay is VERY original.
The new Mario Cart on the Gamecube is a really unique spin on racing as well.
Tetrisphere for the N64 was a unique spin on Tetris.
Call Of Duty is so realistic that it too is unique.
Pearls Game is a unique PDA and Internet Flash Game.
You also fail to see that repackaing old games is actually original : MAME or Intellivision Lives for instance.
"The fact is that the cheaters are cheapening the value of your degree. What you are paying for when you pay the big bucks for the tuition is the reputation of the school. When some dumbass cheater gets out without knowing what they are supposed to know, they harm the school's reputation that is on your diploma. They are cheapenng your degree."
This is life - life, love, politics, and business are all about being able to rise above ALL adversity (even cheaters) and still come out on top.
I had someone cheat off of me a lot in high school; in multiple classes. Now, here's the unfair part, because the teachers and school district disliked my father (he had sued the school system) - I got no credit - where the guy that cheated off of me would get half credit. (yes it was proven this was being done)
School/Education nowadays is relatively meaningless. The only way to learn is to self improve and seek enrichment. Few businesses nowadays care about education - they care more about how you produce. If someone cheats on you later in life, you can root them out in subtle ways and know that they aren't producing MORE than you. Cheaters are often ass kissers too. Your goal is to be well liked but free thinking and independent - in other words - like for who you are - not what you say you are.
"eBay/Paypal is already doing this with their points system, where you can purchase items on eBay and pay with a combination of cash/credit and eBay/Paypal points. Convincing an ISP to issue automatic BitPass accuonts to their customers upon signup, for example, would be another way of seeding the market."
You still have to sign up for the ebay points program AND the points aren't interoperable with the parent gold points program. eBay points was more of a way to aquire your email/contact info than anything else - a way that eBay could circumvent their contact information privacy. (Not an eBay hater, just a reply to this part of your statement)
Micropayments will only work in the manner in which you stated - mass adoption through - automatic signup.
I also think a great way is a rebate program - you contribute to a site that charges micropayments - you are rebated micropayments to use. For instance: Slashdot could charge - then if you contribute by name you are rebated your micropayment. If you are moderated 5+ you are awarded a micropayment.
Why do you think we don't see lots and lots of 20 30 and 40 GB hard drive players? Apple co creates/researches with Toshiba and apparently now with Hitachi.
The iPod OS is very slick and even though there are close to similar copies - none are as easy - no other player has the games that I'm aware of either
Lastly, they license the implementation of Quicktime AAC - while AAC is open itself - the secure component of it Apple owns.
I'd somewhat agree - a nice Great Pyrenees would work fine - and actually be loyal and friendly, plus add an interaction component. These dogs can carry people too. Tibetans actually ride them!
This would serve much like a Tauntan in Empire Strikes Back.
That said, I honestly would hate to see any life shed, so robots would reduce that risk.
"[High Price]...It sells for almost 100,000 yen ($941) and it still sold out. There are no products out there that can say that."
Apple says that about the iPod all the time. They sold 740K of a high priced product (vs the competition) and usually upon ANY introduction it makes (PowerBook, iBook, G5) it sells the first two shipments in the channel in a matter of days.
Anybody that makes a cool a product (regardless of price) will sell out.
If Sony releases that iPod/Playstation/VideoPod cell phone, all in one - they'll sell it out within a matter of hours for several months straight.
Of course you could - split your video signal - one to the TV - one to the DVR. I do it all the time with my iMac to make educational videos - a playstation would be no different. I used to do it to show my brother how to get past a level in Fester's Quest on the Nintendo (except to a VCR)
The Newton is really neither. It wasn't really a money loser for Apple (but wasn't a money maker either) - we also have to consider that the CREATORS of the Palm and later Handspring moved on from the original Newton team. The latest Treo is essentially what I think the Newton would have become.
Three of Apple's biggest misses are actually some of the coolest products they've ever introduced:
1) Apple Set Top Box - it was going to be a Tivo/Media Server - almost 10 YEARS before they are starting to become mainstream. I have one of these boxes and was able to get some content working on them. Apparently Apple tried to market these to resort hotels (the info I've been able to run on the box was for DisneyWorld Hotels)
more info can be found at www.applefritter.com
2) Apple Macintosh TV - this was a really cool looking Mac/TV combo that was sold in the education market that is underpowered but again WAY before the time of this type of integration (by about 3 years)
3) G3 All In One - this was only distributed in the education market and was actually a better iMac (had PCI slots, floppy, zip, CD, A/V in and out and three NORMAL RAM slots) I use this unit as my TV - it has great speakers and I have recently been able to upgrade it to 1Ghz G4. This was out 8 months before the iMac
Skunk Studios makes some great games. I like Sveerz and Spelvin - both are very original and very fun to play. I like the worldwide score database as well. The games they make also have amazingly cool audio and flash effects.
I wrote about this in my journal this morning; my most interesting (not necessarily weird) gift was a $1000 iTunes Music Store gift certificate. Read my journal for the coolest gift I gave:
I think Robbie The Robot was a marvel of film/makeup/design for the 50's. Eventhough clearly a man in a suit, still one of the coolest and most functional futuristic robots ever. Also the robot from Metropolis was a wonder of makeup and design by Fritz Lang.
You cannot be denied satellite TV. Condo and Apertment regimes may TRY to tell you you can't put up a satellite but they can't do so. I fought this battle with my condo regime and won.
And technically you can contruct something "unobtrusive" to face the proper direction. This means in MY case a 12 foot pole.
Shattered Glass with Hayden Christiansen was overlooked. In some ways it was a better Catch Me If You Can. A story about a serial liar.
Has anyone else seen this?
I liked this movie (and Catch Me If You Can)... they relate to a website I do work for: www.jackwhispers.com - a website dedicated to a serial liar in the Mac community.
Thank you for that (good explanation)- the post wasn't intended as a troll or flamebait, but I knew it would get modded that way. (Unjustly)
That said, and to address the other posts. Why does one have to CARRY THE RING on their body. Just put it on a stick. That says little about Gandalf or the elves self control. It's just something to ME is an insurmountable fact.
For those addressing sounds in space vs plot elements - they are separate. MOST people don't KNOW that sounds can't be heard in a vaccuum AND how do you KNOW in that galaxy or galaxies that physics aren't different? Maybe that's how the force is able to be taken advantage of, physics are different and can be manipulated by thought? Hmmm.
So, here's my review of The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (combined with the review of Fellowship Of The Ring and The Two Towers)
The reviews in order are:
Crap, Crap Squared, Crap Cubed
Anything to me is believeable in Star Wars, because it is set in a technologically, spiritually, metaphysically, geographically distant time/setting. The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy however is suppose to set on what seems like Earth (albeit mixed with fantasy). (Can anyone confirm that Middle Earth is SUPPOSE to be our ficticious past?)
So, the thing that ruins the whole trilogy is the fact that the whole trilogy is unneccesary. Why couldn't Gandalf hop on a Nuclear radiated giant eagle - fly over the top of "Mount Incinerator" and drop the ring? Poof, end of story. The people of Rohan and Gondor would've been much happier!
Ain't It Cool News, a review and movie gossip website, rated this the "ending of a trilogy that surpasses Star Wars and raises a new bar" - I will have to say that the effects (especially nuclear radiated eliphants were spectacular) - but any movie with a decent budget is going to seem so realistic you feel like it's real nowadays.
The only good thing about this movie was that I got to see the "Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow" Preview. That movie looks amazing. Even in the preview, a giant robot steps on a senior citizen. I've always liked Conan O'Brien's joke about the #1 nightmare of adults 65 and older is robots killing them in their sleep.
Computergeeks.com is a really good source for small parts - really good prices too - they don't always stock the screws but generally they have them in stock

But the site is laid out like crap - it's hard to know what's what - they need thumbnails.
Started to pull away in quality??? I would say that Apple has always been ahead in quality (sure there have been quality issues - but most Apple buyers are assholes and attorneys)

One interesting thing was the integration - I have a cassette tape player from 1987 that has an electronic basketball game built into it.
Other interesting toys from the 80's that I'd be interested in seeing would be the XL video camera that used cassette tapes to record video onto.
Teddy Ruxpin (another casste based toy) is from the 80's as well.
If you notice on the parent site - a lot of things deal with cassette tape and radio - I would say 80's was defined by the cassette tape.
I would also challenge your theory of lots of good games. One of the best selling systems of all time : The Atari 2600 - had few if any GOOD or GREAT games - with the majority being rushed - most games from bandwagoners just copied code, made something flash on the screen and called it a game.

I noticed five different tables this morning at my local flea market with Paycheck, Kill Bill, and Matrix Revolutions.
At another local flea market (one of the largest in the country) there are as many as 50 tables that have pirated movies.
These sales should be stopped at a flea market management level or the OWNER of that market should be fined.
Some posts have mentioned Apple's hits & misses:
