It's even dumber to code as root. Then you don't know if what you're coding even works as a normal user. At that point it's no longer a laziness issue.
The article and a few of the posters are indicating that this will increase MS marketshare by allowing interoperability in UNIX environments... if I read them right. I don't understand how MS could greatly benefit from greater interoperability. Windows is usually picked for 2 reasons... 1. It's easy to use and everyone knows how and 2. saturation; you crap won't work with anything but Windows.
It seems that increased interoperability would steal far more people who have been avoiding the switch to *x because of interop issues than the UNIX people that can't figure out how to play well with Windows. Seriously... how many times have you heard "Damnit, we'd sure be switching to Windows if it weren't for all of these UNIX boxen we already have."
Hurray! Once again, let's make this country safer by scaring the piss outta everyone in it! First they brought us convenient color codes to tell us just how much we should be crapping in our pants on any given day but now we can even pick our friends based on their red orange or blue status! Don't worry, the government treats everyone equally.
And what will the mantra be this time? "Be suspicious of the red-banded cohorts... but don't change your plans." Just like the "Terrorism Alert Level"; be nice and scared enough to fall into line but please, not so much that you question the ability, necessity, or morality of "the man." After all, questioning the government is unpatriotic.
Oh crap... with that diatribe I just 'elevated' my status to orange. Mod me down damnit.
The way I see it is I write 'good' software for 2 reasons. 1. To exercise and expand my own ability making me a better programmer and 2. To display my skill thus proving my worth increasing my chances of getting a raise and/or making me more marketable for better positions.
A CEO on the other hand has neither of these incentives. There really is no 'ability' to making important corporate decisions; they're pretty much standing on the shoulders of those below them who actually know what they're talking about and they hold the highest position possible so there is no advancement to work toward.
Their only goal is the aquisition of wealth which, it's been proven, doesn't require success. Wealth is just thrown at them regardless.
Well, XMLTV is open source and there are other free/GPL TV-listing libraries available. Many even grab listings from web-based guides like tv-guide.com or titantv.com...
So, I guess if XMLTV somehow went under or started charging and all development stops so noone picked up the GPL code and the other free libraries which would work in its place all go tits-up which would pretty much require every website that carries tv listings to go down, they yeah... those bastards could really screw us over. So yes, death of open source + massive internet rollback could spell the end of MythTV listings. Forgive me if I keep my foil hat in the closet.
Or, more likely, your TiVo breaks and that nice $199 (or is it $250, no no... it's $299 now) non-transferable lifetime membership becomes useless and you shell out again. Not to mention upgrades...
As for misspellings and such in the guide... I've never noticed any. Even if SouthPrak was spelled wrong I highly doubt it would convince me to shell out to a pay service. In fact, my ReplayTV system has had more difficulty with their dial up crap and downtime than XMLTV has ever had.
My MythTV box has taken the place of my ReplayTV which is being shipped off to the gf.
It's also kind of cool to 'apt-get upgrade' and automagically there's all of these new options in MythTV. Over the past few months MythNews magically popped in there as well as MythBrowser. Most excellent.
It only took the US a few years to inflate Silicone Valley salaries to millions... and only a few more years to inflate Silicone Valley unemployment equally. There is still hope for American techies.
The difference principally arises from so-called license compatibility, but in large measure the differences are principally philosophical and not substantial.
...just then RMS' head exploded into a million pieces.
The company I work for is currently setting up their first couple of linux servers. They intend to move much of the server room to Linux but aren't really budging so much on the desktop. The PHBs just kinda point and laugh whenever anyone mentions SCO so the only 'chilling' effect SCO had is the feeling I get in my spine knowing I'll still have to develop for those damn Windows Terminal Servers while perfectly good Linux boxen are sitting right there!
to remove the word 'marriage' from the legal realm altogether. The word marriage has implications in almost every religion on the planet and those implications vary greatly from religion to religion and person to person. Let marriage be what it is to the people taking part in it without dictating what it is to them.
That means were free to create this 'thing' between 2 people whether they are straight, gay, religious, athiest, whatever. Our 'social binding' can have all of the economic benefits of today's marriage without the baggage. It will be well-defined and unabiguous and thus ends the debate.
But what do I know? I'm just an opinionated slash-bot.
My fiance is a graduate student in Mathematics. They won't accept anything but TeX for her thesis. I do believe the PME journal also required her to TeX-set the document as well. Word was never even an option.
So I'm a moron for not liking TiVo because, by default, it records things I don't want it to record and tells other people what I'm watching?
Better idea, buy a ReplayTV... you get all of the benfits of TiVo and none of that crap. Even better idea, setup a MythTV box. More features than either, none of the crap, and open development.
BTW, how brave of you AC.
I guess to me it's like Windows Update... it's easy enough to turn off, but I still hate it like the devil! Besides, TiVo IS collecting your viewing habits and that's probably going to get bigger before it gets smaller.
I'm right there with you. Only my backend is a little less powerful. XP1400+ with a single Bt8x8 card. However, it's always running KDE as well as a bunch of background services and I haven't seen a stutter in the recording or playing. My default recording is MPEG 4 around 1500.
I have frontends on my main Linux box, my XBox, and my laptop but no wireless unforunately:(
Well, the PC that's running my mythtv backend is also my webserver, MySQL server, file server, and CVS server. It's also used for StepMania when the geeks want to let it all hang out.
I bought a Panasonic ShowStopper about 3 years ago. It's starting to go bad (freezing both in video and the occassional lock up that is only fixed by pulling the power). I replaced the hard drive in hopes that would be the key but it looks like it's not so simple. Anyway, the service was free but had I paid $250 + price of hardware for lifetime, I'd be a little pissed now.

Not to mention a big-ass blood red screen when you log in as root as well as multiple warnings. It's painful logging in as root in Mandrake.
However, why would you log in as root in any distro once a user is set up? su is a bit quicker than logging in and out.
Another small quiet MythTV frontend!

I spat and slobbered all over myself from reading this! Mods don't know funny methinks.

Like... I know. It's like, not white and there's not even any chrome and stuff. That's like, so 1999. Come on...
Sit troll, sit. Good troll.
Maybe that's the problem...

I concur. Using the previous drivers I am running my Myth box with only a TV. Overscan settings do not appear to affect the display,

I completely deleted an episode of Average Joe and quality actually increased!

So, very close to 0.

'apt-get install mythtv-suite' here... Damn, you got me by 2 characters. I guess the dependencies can be more difficult as the parent suggested :)
