If Microsoft or Sony can't figure out how to make their boxes unmoddable...

It should be obvious by now that they don't want their boxes to be 100% unmoddable. Whether they admit it or not modding sells a lot of consoles. My XBox is pretty much my main media center with 6 or 8 divx movies and a ton of mp3s on it. Do you think I would've bought the thing just to play Halo? They're trying to strike a balance so that modding is too difficult or risky for Joe Consumer to attempt but possible for Joe Hardcore.

Now, PS2's modchip sales and installers are everywhere and it's simple to find a local installer to pop a chip in. They're trying to tighten the reins a little. XBox is trying to gain ground and pick up as many hoseholds as possible so their protections are a bit lax.

BTW, I now own 7 *legitimate* games for my 'media center.' That's 7 that wouldn't have been purchased if the console was not moddable and more than many non-mod people that have had their consoles for similar amounts of time.

  17. Re:mmm on The Most Compatible DVD Format: DVD-R · · Score: 1

I think you have it backwards there...

They did this by making a drive (and patenting it and licensing it) that is capable of burning both formats, but crippling the DVD-R capability to half speed of the DVD+R on the same drive (4x +, 2x -, or 8x+/4x-).

The DVD-R specification called for 1x/2x burning. If there was such as thing as a 4x DVD-R standard back then, then they would've used it. The drive used to be limited to 1x only DVD-RW recording and they fixed it with a firmware update shortly after 2x spec was released. In fact, just checking Sony's site, there's a firmware update enabling 4x DVD-R recording on the drive. The DRU-500 was just about the best drive for both formats back in the day and when it starts to fall behind, they upgrade it through firmware.

The thing is, at the time DVD-R was limited to 1x/2x. DVD+R was 2.4x/4x. They released the drive according to spec. Their drive burnt DVD-R just as well as any other.

And as for DVD+R dying a slow death, that would be sad because DVD+RW is FAR superior to -RW. Even if player support for +R/RW died, +RW should still stick around for data.

  18. The sad thing is... on California Microsoft Settlement · · Score: 2, Interesting

Windows 95 has fallen out of support and besides that, most people have gotten a new PC since then with ME or XP handcuffed to it. 98 is falling (has fallen?) out of support and even that has been largely replaced by newer versions (like it or not). How many people still hang on to their old licenses after the software is trash? There's gonna be like 10 claims from geeks swiping the license from granny's computer.
