  1. Re:Not surprising. That's what Jobs does. on Behind a Steve Jobs Keynote · · Score: 3, Insightful

That's not a fair comparison- Steve really is involved with product design and really does contribute ideas that steer development. In the 80s he was instrumental in making the platform viable and immediately after returning to Apple in the late 90s he fixed all the problems Amelio introduced and started the company moving in the direction it's going today. He doesn't code or sculpt prototype cases or anything like that, but it's Steve's high-level decisions that make those things happen.

So, while he may be "famous for fame" right now, that fame really did come from something concrete- unlike Paris.

No, the innovation with the iPod was not only to greatly increase all the technical specs of the player (not just storage space but transfer speed- Firewire was so much better than USB at the time there was simply no comparison) but to give the player a really well-thought-out interface (the wheel) and marry it with the best media management program they could get (iTunes). iTunes, the iPod, and the ITMS were all designed simultaneously as part of a single Apple initiative and had always been intended to work together.

So which one is it?

  9. Re:Well good on Federal Judge Rules Against Intelligent Design · · Score: 1

Evolution doesn't require sex. A given computer's characteristics make it successful or unsuccessful in its environment. If it is successful its design is copied and modified to produce future generations of computers (the 8086). If it is unsuccessful it is not copied and becomes extinct in favor of its competitors (like core or bubble memory gave way to DRAM). It's even common to combine aspects of computer designs the way genes are combined with sex, like the way the Athlon was made from an Alpha foundation with IA-32 on top.

"Evolution" in the current debate is just a shorthand for "evolution of biological systems through sex and nucleic acids"; the central idea of reproduction of the fittest is not tied to any specific physical process.

  10. Sequel on Fantastic Voyage Into the Heart · · Score: 0, Redundant

  11. Re:...and here come the sceptics on Polar Bears Drowning As Globe Warms · · Score: 1

A major volcanic eruption would cause far more climate disruption than human activity ever has. Is it natural for this to cause extinctions? Should we try to prevent it, or let nature take its course? If the planet gets hit by a large asteroid it could very well be completely sterilized, and for all we know that's the end of all life anywhere in the universe. Should we try to prevent this, or let nature take its course?

It's arrogant to think that humans are harming or short-circuiting nature. We ARE nature; we just change the world with our tools and creations instead of our bodies like all other animals do.

Apple is making huge profits off the iPod (still dwarfed by their computer arm, though). The music store has been making small profits, but since they consider the store a feature of iTunes its performance as a business unit is less important.

  21. Two things on Are the 360 Launch Titles Actually Next-Gen? · · Score: 1
There are two things in the 360's favor:
    • Launch titles ALWAYS look like shit. It was true this generation, it was true before, and it'll probably be true of the Revolution and PS3 also. But they always get better as developers get a handle on the platform. If you judged the PS2 based on Armored Core 2 or Tekken Tag Tournament, would you have ever guessed it could handle something like God of War?
    • Xbox Live. This is a truly next-generation feature in that it's never been done before, period. Downloadable demos for a console? An enforced shareware/demoware market for small developers? Live streams of tournament games being played, to thousands of users at a time? This is completely new and no other console is even considering it yet.
