    First off, Mario never died.

That's not too hard to do, considering that Sonic the Hedgehog died along with Sega's plan to stop making consoles.

Last I heard, Sonic was a piece of software, not hardware. 10 bucks says that we'll see a Sonic vs. Mario or some deravation thereof for NGC.

Also, Sony has pretty much dropped the Crash Bandicoot franchise

Sony never had the Crash Bandicoot franshise. Its owned by Universal who is taking it to at least PS2 and x-box .

replacing it with yet more Tekken ... spinoffs

See above comment, replace Universal with Namco.

not to mention the many EA sports games

EA makes games for every system, DC, PS2, N64, PC, and I believe they've commited to X-box as well.

The movie plays with one of the central puzzles about World War II, an issue that has fascinated historians for years: why did the Russian people fight so hard and sacrifice so much

I would think that this just shows Machiavelli's Principle that it is better to be feared than loved. The Russians were taking huge losses, throughout the war. I do know that Stalin tried many things, including putting more units behind the front lines to "clean up" those that retreated. If you know your superior is going to shoot you if you stand still, why the hell not charge the damn guns? Not to mention the fact that Hitler stated his primary goal was to take Russia up to the Urals. Hell, in the territory the Nazis did take over, there were Enzitazgruppen(sp?) that came after and once again "cleaned up" what the army didn't take care of.

ok, I've finished that rant. I do think the Battle of Stalingrad is worthy of a movie, more so than a lot of other WWII movies depending on your perspective. It was the turning point in the eastern front, the Nazis never made any major advances after it(of course in 6 months one must learn how to effictively fight one's foe). What I find incredably intresting, are the reasons behind the battle. Hitler's propaganda machine was always looking for new blood, and noticed that Stalingrad was named after Stalin(duh). Therefore the Nazi's make a valiant effort to siege the city. Of course, Stalin says to himself, 'Hey! I named that place after me! They can't take it!' and the bloody bloodshed we see follows, says a lot about the nature of the two, don't you think?

Anyway, as long as this pricing doesn't move to games, I'm not too worried about it. There is a good explination of the technology over at Ars Technica

My main beef with this is: My parents bought a Pac Bell in Christmas of '99. While, I can't stand to use it, its fine for them. They don't need any more power than a K6-2 333 for the internet and checking e-mail. It came with Word 97 and that's the biggest piece of software they use. That being said, this computer came with virus protection. Which is all nice, fine, and good. Of course we all know that you've got to update your virus protection periodically. It logically follows that we had to pay to update this virus protection. In my mind, this is a perfect parallel with installing Office XP on a monthly subscription. If I can't convince my mother that we need to update our virus protection every month, how is Micro$oft going to convince her to PAY(I bought this computer it should work!) again just to use Word the 3 times a month she uses it.

This will be bad, because the vast majority of people that buy OEM will not upgrade their hardware every 2 years. This is why I wish those damn Internet Appliances would take off. My Parents don't need a full computer for what they do. and I know they don't need to be paying every month or year for software they don't always use.

I know Apple migrated everyone from 68K to PPC, but then again it was just in OS 8.5(we're on 9.1 now) that they cut off 68K users from OS upgrades. PPC came out in 1991, So even if Apple made itself a nice 1.2 Ghz T-bird, with DDR and GeForce 2 Ultras standard, they won't run the vast majority of Mac apps like PPC will; ALL apps will have to be completely rewritten to take full advantage of the new processor, and those that aren't will be slow as hell; AMD and Intel are begining the migration to 64-bit chips. And the last switch took almost 10 years to complete, and you can still find apps that run 68K natively.
Its not in Apple's best intrest to switch. They've been optmizing OSX for Altivec anyway, and with the 3 or 4 1.2 Ghz G4s that Motorola is hiding from Public eyes, I don't see any reason to switch.(that and I bought my G3 with the intent of keeping it for at least 6 years)

people said that the console industry couldn't support 3 players when Sony decided to get into the game(of course nintendo brought them into it but :P). and since you say that Sega is still in it then I feel that each of the new consoles have their own advantages. The Dreamcast has been out for a year already, that gives it a bigger playerbase than the other next-gen consoles, which isn't to be overlooked. The Playstation 2 has Sony behind it, which can't be overlooked. The Gamecube has Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Metriod, and Donkey Kong. Other than Sonic, those are Video Games. Hell I still just tell my parents I'm playing Mario just so they understand what I'm doing. Gamers will flock to those games that they know have always been good (which brings about another point about games in general, but I won't go any farther into that in this post), And Finally, the X-box has both Micro$oft behind it and Direct-X (of course technically the Dreamcast does too but I digress again) That makes it much easier for games to be ported. Of course, in my experience, the best games for either PC or console, are those that are exclusive to it (online Q2 w/Mouse & keyboard vs. mario on my NES Advantage). I think Micro$oft will force their way in, just like Sony did. and remember Competition is a good thing
