This is the exact concern I've had since the start of these highly publicized intrusions. Instead of blaming lax security guidelines and policy at the places of intrusion, the public media is placing the blame in the hands of the people bringing making this knowledge public. Surly there are better ways to notify the companies at fault, but with the new development of "let's only solve problems when the public makes a giant scene out of it" (ex. people complaining on Twitter about issues they are having) this was bound to happen sooner rather than later.
I really hope the people in power see the true issue and don't use it as an excuse to lock down and regulate even further (ha, yeah right). Prevention is the key measure, not treatment of the problem once it happens.
I fully support watching the tutorial and reading strategy guides online (the ones from DOTA might apply as well , however as it stands the "match making" system still requires tweaking and can cause much angst. I'd recommend playing the low level public games if you don't know what you're doing and wait until they fix the quirks in match making, as it stands public games work perfectly but MM games have issues with leavers.
I recently bought and a 15" Macbook Pro. I then sold it 3 months later because because I didn't enjoy OSX and it seemed like there were many things done by Apple to prevent Windows from being a proper alternative on the otherwise nice piece of hardware:
- iSight is limited to 160x120 pixels. Yes, the size of a postage stamp. This can't be changed anywhere.
- Cannot switch between the two video cards available in the system (nvidia 9400M and 9600M GT), so you're stuck with the higher end graphics and loose another hour of battery life
- Cannot turn keyboard backlight off, only to lowest brightness setting, unlike in OSX. That's more battery life gone.
- Bootcamp application/drivers consumes 2-4% of processor when idle. What the hell. It's necessary to keep it running if you want to utilize the function keys on the keyboard amongst other things.
- Optical output couldn't upmix stereo input to 5.1 surround no matter what drivers were used. This was also a "feature" when in OSX. I couldn't stand having
Eh sorry, that small number is from IOMeter.. CrystalMark reports 1504MB/s for sequential reading. 75MB/s for 4k random writes ain't too shabby either:)
Ha, there's a tiny slashdot window on page 22. I recognize all the other windows except for "October" in the top right frame. Anyone have an idea of what that is?
I never thought there would be a day where I'd say "damn those guys at Comcast have it lucky". We have 10mbit from Rogers and just got a letter that they will implementing a monthly cap of only 98GB/m and $1/GB after that. Calculating the maximum speed one can go before hitting that limit... is only 302kbit/s, non-stop (up and down), in comparison to Comcast's 771kbit/s. Bah.
You will be happy to hear that it is, infact, Diablo 3.
Sorry to disappoint any Starcraft fans out there,
there's always Ghost to look forward to, right?;)
If you're using Active Directory you can already disable logging in, in a way. You can set up which hours you can login and supply peoeple with lab specific accounts.
How come no one else here is reminded by the system made by the Gordon Way in the book by Douglas Adams, "Dirk Gently's holistic Detective Agency"?
There was an application he helped create called Anthem which turned financial results and various other pieces of company data into jingles and music.
Congratulations for scaring a CIO, now, tell me kind sir... what sort of stable shared calendering application would you use in such an environment? Preferably compatible with those people who decide to bring laptops in to work running Windows?... Proposing Exchange to the board is a very scary idea as well. *gulp*
How fast were our original CD drives? Remember when they came in "containers" ala Floppy/DAT? Give it enough time and money and we will see "HP HSS52x with 3D LIGHTSCRIBE Technology!" on the market sooner or later:)

Maybe they could bump Rahul Sood up during this mess, the envy line of products is pretty awesome.

Scratch that, I logged in under Dick Cheney. His password hint was "but I swear it was in self-defense"
Huh, seems I've lost my Intellipedia credentials, anyone feel like sharing their account?

Just saw a 4x SSD Raid-0 setup pull 350MB/s, so I'd say this is a good direction :-)
Check out the release notes, and the source code for the page for more comedy. I wish other sites had hidden back-talk between the developers :)

I believe this what chefs define as "getting served" ;-)
No one talks about ARM either, but they have chips in just about everything these days. Just you wait, and the iceberg will come into view. Shhh.
This is actually very good free press for them, hope he recovers quick. Media loves accidents.
discovered their suspicions were right all along. OS X was running under emacs!

You know it's personal when they submit an email address in the content of a slashdot article ;)

I found that pressing Ctrl+Z after Ctrl+T brings up the URL from the last tab you were on. Now you just need to press Enter.

So THAT'S how Pop music is created in the future!

Do you have stairs in your house? Inquiring minds would like to know.
I laughed... but specing out machines just to find out that licensing will cost 1/3rd of hardware is a bit much. It's like a horrible, horrible tax.
