And, low and behold, every time somebody starts something like this, they make it suck more than pirating movies.
I think you'll find that has more to do with Hollywood than incompetent video services. It's a capitalist market - if the service isn't there, there's an opportunity for you to start one and cash in. But, you'll probably find you have the same problems with licencing as the rest of them.
they are, to put it plainly, the biggest corporation selling a commercial Linux distro.
Could you explain this phrasing for me? They could, I suppose, 'sell' the distro, but any buyer could release the sourcecode for free. How is it that they are 'selling' their distro?

All right, all you Doubting Thomases. I double dog dare you to complain about the US court system now. I told you if you would just be patient, I had confidence in the system's ability to sort this out in the end.
Uhm, the reason they lost is because they picked a fight with players who had billions of dollars, and a very well-established team of expensive lawyers, ready to fight.
They were Germany picking a fight with Russia.
Most people who get sued unfairly don't have that luxury.
It seems like a lot of the problems with wireless spectrum are caused by legacy issues.
Suppose you were able to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch. Would it not be possible to get a significant extra amount of use out of the spectrum if it were designed as one big network, 100% digital?
What would you use instead? Trying to install and administer a ton of services from a shell alone (FTP, HTTP, SSH, POP3, MTA, etc.) might be OK for some who've been hacking with Unix since they were 5, but I find it a nightmare personally.
Yeah, could you please somehow persuade the people at cPanel to get it installed by default on a new server? It's an absolute bitch to use with cPanel unfortunately, because their software is tailor-made to work with one of 2 version of mySQL.:-S
We (for example) use the ACE framework [wustl.edu] with no problems, but the managers and the legal department around here are terrified that if GNU code entered our codebase someone would scream "show us the sourcecode!" for everything.
And your legal dept. have a problem with that, why? Because you're relying on closed-source to make money instead of providing ongoing services for clients that they couldn't get otherwise get with just the sourcecode? Maybe you need a new businessmodel.
Also, Linux does quite well on the i8n front. Installing Mandriva, there was more languages then I could even name.
Does it include i8n 5p33k?
Seriously, why are otherwise-sensible programmers too lazy to type localization? I've never gotten it. Is it something to do with an old 8 character filename restriction?
They'll just do to it what they've done to so many other exciting human developments; they'll teach the kids that it's boring and uninteresting, and too hard for anyone but a "nerd" to understand.
Finally! No more Myspace! It'll be just like the good old days! Let's get that Internet into schools ASAP.

Yeah, you really should do; you clearly need a more secure OS than the one you're running now. I just hacked your firewall, and man have you got a lot of weird stuff on there.:-) You're lucky I'm not a black-hat.
Making a habit of ignoring juries has far wider implications than just patent trolls.
How about just ignoring juries' damages awards? Really, I don't know why the US uses this system. It's one thing for a jury to look at a serious criminal case with a good amount of evidence and decide Guilty or Not Guilty (actually that should be Not Proven, but that's another matter), but for them to decide on damages seems ridiculous. They invariably seem to pick ridiculously high figures. Why not leave that to a judge? At least they have a chance of having some reason.
Wake up people! IIS Lately is just as secure as Apache, Development with.NET is easier and faster then PHP...
I've got a question for you, and everyone, really.
Do you want operating systems and development software to be forever dominated by a single corporation that charges you what they want for each, even if their stuff is a bit better? I mean, fundamentally, that's what pisses me off. Are we really going to still have a vast number of electronic devices running, and having stuff developed for, Microsoft Corporation software, in 100 years' time? With MS's stubborn maintenance of position in the computing indistry, it's starting to seem that way. I find it fucking annoying.

Here's one it started doing since the recent MS security drive. Any file that could possibly exploit a hole in any piece of software seems to be treated with serious suspicion. Somehow, this seems to include GIF files. So, when someone tried to send me a GIF file, I get this warning. I download it anyway, and it's sitting on my hard drive. I can copy it somewhere else, open it, etc.
However - and this is the kicker - when I click on the blue link to the file in the MSN chat window, I get this dialog. Yeah, it actually DELETED the file I just downloaded. After I copied it using Explorer. And I have full access to it. Dunno who implemented that piece of genius.

The upside is, if they or their children practice what they preach, the problem won't be around anymore in a couple of generations.

I can say, without hyperbole, that that is the most ridiculous overuse of sarcasm I've ever seen in my life.

New "switch to Linux" line: "Ooh, spinning cube!"
Old "upgrade Windows" line: Best, most reliable Windows yet.
New "upgrade Windows" line: Translucent windows!!!
Unfortunately it isn't possible for the distros to have this installed by default because the US patent and copyright system is completely broken.
Couldn't they install it by default for non-US regional releases?
*shrug* They shoe-horned the banning of marijuana into it.
Congratulations on being the first Slashdotter EVER to use that quote in an insightful, and not a funny, way.
