Disagree - In the grand scheme of Internet audio suppliers, Lala is a small player. If that was their motivation, they would be throwing wads of cash at Spotify (maybe they are! who knows).
Also, no one i know migrates FROM lala TO iTunes. They're completely different. Lala is music in the cloud, whereever you want it. iTunes..is..not.
I think they bought it for the truly innovative licensing deals they've struck. 1) FULL FREE PREVIEWS OF SONGS? Duh. Everyone should have this. Apple NEEDS this.
2) Web songs. Cheap as hell, but only accessible through your browser. How often am I in front of a browser? All the damn time. How much MORE music have I bought because of this? Tons. I've discovered more good music through lala and felt financially free to pay money for it because of this model.
3) Don't forget social media. This is a well-done social music experience, followers, a feed of songs from followers, true aggregation of curated content? Check.
Please, please Apple..keep the core functionality of Lala alive somehow - increase their library to iTunes' size, and you have a WINNAR.
One client of mine had about 15 sites hosted on NetSol, every one was hacked.
The bot is: 1) Checking for any "index." file (index_ files were unaffected) with any extention 2) Searching for a tag 3) Inserting a pile of obfuscated javascript after the tag.
If you have any clients on netsol, DO check them, NOW.
Search places like craigslist "gigs" for short term projects!
People post "simple" short-term projects all the time, where as an entry level candidate, you can stand out by offering a competitive rate (think 40$ / hourish...rate too low = people won't take you seriously). Be a good communicator on how you'd solve their problem, and you'll likely land a few of those gigs.
Remember to search in big markets like NYC or the Bay Area, and tailor your resume to highlight the skills you have that apply to the job!
After three or four projects like this, you'll have company names you've "consulted" for on the resume, and bigger outfits will start taking you more seriously.
I truly believe that companies like self-starters on the whole, Showing "deliverables" and industry knowledge for ANY client is far more important that an uninterrupted full time job crawl.
how pleasant someone's singing voice is, is a completely subjective thing that can only really be properly judged by other human beings.
They said nothing about the pleasantness of the singing voice. The system judges the quality of the vibrato.
While I believe the above was referring to "quality" in a scientific sense rather than how "good" or "bad" it was, the whole hypothesis of one's "vibrato" having all that much to do with whether one is a good singer or not is hogwash. There are many uses of vibrato from virtually none (listen to a good singer perform Handel) to a ton (listen to a different good singer perform Wagner), where the amount of vibrato in a given style changes over the course of a phrase...etc.
In the end, all this algorithm can probably do is determine how well a singer can constrain their voice into a certain vibrating range, having much more to do with muscular control than technique.
Ya know, "938979 Vista Performance and Reliability Pack". This certainly improved "perceived" performance issues for me as far as ridiculous copy/move operations, etc. And according to this: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=95709 it claims to fix more than just the copy/move thing.
In fact, it looks much more like Global Frequency... a pretty great comic where there are 1,000 experts in this or that scattered around the world, who are brought together for specific missions. No memory wipe though. Global Frequency WAS turned into a pilot, but not picked up. Good potential there, probably bad execution? Or just short-sighted execs, as usual!
Case in point: Farscape. It's cancelled now, but I'd be _happy_ if somehow Tivo is letting nielsen or some network know that I watch that show religiously.
Same goes for Buffy, Angel, Gilmore Girls, etc.. Shows that are GREAT whose ratings don't reflect their quality.
But, this is the only good thing I can see come of Tivo's tracking my viewing habits.
This is absolutely the most infuriating OS X problem i've run into yet... Perhaps even moreso than having to reboot when you forget to trash a network drive after you've left the office. Why? Because it's _unpredictable_. I.E. right now, everything's fine. But will it be 15 minutes from now??
Lord knows.
I can't IMAGINE how Apple could leave this unfixed. Makes no sense.
As far as TWAIN support is concerned, Go pick up a program called VueScan. It works flawlessly with my Epson Perfection 1680 at work, under Firewire even!
No need to wait for Epson's official implementation.
The only problem of course is that it isn't integrated into Photoshop, but I think it's a small price to pay.
Cheers
Ya'll are forgetting some of the other free services Apple's been offering that will no longer be free..and they're so cool I think I might just pay.
What am I talking about? APPLICATION INTEGRATION.
Here's one simple example...
1. The fact that in iPhoto, I can select a bunch of picures and hit "Homepage" and in 3 minutes have a great looking, thumbnailed picture page. Unbelievably easy, and so much less of a hassle than doing it by hand.
For anyone who hasn't seen this in action...
Check this out
It's stuff like that that WOWS the windoze people I show it to, and I think it (at least that particular example) might be worth some of my hard earned money. And anyway, I tend to take better advantage of things I pay for.
Yeah, I forgot about that. There are a couple IRC channels where you can download DivX versions of all the episodes...I got myself caught up doing that. If you're patient there are some VERY high bandwidth people on that channel, I was getting 2-3 episodes a night.
You have a few options. There are a few decent primers out there for newbies like yourself.
Here's One.
Go, read, enjoy.
If you have a bit of cash sitting around, almost all of the first season has been released on DVD in the States, but they're a bit of a rip off.
My personal recommendation is Blackstar.co.uk
Kult T.V., the U.K. distributor has done a FANTASTIC job of putting out the episodes, and they're FAST, the first boxed set of Season THREE is already out, where in the U.S. they haven't even started season TWO yet. Grrrrr. Very frustrating.
So.. If you have a DVD player capable enough, go to the other side of the pond. Much better value, and hey, even much prettier packaging.
So, for those of you who haven't been religiously following the Farscape universe, here's a quick run down of where everything's left off.
The last episode was called "Fractures", and features a bittersweet reunion of the crew, who had been traveling separately for about 10 episodes, one group on Moya (the big ship you see in all the commercials), and the second on Talyn (Moya's son, a mutant ship with really big guns).
Why Bittersweet, do you ask?
Weeeell, it's not a _complete_ reunion, two of the members of Talyn's group don't make it back to Moya. First, Stark. For those who don't know, he's a recurring character who's basically a rather deranged humanitarian, and Zhaan's (the Blue girl...as opposed to the monochromatic girl) soulmate. The second character not to make it back is John Crichton. Wait! John? Isn't he a main character? They can't kill a main character! Whooa.. settle down there sparky. John was cloned in an earlier episode. Cruel plot device? Ratings ploy? Whatever. It worked, and created some interesting circumstances. Essentially, the John on Talyn who dies gets it all figured out. Unlocks the wormhole technology in his head (with some help), forces Harvey out of his subconcious, and even gets the girl (Aeryn). In the meantime the John on Moya is just as screwed up (He has a near-death experience in the LOONEY TOONS world, for Chrissakes).
So. The reunion. The John that Aeryn fell in love with is dead. Stark is MIA, and everyone is just plain unhappy. Aeryn's a mess, the John that's still alive is confused as hell.
To wrap up, John(1) left a message for John(2), explaining everything that happened with the wormholes, and the knowledge locked in his brain, etc.. and told him how close Scorpius is to figuring out how to control wormholes himself. So John(2) does what any good down-home hero would do and decides that he needs to stop Scorpius at all costs, and will go to his ship to do it.
Apple doesn't have a hope in the world of getting toeholds in business markets, and even mobile professionals to some point, until there's a functional OSX equivalent to Outlook. Exchange servers are the lifeblood of a great many organizations. And hey, it does a pretty darn good job. Arranging meetings via shared calendars is priceless. IMHO.
So, in short, Apple needs to bide its time until an Exchange aware PIM is available..via an Entourage upgrade, separate app, whatever!
True, but how much fun would it be to watch 1.5 hours of your/my dull life on the big screen. No offense mind you, but hey, it makes US feel better to watch people with more problems than we can ever aspire to have.
It's wonderful of course that LOTR has so many nods, but it was expected.. What I wasn't expecting is how many nominations Moulin Rouge received. I personally find that fantastic. It's definitely a love/hate movie, but dude, few movies achieve its level of artistry.
Though, I think A Beautiful Mind should have gotten an effects nomination, since it takes damn near wizardry to make *math* look cool.
That I need to talk with the people on AIM regardless of the client I use.
So what's going to happen if AOL successfully blocks Trillian from their network? I switch--with great annoyance--back to AIM. I _need_ this service for my day to day work (and asking everyone to switch to ICQ isn't exactly an option), and I will have to use whatever client works.
I think AOL knows this, they may be monopolistic megalomaniacs, but they ain't dumb.
When you come to rely on a service, you end up being at the beck and call of the provider of the service. Unfortunately.
Well, I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet, give 'em a run for their money Trillian...I love a David & Goliath story.:)
Apparently the poster hasn't really been watching all that sci-fi has to offer of late. Farscape has been and continues to be-
1. Very continuity driven, yet accessible through genuine humor. Enterprise has apparently been passing all of the inhabited planets with jokes on them. Farscape succeeds by making the continuity-heavy bits multi-parters (there've been 2, if memory serves, THREE PART episodes), and the less continuity-heavy parts character driven...so even if you're not quite sure what's going on, the interactions between crew members (whether they're pissed off with each other or having mad sex) makes up for it.
Ah yes, Stargate SG-1 gets continuity points as well. Great show. Nearly every episode feels like a movie in itself (okay, that's just because they're no commercials built in, and it has super high production values, but i'm not complaining!)
2. Full of well-acted changing characters. Emphasis on the _changing_. The only other show I can cite where characters change so dramatically and _believably_ is B5. It's such a joy to watch characters you love go through hell and back and come out the other end with scars that they keep with them for episodes and episodes.
3. Unafraid to push boundaries. Farscape, near the end of the 3rd season it is in currently, ran an episode that was almost entirely a cartoon--a looney toon, in fact. It was funny, and touching, even.
4. And on the subject of being touching. Call me what you like, but Farscape makes me cry. Pretty often. So there. B5 did it, but Andromeda? Too bad what potential _was_ there has just gone the way of the dodo. And voyager? Man would I have jumped for joy if Janeway had bitten it...
So that's all. I _hope_ the poster takes the time to look into Farscape...I like to think of myself as a pretty smart guy, and that I've seen enough crappy sci-fi to know that Farscape is pretty darn smart.

I followed their instructions to the letter, and found that my settings were ALREADY how the document described. So no luck.
Has anyone actually had this problem _go away_?
Especially after following Adobe's instructions?

Too bad there isn't a survey or something on their site, thousands of geeks in one day would sure confuse their marketing department.
