  1. And if you go to redhat.com... on Fedora Core 2 test1 Released · · Score: 1

you'll notice that they're offering a "FREE HAT" with the purchase of Red Hat Professional Workstation. Kinda reminds me of a South Park episode.

  2. Just wait it out on Experiences with DirecWay Satellite Internet · · Score: 1

I also live outside Ann Arbor (Saline, actually), and until about a month ago, i had direcpc satillite internet. In my 2 year experience with satillite internet, I can say that it isn't worth the cost. It's slow (200 kbit/s at best), the latancy is high (ssh is nearly impossible (type a command, wait 5-10 seconds)), and it's damn expensive, more expensive than cable. The router that you mentioned is a few hundred dollars if I'm not mistaken, the dish is $300, and the service is $60 per month. It's just not worth it. Web browsing IS faster, but the support for linux and certain protocals (rsync comes to mind) is very flaky. I would recommend just waiting until Comcast rewires your area. They're currently rewireing a lot of the areas around Ann Arbor, I've seen the crews out and about. My neighborhood was hooked up about a month ago. It's just a matter of time before you'll be surfing in style on a 3 mbit/s cable connection, so have patience.

  5. Re:Apt on Linux in 2004? · · Score: 1

Hey, at least Red Hat has a built in packaging system now. I ran Red Hat 7 back when it was the shit to have, but I was always frustrated that there was no integrated packaging system. I changed over to gentoo about 2 years ago, and I have always had trouble getting my Wind0ze buddys to make the switch to linux, because I like to show them my setup, and they tend to like it, especially because of the portage packaging sytem. When I give them Red Hat CD's, and they install it on their system at home, however, I get basic questions like "So, how exactly do i update/install software." The problem is, gentoo and debian are too hard for most users to run/maintain, but Red Hat kinda sucks.

With Fedora, however, the packaging system is coherent and comprehensive (That "Red Hat Network" system just didn't cut it before). A transition to apt is definatly a step in the right direction for the Red Hat desktop. Fedora is brand new though, so of course it still has it's quirks. With a little bit of time, I think that Fedora can become a solid desktop distribution.

  8. Re:why not support the companies that support us? on Half-Life 2 - A Linux User's Lament · · Score: 5, Insightful

I agree whole-heartedly. This is 2003, and the biggest game of the year locks you down to a propriotary platform. This is an inexcusable insult on Valve's behalf.

ID and Activition are both releasing competitors to Half-Life 2 (Doom 3 and Unreal Tournament 2004) that will run on linux, and I would strongly recomend either of them over HL2 soley based on principal. If you just buy the damn game like they want you to, and never demand alternative OS support, they're never going to care.

It's too bad, really, because hl2 looks like a spectacular game.

  9. not why, but how? on MSN Planning to Take on Google? · · Score: 1

I understand why msn would want to be the number one search engine but, not to start a flame war or anything, I just don't see what msn could possibly offer that google doesn't already oiffer, execpt possibly passport.

The whole point of google is that it is incredibly simple and it gets great results from queries. The incredibly simple part is something I don't imagine msn's competitor will have on the account of.. well just look at it, and again.

So, why would one choose msn over google unless it offers some sort of advantage (intigration with the next distribution of windows possiblly)?

  11. The possibilities... on Downloading The Mind · · Score: 1, Funny

This is absolutely incredible! If you could make an image of your brain, there would eventually be peer-to-peer swapping of brain images (mybrain.iso). Plus you could enviably mount your brain's image and add stuff, so you wouldn't have to go to school or go to seminars or workshops; you could just download them and sync the image with your brain. Also, we could create a super-brain, combining all the best elements of the brain, and transfer them to robots to do our bidding, or use them as our processors (imagine Pentium 99999999999999), we would never have to work or do anything, we could create a whole society of super-intelligent beings that far surpass our own abilities in every way. The only draw back is when they create a world to imprison us in to use our bodies for electric energy and call it the matrix :) . We would need regulations and rules to obide by in creating these super beings. So, anyway, yeah, it would be pretty cool to be able to image your brain, back it up (for when you get Alzheimer's Disease), add to it effortlessly, swap your brain for Albert Einstien's brain, and an infinite number of other possibilities, but no matter what, we're going to need to have some regulations on what you can and can't do because otherwise, it'll end up just like the whole cloning situation. Oh, and kudos to CBC for supporting OGG :) .
