  1. Real results on Best Buy Says Customers Not Always Right · · Score: -1

I work at the Tech Bench at the ol' yellow tag (part time). I hear a lot of stuff saying "Well INSERT STORE HERE screwed me over" or "I'm never shopping at INSERT STORE HERE again!" There's also the "I've never had any problems at INSERT STORE HERE" and "I love the service at INSERT STORE HERE and they got me a new item for nothing!" or some such. I think what a lot of people are missing is that it's all about who you talk to. Talk to any decently sized retailer, and you'll have good people, bad people, great people, and evil people.

Since working retail for a bit, I can honestly say that I've gotten a lot calmer with other retail workers. Why should I get angry when they might lose their job because they don't pitch me the service plan (due to a greedy/evil manager)? They probably hate working there as much as the customer hates listening to the pitch.

Also, if you want results (at least at the Tech Bench), the best way to go about it is to be calm, present your case. Don't go buck wild, don't expect anything because you're the customer (well at least in the store I work at). If you have a legitimate problem, generally the Techs (again, I can't speak for other stores/people, so this only applies to the store I work at) will bend over backwards to assist you. If you aren't going crazy, and are honest, chances are good that you'll get an exchange or service. If you are being an asshat, chances are good that the techs will deny whatever just to spite you.

I went off on a tangent a bit there, but I want to re-iterate before I end this that if you've had a good or bad experience, it's all about who you've talked to, not what store you shopped at.

PS: At Best Buy, there are things marked for "DEVO" and for "Service." If you purchase a "Service" item and get the extended warranty, your unit will be sent out to a service center (for possibly a few weeks) when/if it breaks. If you purchase a "DEVO" item and get the extended warranty, you will get an exchange done right then and there. Sometimes items marked "DEVO" will be changed to "Service" and vice-versa. Asking an associate whether the thing you're about to buy is "DEVO" or "Service" is a good idea (they can check using the computer).

  2. Re:appeal? on Court Blocks FCC Media Ownership Rules · · Score: -1
This is the best news I've heard all day. All week? All month? WOOHOO! Anyways, to answer your question:
This is great an all, but is it possible for a higher court to reverse this ruling? I'm assuming the current broadcast oligopoly will not take this sitting down.
Yes it is possible. However one has to look at who will be appealing. It would be the "Bush Administration" or the FCC (according to the article). Now with this being election year, and this issue causing a huge public backlash politically, I'm not sure if they will appeal (at least not before November). One could take a close look at this issue to see how the good ol' George feel confident in winning the election. If they don't appeal before Election Day, there's a very good chance the Bush is waiting so as to not abandon voters. If they do appeal before Election Day, its either:

    a) they don't care about the voters because they will:
    1) stay in office anyway
    OR
    2) the media guys paid them so much that they don't care (in this case I would think (1))

    OR

    b) they are so confident in winning that it doesn't matter what they do.

I personally think (and hope) that they will not appeal.
Sorry in advance for the bad formatting.
  3. Several people already know about this on Cell Phone Ringtones Give Music Industry Another Headache · · Score: 0, Informative

As someone who cut and made ringtones for my own phone, I can say that several people already knew about this. What the program does, from the looks of their feature set is to make this available to the John Everyman, and make it easy to use. Sites like CraigGiven (read the FAQ) and the such have had information on how to do this for a bit now (Thats where I learned it from. My own phone site is at www.9xrnet.com/9x/sprintpcs with some old school game songs). But there are places like MyPhoneFiles that already have popular tunes available for download at no charge. I guess the program is really for the avg layman who wants to have some indie song or something that isn't mainstream on their cellphone.

I'm gonna have to agree with the parent here, but touch on a different aspect.
In Korea there is a big thing about "I must have something better than that guy." I say this because I'm Korean (South, this may not apply to North) (note- not all Koreans will necessarily agree with me, but most that I've spoken with have). I personally believe that this and the population density had a major part in making Korea the most broadband connected country in the world (too lazy for links). Other factors played a role (like government money), but again I think the main thing is that "Hey my neighbor has broadband? Well I should get some better broadband!"

This carries over directly to gaming. First off, they can use the broadband for gaming. Second, they must become better than the guy who just beat them. If you look at Lineage gamers, they'll even murder each other over events in game. I got a link for that.
The society plays a huge role in how gaming has risen in Korea. Moreso than you may think.

I looked at the local university surplus selling area, and their overheads were $75. They were old too. I checked with my old high school, and they didn't have any available. It seems that these are harder to find than necessary.

The reason for the interest in the fresnel isn't to burn things (I actually never thought of that...), but because I'm working on a DIY LCD projector, and a fresnel is a key component in focusing as much light as you can through the LCD. Incidentally, tempered glass is also a key component due to the heat from the focused light.

They really need to step up the pace on how they go about this stuff. The words "OpenGL 2.0" were floating around a loooonng time ago. In the time that has passed since I believe I've seen a few releases of DirectX. Now I'm all for OpenGL, but if they wish to be a decent alternative to DirectX, then they need to step up the pace, and stop squabbling over shiznit (I think NVIDIA and ATI are that the forefront of that). Honestly though, I can't wait for it to come out. It may the "push" needed to spur more Linux gaming. And that would be awesome.
