I wonder if my equally anecdotal success with Vista will get the same sort of mod points the parent did...
Out of the box everything worked. Period. Wifi connected and downloaded my graphics drivers from Windows Update. After some reboots (admittedly more than I would like) everything went smoothly. I have only had a few freezes in my four months of use. The systems hibernates and restores without any trouble 100% of the time (more than I can say for ubuntu). The battery seems to last longer as well. Everything is snappy and I think the accelerated window manager is more subtle and tastefully done than compiz or beryl. Don't get me wrong, I love linux and use it whenever I don't need access to windows apps but there's no point in pretending like Vista is garbage. In my opinion it's a substancial upgrade over XP.

foobar2000 is my favorite media player for windows. does one thing very well without any of the pointless eye candy. the installer is 1.6MB and it has some really nice plugins (.ape decoding and last.fm updater).
Could someone explain the key differences between GPLv2 and GLPv3? I'd appreciate it and I'm sure many other non-lawyer types would as well. Thanks in advance scholarly slashdotter...
DRM exists entirely for the protection of the RIAA, not Microsoft. This will only increase the popularity of the Zune. An mp3 player that can share files over wifi with no restrictions, sign me up. I can't see Microsoft being too proactive about locking down the DRM again.
Maybe its time for the FCC to wake up and realize that open access isnt going to inhibit growth, it will enhibit AT&T's version of growth which has always been expand and strangle out competition in markets they want to be in and own enough spectrum to make expansion into area's they may not even see as worthwhile difficult for anyone else to grab a foothold in.
Is it just me or is anyone else hoping Microsoft drags Novell down into the muck? This would be a good lesson to anyone else considering getting in bed with them.

IMHO Windows Media Player 11 is much better than iTunes at this point. It's responsive, good looking, downloads cover art from the web, rips and burns audio CDs with ease, and keeps good tabs on the additions/removals from my media library. I'll never be accused of being a Microsoft fan but this is one of their upgrades that went well. Really the only music organizer that I like as much is Amarok which isn't an option for my Vista machine.
Is this to imply that carrying around 2oz of a drug that has less of a psychological effect than alcohol should be punished by 6 months in jail and a career-ruining federal offense on your record? What's more - are you saying it's more criminal than stealing a copyrighted work and distributing it to thousands?
listen, we all hate the riaa. they use thug tactics and lobbyists to get their way here in the states and often overseas. but...
if you believe they ever saw one red cent from allofmp3.com you're nuts. it's one thing to attack potential consumers for exchanging music online. it's another to go after a company that is turning a profit on your product without your consent. what allofmp3 is doing is plainly immoral. they may be protected by some loophole in the russian copyright law but that doesn't make what they're doing okay. the riaa has the moral high ground here, like it or not.
VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.com) has an open source edition of their virtualization software which is easy to use, cross platform, and works well on my machine. It can also read vmware disk images which should make transitioning pretty painless. The closed source (but still free as in beer) version also supports USB and simple file sharing between guest and host. I'm currently using it to run Windows XP inside my Vista machine to take care of compatibility issues.

i certainly hope most people wouldn't write it that way!

Did you forget how to spell inhibit mid-sentence?
What sort of gain can the typical linux user expect because of this?
