Absolutely the racist undertones should be avoided. There is an important thing to remember here - though. Unlike what was typically the case in America and Europe in the early 1900s, the Chinese government can silence detractors that want to hobble the economy in favor of protecting the environment. Also, America's "sordid" past was before most people were aware of concept of global warming and carcinogens. China is acting irresponsibly and the structure of their government almost ensures that things aren't going to get much better any time soon.

The thing about Neal Boortz (and like minded people) is that they don't seem to care that juicing ANWR and the outer continental shelf is just a way to offload a huge problem from their generation onto ours. Does he, or anyone, really believe that if we drove gas prices back down to $2 a gallon we'd have the wherewithal to realize we should still be looking for alternative fuels? We didn't do it in the 80s, why would we do it now? This is a good kick in the pants and I wouldn't support any measure to soften the blow.

VLIW is just a RISC machine in which the compiler does all the optimization (branch prediction, hazard detection, etc). Normally VLIW machines fetch multiple instructions at once and issue them without fear of any hazards because the compiler takes care of it. Very neat idea, but not CISC

Come on. You really think Microsoft wants to increase the vulnerability of old versions of Office (which are still the vast majority in corporate America). This not only makes their software looks bad, it increases the amount of work they have to do to support the older versions (yes, they still support Office 2003). Also, it doesn't use 30% of your resources for DRM, that's a made up statistic unless you're running Vista on your toaster. I've never heard of one person's media experience thwarted by Vista's legendary DRM. I double click an mp3 file and it plays, same with any other file I have the decoder for. I know this runs counter to the "et tu billy" culture that has developed around here but it is worth mentioning that Bill Gates is a philanthropist at heart. He has given away an estimated 29 billion USD since the year 2000. His influence at Microsoft is still considerable even if he doesn't have the fancy title on his office he once did. Maybe Gates thinks he can create some useful software and give it away for free. I doubt Microsoft can compete with an already mature and free Linux product in this market but I support the competition. We shouldn't be so fast to judge.
