So we have a device with a practically global broadband internet connection and we need a 20 gig HD to lop on the side for our contacts and music? I can't wait for the day when all the disk space the average consumer needs (see: non tin-foil hat wearer) can be located on a server farm in Kansas. Eventually all a computer/cellphone needs will be enough memory to load an OS and connect to the internet.
Hard drive in my cell phone.... no thanks. I can handle my ipod dying but losing my contacts and ability to receive calls is devastating to some of us. Apple got that part right, this is a phone first and a media player second.
Backwards compatibility. Try running some OS9 software under OSX, not a fun thing. I can still run Orcad PSPICE (fairly ancient circuit modeling software) on Windows Vista. That's what users want, widgets and fancy window decorations are nice but they don't pay the bills.
Do any college students know when Vista will be available on MSDNAA? I keep looking but I'm still stuck with XP. Also, what version of Vista can we expect?
And anyway, sampling has been going on forever in hip-hop. (see Will Smith - Wild Wild West vs Stevie Wonder - I Wish). The hip-hop cred of Will Smith notwithstanding.
It's really better to judge art on its own merit anyway. There is always going to be some creative theft, it's called inspiration.
I know slashdotters pride themselves on running old machines because they don't need all that fancy stuff but windows 3.1... come on. How can you be productive when you can't load document files that people email you (provided they're running a semi-modern version of office)? With desktops so cheap these days (especially if you're willing to go with a celeron or sempron) there is no excuse for running such old hardware.
I mean for real slashdot cred you should be running NetBSD; windows 3.1 just makes you sound lazy.
Except SETI will likely never tell us if there is life in the universe. The two possible outcomes of the SETI project are either "yes" or "maybe" (the latter being the more likely). I'm not saying SETI isn't a worthwhile pursuit but I'd rather see my CPU cycles going into more pressing matters. It's not just about the magnitude of the discovery possible, it's also about the likelihood.
you may be able to turn someone's credit card number into an asymetric cipher hidden inside a jpeg of his last family reunion but you can't stop the idiot user from writing his password on a sticky note on the side of his monitor.

Company tries to prevent theft of product

How long until Solaris is just another Linux distribution?
- Apple suing over ripped off icons for smartphones = protecting their copyright
- RIAA suing people who distribute copyrighted songs = boycott
It is a catchy tune. All is forgiven.

Why would you run firefox under wine? It's available native to any operating system it can compile under (Windows, OSX, Linux, *BSD, Solaris, etc)
they're anti-FOSS and have no formal Linux support mechanisms worth mentioning
Isn't Yellow Dog Linux the official operating system of the PS3? Can't say that for xbox...
how is a slashdotter supposed to be socially comfortable without poor lighting?
i'm not buying until someone invents a 5W CFB
Confirmed: Moon has put on the dreaded freshman 15

you must be new here
I've had these stickers on my powerbook for years now.
The moment Steve Jobs says "and one more thing" it turns blood red and it's time to buy a new one.
Well the obvious difference is the RIAA gets 100% of that $0.005 and 0% of allofmp3's $0.05
I mean I hate the RIAA's practices as much as the next guy but let's keep our arguments within reason
"Terrible news for the Barbie/Furbie fetishists out there"
This wasn't even a punchline
maybe tomorrow we can have an article about the article about the article about image installs in windows vista.
Now all that's left is to perfect my infinite volume case

No I will not make out with you
Have you read Pitchfork lately? It's indie pandering at its worst.

While we're at it let's make bankrobbing legal because of its role in beefing up safe security.
I can't wait to see an ass-wormer going through an MRI, it'll be like when they pulled that bug out of Neo's stomach.
