  2. Ever wonder why ice melts? on How Ice Melts · · Score: 3, Interesting

    a. Summary is plagiarized from the article, unless I've missed some nested quotes.
    b. These guys took this problem because "the earliest phase of melting has never been seen" but they didn't do that either! All they did was make "see-through crystals that are like small beads and are visible in an optical microscope." Doesn't sound like a hell of a lot of progress to me; anyone care to elaborate?
    c. Their main result seems to be that the melting process starts at crystal defects and spreads to create liquidy regions within the crystal. Again, can anyone explain why the melting might not start at defects - the weak points?
I'm sure there's something neater here than I'm seeing; it would be nice if the article had more info.

I believe the idea was that a whole village would purchase one together, or that some governing body would give them funds to do so. That way the village could have much easier access to information about market conditions, weather, etc. I'm not sure if the villagers ended up getting access to the Net after all (having lived in India for a while, I would guess not), but the Simputer project didn't fail because its cost was all that high. As I understand it, it failed because its competitors decreased their prices much more quickly than it could keep up.

Well, let's look a little further back. The N64 had Super Mario 64, which was amazing. The PS1's real breakout title was Final Fantasy 7; even though it wasn't really a launch game, it gave the system a crucial boost over the Sega Saturn (esp. in Japan). I think it's fair to say that the drop in launch title quality is a consequence of the first to market madness. I miss the old days when Nintendo just didn't give a fuck when you wanted a game.

BTW, I didn't hate Halo, but I thought it was mediocre. Halo (1, 2) are fun just because it's so easy to get multiplayer games; Perfect Dark and Goldeneye were much better.
