    If you don't have the proper screwdriver handy, try drilling through the screws.

    Be careful when using a drill bit that's small enough to wear away a screw of the type used to secure hard drives. Because of their size, they have a tendancy to snap when caught on jagged metal. It's not nice having little pieces of drill bit bouncing into your face.

    The source for Doom/Doom2 engine was GPL'd years ago. You still have to pay for a copy of the game in order to legally play their levels.

    The Aliens TC was s*tcanned by the studio almost immediately after it came out. Bummer. The guys who created that created a work of art IMHO. I saw an early beta and was blown away by the textures alone.

    I'd love to be able to point you to a copy but I never got to download the thing. I was on vacation the week it came out, and it was gone by the time I got back.

    This is one of a couple of reasons why ID should be respected not only in the Gaming Industry, but in the Software Industry in general.

    They create awesome games, awesome software. The technology rocks and is generally the cutting edge for their market.

    Then a couple of years later they open up the whole thing and give it away. "Here community, take this and learn." Classy setup they have there.

    Also, don't forget they started this with Wolfenstein. I think this was 1995. So they've been doing it for a while. They were one of the first commercial game houses to do so, if not THE first.

    And then if you know Perl, you can always use one of the nifty graphics packages like GD to create your graphs.

    Parse the datafile, plot your lines, and write the .png file. It's been a while since I've used these types of packages myself, but I remember the usage being almost trivial.

    I feel like a sheep for having fallen for the Diamond is Forever crap.

    Fortunately(?) when I got engaged I wasn't making a lot of money and could only afford a 3/4 carat diamond. So I don't feel as bad as I would had I bought a bigger rock.

    The way I see it, a package is a convenience that doesn't necessarily have to be there. Some guy somewhere put it together this time, but there's nothing that promises that the next version of whatever it is will be packaged.

    So I try not to get lazy and rely on packages. I'll only use them if I'm in a rush or if I'm not familiar with the software.

    Even then, I'll try to build from a source RPM, to get a feel for what the build process is like.

    Never could figure that one out.

    But how is it rude when I'm specifically asking for this. I don't care if they want to spend $10 or $100. Just drop it in an envelope and exchange giftw with me. No problem.

    Why isn't it considered rude to burden someone with something unwanted and unneeded? I happen to think so, and I go out of my way to either buy something that the recipient can really use, or give them the means to do so themselves.

    I can't understand why people don't think that way.
