  1. Shuttle Buran on The Boeing 727-200 Airplane Home · · Score: 1

This is almost as bad as the Russians turning one of the Burans into a tourist attraction.

Yeah, it's only a prototype, but it's still funny.

  2. Some good 'new' bands worth paying for on Copy Protection On CDs Is 'Worthless' · · Score: 1

    Nickelback
    Matchbox 20
    Creed
    Govt. Mule
Dream Theater (OK, not so new)
    Spock's Beard
    Counting Crows

Maybe you don't like my taste, but I can tell you that I look forward to these bands' new releases much the same way I looked forward to new Rush, Judas Priest, Metallica & U2 albums in the 80's.

Yeah, a lot of new stuff is crap. But no matter what genre you enjoy, there IS good stuff to be found.

  3. 3 minute killer on Copy Protection On CDs Is 'Worthless' · · Score: 1

Yeah, but for the 3 miuntes that it'll take him to come, the poor girl (guy?) will only be able to charge $2.50.

This is why Diddyon can't get a date. It's not worth his potential partner's time.

  4. MY laptop... on The Ethics of Desktop Chips Stuffed Into Laptop PCs · · Score: 1

My laptop. Mine. I paid for it.

If I want to do something with that laptop that will use up my batteries in 10 minutes I should be able to.

Who the hell are Dell or Intel to tell me that I can't?

This is almost as bad as the record companies telling me I can't use my computer to make a backup of music I've purchased.

I'm getting a little tired of big companes telling me what I can & can't do.

    George is getting ANGRY!

  5. 2600 Magazine & DECSS... on Doom 3 Alpha Leaked · · Score: 1

...is an example of how a link can be illegal.

Not that the MPAA was really right about their claims, but courts have decided more than once that providing a link to something unauthorized is illegal.

In this case, the code to the game was STOLEN. This isn't d3test. It's not shareware. It's iD's property. Property that ws intened to be viewed at a show, not played on every little asshole's machine.

    Nuff said.

  6. Re:Why(read this one please) on Cassini's First Glimpse of Saturn · · Score: 2, Interesting

    >> know this is cool and all... but still... we have so many problems on our own earth... shouldn't we solve those first?

In my view it's good for mankind that we do stuff like this despite all our little 'tribal warfare' related problems. Maybe, just maybe as more discoveries are made out there, Mankind will embrace a sense of wonder. ....How do I say this??

If Mankind can become enlightened enough to see that there's a whole universe out there to explore and learn about, maybe fighting over rocks(land) and colored rags(flags) and who's god is better, will take a back seat to a drive to do things for everyone's good.

Like put effort into making discoveries that will cure more diseases, and educate our people further, and give us the foundation we need to jump to the next level.

Can you imagine what we could accomplish if we were all pulling together instead of threatening to nuke the shit out of each other?

We really need to wake up & see that there are bigger and better things than our puny little planet out there.

And if we don't get our act together soon mankind will probably never have the foundation/knowledge to set foot on another planet, or get a suntan from another star.

Myself, I feel really inspired when I see new pictures like this. It makes me want to work harder at what I do, and it makes me wish that we could all stop fighting and go outside and look at the sky.

  8. Ugly on PumpkinPC v1.0 Makes Its Hallowe'en Debut · · Score: 0, Flamebait

This may be a lame reply, but...

That thing is butt ugly. And yeah, it will eventually start to rot and smell. Just what one wants in their computer romm eh?

Why take the time to do this? For some stupid contest? I don't get it.

I'd rather spend a couple of hours doing something to advance my skills like learning a new language or learning how to do something new in a language I already know.

You know, something that may help me make money at some point, or at least keep my job when my company starts shipping some operations off to India or Lithuania.

I think these case mods are getting out of hand... they're silly and useless.

    It's offtopic but I can't help myself...

Meanwhile, that $9000 that Microsoft hopes to gain will pay the annual salaries of 2 of their programmers in India.

No wonder Bill is so frigging rich.

  10. Re:This isnt new on IBM Wants CPU Time To Be A Metered Utility · · Score: 1

    >>In the mainframe world cpu cycles are already a potential billable transaction

In my shop they ARE billable.

My group has been getting hit with orders to reduce our CPU (and DASD) usage by 25%. Kinda' tough order to fill when you need the time and space to crunch numbers.

What the suits can't understand is that we can't change the laws of physics. Those bits of data have to be processed one at a time.... each one takes a measurable amount of time.. 22 million records just doesn't appear instantaniously.

It's kind of funny that IBM wants to bill us for the very thing that we're trying to reduce usage of anyway.

  11. Re:Paint Tree on Microsoft Vandalizes NYC · · Score: 1

The footsteps you mention were funded/painted by a group of artists who wanted to raise awareness about nuclear proliferation.

The footsteps were supposed to represent vaporized people.

They're still around in Tribecca, and I've seen them near Carnegie Hall too.

I have no idea what the tools are about.

Other mass-painted stuff in NYC includes Andre The Giant and Gary Coleman. There's also that Revs and Cost debate... but that seems to have died down in the last few years.

  12. Perl 4 is still in production on Extending and Embedding Perl · · Score: 1

In a good number of shops, including the one I work for there is still legacy Perl 4 code in prod.

The guy that runs our UNIX services says that they're slowly phasing it out, and expect to be done by mid 2004.

Nobody has touched this old code till' present because, well, they were afraid of screwin up the prod environment.

My point? Perl 5 is much more widespread than 4. Given that, and Larry's statments that 5 code will run on the 6 interpreter, I think that it's safe to buy Perl5 books. The dialect isn't going to die anytime soon methinks.
