I have had several DVD issues from the very beginning. It doesn't seem to have gotten *worse*, maybe better in my experience. The only DVD I have had problems with lately was Bruce Almighty. You could see the damage on the disc. Not a scratch, but an oval shaped damage within the layers themselves. I have also had a few DVDs that partially wouldn't work in Apex players that work absolutely fine in my Sony DVD players.
Get a DLP Projector. I've had one for about 6 months and I love it. Sure it cost me $2K, but you can (especially now) get them a lot cheaper. Games are awesome on an 8' diagonal screen =). No burn in, plus it is portable. I've taken my "big screen" over to my friend's house on occasion to play some games. I now have two other friends that invested into projectors. I've seen people pay more for HDTVs that give a smaller screen and look so much worse than my projector achieves. There are a few negatives on projectors (Lumens (if too low), bulb wears out, need a screen/wall to project on, pixel rise and fall (LCD)), but if you do your research you should be able to resolve these issues.
I guess I am one of the 75% that doesn't really care about online gaming on my console. I won't say you are incorrect about MOST online players buying more games since I never worked at EB. I will say you are wrong about me and everyone I know. I've bought enough console games to average around 2 games a week since the PS2 came out. Yes, that is more than 300 games. I own 1 XBox game and 0 (that I know of) console games with online features. My point is that you don't have to play online games to be a "Hardcore" gamer.
Keeping on the topic, if I were to play online games I would likely choose the XBox because of the hard drive and network card being built in.
Look at computrainer.com. My friend has one of those and I think it is exactly what you are talking about. I tried it out and was pretty impressed. He also has a nice projector beamed onto his wall. With his bikes in front of it, it makes it pretty realistic.
He also has the same bikes hooked up to his PS2, which makes for some tough racing games!
Dude, what about the Contra game that just came out, by Konami even. It IS a 2D game. But I totally agree with you, I would love a Castlevania game on a 3D console with 2D gameplay. I thought that I heard that Konami was doing this anyway.

I had a friend that put "Plays video games" on his resume. LOL. And that is how he ended up getting laid off... Playing video games at work.

Shadowrun - I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet
Knights of Legend - or a sequel
