Well, Holland isn't THAT big (like Maine, I thought), but IIRC it is done by some national agency and has the KPN (national telecom operator) mandatory equipment installed for eavesdropping (possibly) every phone (at least land-lines).

There is some concern in the Netherlands, however, that eavesdropping is done on laywer/client calls (probably the client is tapped already). Although this information can't be used in court, the laywers are not amused. It is surely easier to get the evidence, if you know the answers!

I think the decision made by the court in England is correct (in my point of view). In this case the investigation of the genes is also needed to save a life (which is good), but it is a first of a kind. Ethical issues like choosing attributes of a human being are possible, but are they desirable. This one is the first of a process which is ending with you or me at the doctors desk 'designing' our breed. And a female-male child is not necessary anymore. Being a clone of your father, mother, or a child of a homosexual couple will be possible.
Of all those possibilities, I think that cloning is a bad thing. Certainly on a large scale: it makes a living species vunerable for deceases. See the decease as a script kiddie with a list of which OS is running where. Once he got a tool he can break in anywhere he wants.

In the comments I've read (didn't read them all) most people say that Linux will be changed in the wrong direction (i.e. from the command line). Some remarks to things I've read:

    - What has a nice OS to do with a GUI? GUI is on top of it! And you can design an GUI the way you want.
    - Thus a GUI and a CLI can live next to each other
    - Flexibility also includes being able to use the mouse for actions.
    - If I write a nice script I gonna use often, I want to be able to put it behind a button and never care about it anymore.

Some other thing. As stated in the article, there are many different kind of users. Geek to dumbo. And the "masses" will buy the best designed distribution, the geeks get slackware or so.

And to respond to this particular comment:
    Linux is multi-user, isn't it?
What is the programming side used for in your case? Well designed GUI's for MS?
