GIF is a lossless format, unlike jpg. You dont see many company logos in jpg format.
I don't know why png has not been embraced. Probably has something to do with the web's history of browser incompatibility, etc.
Web designers are trained to design for the lowest common denominator.
I got a recent bid for a website that requires the website to be version 3 compatible. While its now safe to say we can drop version 3 support, the conception is we still need to support it. After all there are still 486's out there in service (public libraries, non-profits, etc.).
Scary as it is, there is still a sizeable percentage of web users using version 4 browsers.
It's just her job and I have to take my hat off to her. She did a good job under alot of pressure. It isn't easy bearing the ire of geekdom and the file sharing generation.
Anyways, she is probably more interested in her career and investments than advocating policy, unless that policy helps her investments.

My point is Ford endorsed FutureTruck 2003. They are focusing, as many manufacturers, on having more fuel efficient vehicles. You cant take that away from auto makers.
"It seems like a fun competition, but really more about teaching students than teaching auto engineers." Ok...how about teaching students about being an auto engineer? How about getting them excited about relavant problems? Wouldn't participation in this competition look good to an automaker hiring engineers?
"None of this stuff is new" But it is new. These are prototyped vehicles that get good gas mileage. Just because there are not any "earth shattering" technologies coming out of this doesn't mean this competition has no merit. Besides, it takes a while for most programs for great things come forth.
"I doubt you'll see many people lining up for one made out of carbon fiber and hauling around a 300V battery pack." The purpose of R&D is to research (learn about) alternatives. Marketability is not the goal of this competition.
I know that Slashdot is all about "free speech", but swearing at people (rtfa) is still considered rude.
Not to be a troll, but Michael's comment "Too bad Ford isn't actually using any of this hard work" is typical Michael. He is a liberal and seems to have an axe to grind with the automakers, oil producers, Christian right-wing organizations, which is fine. But please don't let this disort your judgement.
The fact that Ford sponsors this tournament means they, at least, acknowledge this is a problem. It also takes years to incorporate ideas into production automobiles. Ford is developing Hydrogen vehicles and do have hybrid cars on the market.
It just seems like no matter what Ford or any other automaker does, they will be viewed by some as pro-pollution and "get all the money they can at all costs to humanity".
I'm also an American. I agree that throwing food at the problem doesn't do much other than make us feel better.
I'm just talking about Afganistan. About $500 million has been apportioned to Afganistan. Why not improve their infrastructure or give them some strategic aid to jumpstart their economy?
Other countries should do more to help also.
I also understand that a region needs stability to really help the people. Hopefully the U.N. grows teeth and makes dictators and other human rights abusers accountable to their actions. I mean by action instead of lip service.
Does this patent mean absolutely nobody can make a program that searches for domain names, or nobody can sell the software without Verisign's premission?
Also, it costs lots of money to enforce patents. Amazon would only go after the big fish who are "breaking" their patent.

The purpose of the patent is more pragmatic instead of academic. The patent system encourages innovation by protecting the invention/discovery from being copied. It also promotes the spread of knowledge by documenting the innovation.
The patent system is designed as our lawmakers see fit, not to satisfy academic categorization.
The biomedical companies told lawmakers that they needed incentive to spend billions to decode the genome. Without patents, a company would spend hundreds of millions of research money just to have a generic drug company selling a knockoff. So yes, technically DNA sequencing is a discovery, but pratically it provided incentive to industry to sequence it much faster than it would have been done with research institutions (sponsored by industry) alone.
Of course the patent needs major reformation, but thats a different topic.
As we abstract more, we lose touch with the lower layers. As more abstractions are introduced, new classes of bugs are also introduced.
So while it is easier to optimize software architecture and see other "high level" system design bugs, more "low level" bugs will creep in from this abstraction.

It is very hard to price a prototype.
Before a good cost estimate can take place, the final design and assembly process needs to be developed.

You can't judge the Egyptian people for their government.
Besides, if #2 is the case, then would those in power allow the citizens to remove them from power?
The Egyptian scholars already "know" that the Matrix isn't logically sound.
The Matrix doesn't need to be logically sound to encourage people to think outside their box and question things.
Maybe that's what they are afraid of.
Then again, a cult could be started. They have been inspired from lesser circumstances.

Isn't this the typical tribal human instinct?
We like ourselves and our tribe.
Maybe things are different on the other side of the pond, but isn't there the same thing in Europe?
It's sad that most of what I hear about the EU is they are America's competitors. (I live in the US btw).
Is this true? Is collaboration possible?
Are American's really seen as crazy in Europe (especially France)?
I'm just curious b/c I don't really know any Europeans.
Seems like Europe is more application oriented (cheaper satellites) and the US is more research oriented (Mars, scientific fanfare, etc.).
Another question, can the US match Europe's space business model?
Why not invest more in raising the standard of living for people third world countries?
Ok...maybe the US can cancel one of its Stealth Bombers and add $12 billion to the mix, but thats a different matter.
NASA really needs this to be a success, especially after the Columbia.
Given the past performaces of Mars expeditions, NASA is taking a big risk.
Of course, technology has improved, but is this a prudent bet for NASA?
If Sendo can use this as leverage, even Microsoft will listen.
Besides, what can Microsoft do to hurt Sendo? Refuse to sell Windows software to them?
Microsoft doesn't dominate the Cell phone market. They are just another player.
Does this patent mean absolutely nobody can make a program that searches for domain names, or nobody can sell the software without Verisign's premission?
Competition is a good thing for both Microsoft and OSS.
OSS causes Microsoft to lower its prices so people can afford it.
Microsoft gives "inspiration" for OSS developers to "catch up" and provide more features.
OSS will also do its own innovation for Microsoft to emulate.
IT makes everything more efficient and out standard of living goes up.
Everybody wins.
