  1. All those evil Programmers making patches on Windows 7 Users: You Need SHA-2 Support or No Windows Updates After July 2019 (zdnet.com) · · Score: 1

We've got to plug this hole to stop all those evil doers from corrupting our patches and computing correctly signed patches with SHA-1!!!

  3. Re:Even plain wifi can be done wrong. on Ask Slashdot: Linux Support In Universities? · · Score: 1

I had an issue with my school's wifi and dhcpcd which I figured out had to do with dhcpcd -i parameter was sending it's default, and the wifi AP was
using this field to 'approve' the attaching equipment.

I changed calling "dhcpcd -d" with "dhcpcd -d -i '' " (empty string enclosed with single quotes) and it worked!

Doesn't getting all the students together to distribute the monitors confound the results as the students are

  6. Re:The Seinfeld ads weren't a failure. on Microsoft Uses "I'm a PC" Character In New Ads · · Score: 1

I agree. This 'new' ad is just the 2nd phase in
    a multiphase ad campaign.

If you research how long it takes to put together
an ad, and the high production values of the 'new'
ad, plus all the different people, it adds up to
a significant amount of time. This 'new' ad was
    planned to be here, now.

  7. Re:Automount, libmtp on Syncing Music Players In Linux? · · Score: 1

I had to temporarily disable the UMS subsystem on linux in order for libmtp to work. Something in the UMS subsystem prevented libmtp from accessing the device.
I used the mtp tools to copy all of the music off and erased them.
I exclusively use UMS to connect to my MP3 players without a problem.
In researching how to get to the MTP files, I found the specious comment that 'MTP' was 'invented' for robustness. I know that one cannot draw conclusions from one sample, but my observation was it offers no more protection than DOS.

  9. Why people go to Wal-mart and what they buy on Wal-Mart Squeezing Record Labels to Cut CD Prices · · Score: 1

I don't about you, but when I go to Wal-mart, it's to buy something I need or something I saw advertised.
Then, while you are at the store, you see BrandX at $9.72, why that's less that $10, I'll buy that.
(for myself, for my SO, for little susie's b-day, etc...)

Then there's people who go who just to see ``What does Wal-mart have out on sale today?''

Wal-mart blows stuff out the doors, because people buy stuff they might not otherwise because the price is right.

  10. DVD quality on Could CDRW Disks Replace Videotapes? · · Score: 1

If DVD quality was important, it would come in a case
that was opened when the media was stuck in the drive.

I've been told that the consumer market doesn't like enclosed media. At least with VHS, I can let the 3-year old insert and play their favorite tapes.
You think I'm going to let the kids play with DVD's ?

Here's one for the Conspiracy Theorists: Bare Media is a plot by the Content Distributors to sell more product!
