Ya Digital Nation, that's it....couldn't remember. Well they clearly showed the kid at his computer, that was coming through the Webcam. You think the kid knew he was being watched?
Yowsers! I pulled 16 runs in my house, that would have been $1600. Got a bunch of Cat5e end boxes free from a local cabling guy, an afternoon of work, all the ends and everything (panel, jacks etc) I had to buy. Ended up costing me about $250.
I think it was the 5th estate (I think...but don't hold me to it) doing a feature on some school using laptops only and using all kinds of new techniques including social networking. They were saying how modern they were and actually demonstrated the laptops and how they could activate the webcam and even demonstrated with a live image of some kid going about his school work. Gave me the creeps and I was thinking this is technology usage gone amuck. I would never allow this on my kids laptop. These school admins were proud of it.....ridiculous.
You make some good observations. Unfortunately it is laced with anger and sarcasm which does more to hinder your point then make it. For your average tech that is not a big deal, but as an "IT manager at a major University" you should know that to make your point effectively it is better not to talk to people like they have no clue. Pro tip: chill out a little and stick to the facts. Make a recommendation based on a sensible analysis of the issue. This will go further then using CAPS TO MAKE YOUR POINT and telling people that if they don't do it the way you believe to be correct it may be because "your local IT guys just suck."
Every time there is a "beware Chinese" article AC comes along and asks if, on the same note, we can trust American. Maybe not, but that is not the question. Start your own thread because the reasons for not trusting are different and that is not the question.
I also welcome this, just sit back and let "Supply and Demand" take its course. If the model is sound and delivers value to those who read the Times then its a good thing for them. If not, readership goes way down and they have other problems they need to address. I still can't wrap my head around the whole online news business model. There are tonnes of news outlets easily accessible to all for free. I don't see much differentiation out there, and those that have differentiated themselves are able to implement paywalls and thrive. We'll see, but to succeed you have to be more then just the usual noise.
Here here, wise words. I understand the context you said 1000 years in, but it does make me wonder what it was like before the industrial revolution. Because things have really changed more in the past 100 years then they did in the 1000's before it. So I wonder what things highlighted the generation gaps back then, or were people just focusing so much energy on surviving that it wasn't as much of an issue.
Of course, these two products compete directly with their two big cash cows. OO may not seriously compete today, but these things change and Microsoft can't get complacent. Is it any surprise that they would take any competitors seriously? I think they are smart enough to know that both Linux and OO are strong products and you really only need a few leaders out there to use these things successfully before others start slowly migrating these products into their environments, and what was once guaranteed profits start to trickle away slowly. Even if companies target areas to use these free products in less critical areas this hurts them. I know in our organization we could easily replace some of our 1500 servers with Linux where right now no matter how light the load or low priority the system is we dump W2K3 or 8 on it. We couldn't do it on all, but easily on some and nobody would even notice. The only thing that stops it is fear of the unknown.
Oh god no. We love where we live. On the grand scheme of things its a minor inconvenience. Just something that needs to be addressed though.
Neat solution on the tiling.
Saw that on TV and recommended it to a buddy of mine who is on city water. Unfortunately not an option here as I am on a well. Very elegant solution though.
Excellent, reading your other posts....I also have a backup pump in my sump pit that I just put in but its all plugged into my main power right now. Great if my main pump fails but pretty useless if the power goes out. If that happens in March for any extended period I may as well dock the boat in the basement. I am looking at a generator that comes on automatically when the power goes out which powers a seperate panel. They sell them at home depot and seem to be pretty sweet. They run on propane. The upshot is that it has room for other circuits. In the meantime I would like to have some kind/anykind of fall back. This back can't handle carrying buckets of water up the stairs and wouldn't be able to keep up for any length of time anyway.:-)
Completely pointless from a geek perspective. Totally mind numbing, "rather have root canal then write that" kind of work. From a user perspective it is not pointless and the preferred way. And so it goes, round and round. Allthough I do think a double standard exists. Totally acceptable to send someone to Microsoft Technet KB for info. They are totally tickled if they can find an answer there but send them to Ubuntu forums and "pffft....I don't have time for that"
"I'm quitting my job, selling everything I own, and I'll have nothing on my mind but the present."
Good luck to you sir. Ultimately, all the shit that you own ends up owning you and you seem like a person who wants to experience a different way. Cheers.
I never asked for them. I assumed I would get an image but I indeed got the full install version of Windows. I have reinstalled other Dell laptops recently and they were clean installs.
Seriously, if the internet was turned off all the mindless drones that use it would be screwed until people like the ones that come to Slashdot started using their imagination. They would start setting up local wireless mesh networks. As soon as that started to explode and a different set of folks started profiting the same old usual business suspects would join in and be a part of the new thing. Where money is made people and business follow. It would evolve. The genie is out of the bottle, too much money to be made and too much information that wants to be made free and accessible. Supply and demand.

...so we created a fb group instead. Finished that for ya.
I look forward to the day that I can express this opinion using my own account and not as AC. ...ah crap!

I am interested in your sump pump backup. I am looking for a solution. How long does it last? Where did you get the battery? Any info appreciated.
And then you snapped out of your fantasy and returned to your movie.
Shutup Geordi, every since creating that warp bubble you have been so smug. Q
Then just change the gravitational constant of the universe....duh

That's a pretty big hole

That's not a work dress code. It's a societal one. Unless you are at the beach.
