You are way off. 1st off the neuro nets in use today doing amazing things are based off a really really simplistic abstracted concept of how neurons work. You don't have to simulate the whole thing, you can crudely approximate it and get world changing results and we've already done this using a concept from the 1940s. With advances in our knowledge we can make the approximation more accurate without simulating all the details--- in fact, I worked with a guy for a short bit who was working on a mainframe that was simulating 100s of neurons down to the ion flow and chemistry and they were not doing it thinking we'll buy a bigger computer someday, they were doing it to discover more which would be used in an abstraction that didn't require all the complexity of the physical world and millions of years of attempts to find - it is much better for a digital machine to do digital work not to simulate analog which is what you are thinking of. We don't simulate analog on computers; we convert analog into digital then use digital techniques to simulate the analog - usually highly abstracted as well -- because an approximate result is enough (it is analog, there is no exact result you can only ever hope to approximate it.) Given the rate of high-resolution analog simulation of brains going on now it wouldn't take a planet sized computer to do it but it is out of practical reach for now.
They'll simulate a human brain scan SOON. it won't do much for quite a while afterwards - once it does anything meaningful we'll read the press release. The first ones will be simple neurons networked to model the brain scan; something that is probably possible today if somebody would fund it. Brain imagining should be far enough, like probably in the last few years. I don't think a cloned brain network will work because that network is heavily influenced by external factors (like behavior at operating temp) which is why people are trying to improve the abstract model and simplify it... it could be the 1st ones are still dead simple but they know how to adjust the scanned brain's network to compensate. Me, I think many of those difficult problems will be solved by AI powered tools. We you do get something that begins to approximate a mind I think the scifi people will be wrong, the machines will be erratic and insane. It'll take a long time before they are functional (even then likely by self-training simulations which would still produce insane AIs that are not predictable.) If you mess with AI programming a bit you'll get what I'm talking about. Realistically, the practical AI is what the effort is put into-- the people who think of AI as Applied Intelligence because that is mostly what is going on - we can grasp and understand narrow niches like spam filtering, plus it produces useful stuff now - the old AI stuff likely will never grasp it all, or if they do they can't know they actually achieved it. Not that such research is not beneficial long term.
You don't know what you are talking about. I don't know where to begin with most the comments on here...
H-1B Visa is ok if it is not abused; capitalists will by nature abuse it because the last thing a capitalist wants is to hire anybody. That is just the nature of how it works in the real world. Wages are too low and all the evidence points to it if you just do some basic research; the progress of the world catching up is not the only factor-- it is a factor but life is not so simple. Some brighter people are realizing a class war has been going on but direct their anger to the wrong places (one of the most extreme examples is the tea party fanatics in the USA; the suckers-- not the astroturf people.) Visa people are not THE big problem but they are probably a small part of the problem; not worth the time and besides, they would be a symptom of a bigger problem rather than a cause of anything.
Education. The world was a behind the USA and a few other nations. Staying the same means that over the decades the other nations caught up. More nations continue to advance and catch up. The differences are smaller today. This is another example of using simplistic out dated metrics. In the past, there was kilometers of difference between the competitors and at the top today we are measuring millimeters between them. We fuss about not being top when that amounts to nothing important for the top 20. Americans sucked at math for generations; but they didn't have the competition they do now, nor was that skill as important as it is today (more tech/science jobs.) Also USA public education system includes everybody so their results in some metrics will be lower than those having different systems that happen to be geared better for a particular metric being used. Education is not business. You can't dump money into it and expect results nor can you expect to extract the same amount as others - it is not a factory production line. It is more like mining, some places just have better source materials... Yeah, that was a jab at American culture.
Web based education is BS. Correspondence schools were never that valuable for a reason... but we've forgot all of those reasons because we have technology, which is viewed like some sort of magical force by too many people-- it is the new magical faith of the time; while science was during the 50s-70s. Faster correspondence with a bit of interaction doesn't change things as much as people like to think it does. But just to put that in perspective, one reasons colleges were superior was because of the type of people who went to them instead (better source material, picky filtering.) Now college is a big business and everybody wants in... College wasn't solely about job training - if you define it as job training then sure, trade schools and everything in that realm suits the situation perfectly. People should do that and stop harming college... but we want that elite status...not even contemplating why it ever existed in the first place.
No jobs. More Tech means less jobs. Automation is why the USA doesn't make anything yet we can pull up stats that show we produce more today than we did long ago. Increased productivity should sound bad to workers; people are adopting the owner's mentality and only a few can be owners. Everybody can't be the boss. Corporations that leave and need to be punished severely; instead we reward them and spew their own lines as if it was beneficial to us. The fewer protections the more it'll happen. It doesn't matter if your nation's people are smarter if "good enough" is cheaper and your CEO is going for short term stock gains.
Look up the WW2 GDP to debt ratio. Do not panic yet. Our problems are far far worse than a fictional debt crisis (fictional on a more fundamental level, I'm not denying that within our constructs it isn't a problem.)
The system design is flawed. massive run time errors are going on and we are not even thinking of using a debugger; crashes do not even get honest postmortems... but then we turned off most logging years ago.
You are free to consume; therefore, you are free. If you do not consume you do not matter and we can ignore you exist. starve to death for all we care. You are not a person, you are a consumer; people are corporations and humans are consumers.
Most politicians even think about consumers and sometimes say it but most the time they just call consumers "voters" but it is no different; the current business worldview is required to get into office. Remember, they sell themselves to consumers using the same marketing companies and techniques as products and services. The winner sells the most hope not just by votes but also by raising money. The biggest difference is that false advertizing is a CRIME while false political advertizing is the totally legal norm.
Poor people don't consume. So they don't exist. If they voted there would be laws making it extremely difficult...oh wait, we already have those and blame the "lazy" poor people for not voting. Dehumanize them a little bit and nobody minds them being discriminated against.
I have an open WiFi, few people use it but I don't care it doesn't reach that far. So now I can get warnings and kicked off because I'm kind enough to share WiFi.
I could take down neighbors by using their WiFi...and purposely download monitored content.
I remember people being upset at the government illegally monitoring everybody which included internet not just phones. Now we have private industry doing it all on their own and people are not getting upset? They have to wiretap your internet to figure out what you are doing... (well, technically they don't have to but since nobody cares they may as watch all your traffic... as long as the government is not doing it nobody cares I suppose.) We need lawsuits. These blanket agreements everybody forces now saying you wave your rights to sue is total BS, that has to be shot down too.
That explains why there are so many Zimmerman supporters in the shooting stories... They think it is THAT Zimmerman. I remember Mr. Filesystem which lost files better than he lost evidence... many biased defenders on that one too...

Because religious nuts are messing with us and the progress of societies around the world. Nations like the USA which was founded secular are being turned and history is being rewritten to make it religious. Fewer politicians get elected if they are not religious than in the past. I have made little progress just discussing ideas with my countrymen and if I mention the idea is from Europe then I'm doomed from the start. I don't know why we have to dismiss everything more civil nations do; or merely dismiss something "foreign" and these are just ideas, facts, or logic which can have no ownership or nationality (despite the "IP" idiocy.)
We only have crime here and we have a broken legal system based upon terrorizing defendants to the benefit the legal profession. Crazy acts do not exist here. Some "crimes" are just insane and we really should reclassify many of our crimes as acts of insanity; possibly creating a separate system to manage them. In the USA we removed most our "nuthouses" and put "evil criminals" in jail with everybody else. It is not civil to lock up an antisocial person next to somebody who ate his neighbor; or in this case, next to an unsocial Asperger's guy who is harmless to society. His punishment here is not likely to be fair or cost effective or rehabilitating.
His actions embarrassed the USA so like Wikileaks he must be made an example of; his actions and intent was not harmful but in either case he was beneficial in the grand scheme. He not only shows the security holes but if he found something worth leaking he'd be doing society a service. His intent was to enter illegally and gather info; that is a crime but it is not the cold war spying the extreme laws were created for. Not that we can expect reason to enter our legal system now... they'll terrorize him with idiotic claims hoping he'll settle with something about on par and then give him the max.
In the USA they do not have equal punishment (just look up the racial stats) and 1st timers get it worst of all because they must be "made an example." This guy is positioned to be robbed of proper justice besides the fact the US system is just broken. This guys "crime" is the internet version of trespassing or "breaking and entering" although he didn't break anything, he just entered. A 6 month max crime here if you are a nun setting foot onto a military base (it happens more than you'd think.) He didn't do much actual harm nor is there evidence he had motive to do any such things.
Asperger's in the USA is only something parents pay to get their kids so they can get alternative treatment for their brat in school; any kid with specialize attention will do better in school. Everywhere else they dismiss that stuff as psycho-babble and you don't get jack unless there is a DRUG then it gets as much attention as it is profitable to do so... this means we have dangerous people running free so they can buy expensive drugs they can forget to take.
The Aspergers defense is just a typical slimy lawyer trick to exploit ignorance. If it was any defense it would be for his motives; although, forcing him to be social all the time would be extremely uncomfortable - like putting a normal person into a jail cell with limited social contact.
The UK has no free speech, good nation to promote censorship or criminal punishments for offensive speech.... they do it already over tweets that are less offensive and clearly are applying a double standard. If the UK wants to continue to be anti-speech they should have to be equitable and issue and press charges against the author of the film.
It takes an open mind to go against one's culture and possibly upbringing to apply critical thinking and education to religions devised and evolved in societies severely lacking in both.
To say somebody is close minded for dismissing the existence of Santa Claus, Zeus, or Scientology is just grasping for a defense. There are an infinite number of untestable positions as well as an infinite number of time-consuming difficult to test positions. We only have a finite amount of time.
I wasted too much of my time on religions; they do not deserve the time in our lives they got already.
You "open minded" religious people need to be more "open minded" Satan might the one true god. Jesus might have never existed or if he did he might have been married or GAY... you are not being "open minded"... Do you have a tin foil hat? Why not? WHY TAKE THE RISK if you are open to the possibilities? Have you read the Koran or Book of Mormon? Why are you not open to another prophet?
Pearl Harbor was totally provoked. Learn your history. Amazing how the old propaganda still lingers. FDR was provoking as much as he could because we NEEDED to get into WW2. When you mess with a nation's oil supply that is an actionable provocation Americans today should understand...
I wish I had mod points. I was not aware of this; but I suspected something similar as a result. High spending on contractors has been the real priority for a long time. I was surprised the F22 program managed to actually get cut back; it did make for a big political fight at the time.
The US doesn't know how to conquer; only win battles where massive debt is the deciding factor.
We are more isolated than ever and technology is a major factor driving it. tweets are not legit interaction; video phone is much better... but that is annoying, leave me a video message... and I'll reply with audio later because I look like a mess... that is if I don't tweet because I'm driving or watching a movie...
The story is purely based upon predicted technological advances. Politics is the biggest factor in life, big or small. It is not likely that will happen because human politics will slow, speed up, or warp it all as the tech progresses. The advances in psychology and the tech to aid in applying it will likely render Democracy out of date as it becomes even easier to have working control over the voting populace and we are experiencing that TODAY already. If we are not properly trained and prepared we will only end up slaves who believe they are free and believe they inherently can think on their own without proper preparation/training.
The end of the American Empire is here and we have about 8 years left of transition as it comes to pass. The impact of this will have a huge global impact; greater than what our banksters have already done to the world - which is still going on as it's ripples shake fragile systems around the planet.
We may have cell phones instead of computers; because we can't afford to buy desktops. Those are for 1st world nations.
Afghans have less to lose; their life is really tough they have a long history of resistance and always winning in the long term. It would have to be really really bad for Americans to fight in significant numbers. Take away their vapid TV programming and then something might happen. Romans had their gladiators, we have reality TV. It supports all other methods of control; you'd have to fix or overcome it before you could address all the other control schemes.
Americans can be fired for political bumper stickers. It has happened. Most everybody is at will-- so baring some really foolish moves by the employer you can be fired for no reason whatsoever; also, you can be kicked off/out or refused service for any reason. They don't need to give a reason and if they do there are only a small list of which where you COULD win in court over it.
As Americans become more intolerant and more teens post their lives online for permanent archiving and profiling... it will become interesting - but will the vapid twitter-heads realize why they do not get hired or are laid off or fired?
I would like to see Multiple CAs; I don't know this is possible now because I only ever saw 1 cert configs on my old server.
I'm less concerned with CA breaches than I am with con-men who often easily can buy CA certs. I think the local government should be a CA for every business that incorporates with them (have you seen the paper certificates they give? you could make them yourself, and the business ID numbers are not secure either...) It was harder to incorporate without showing a ton of legit identification than it was to get a cert from a cheap CA...
Me too. Unless you play games, CS people have been fine for 6 years. Typical office related computers probably for 10 years if you don't get forced into the software upgrade cycle.
Extend existing law to 70 years after the death of the corporation. Buy outs are a corporate version of regeneration; they rarely die if they have valuable assets.
We you do get something that begins to approximate a mind I think the scifi people will be wrong, the machines will be erratic and insane.
Those are for 1st world nations.
fyi: I do not own a cell phone.
Americans are just less civilized. period. I live here, I know.
