Maybe it's because I am running Linux, but as far as I can tell, CD-Ex on Windows would work equally well as anything I am using under Linux. Unless you have autoplay turned off (or if you hold down the shift key when inserting) an "Enhanced CD" will install some software to disable ripping. I've never bothered to figure out what exactly it does to prevent the rip from occuring. I generally don't put the "Enhanced CD" into my machine in the first place and I don't let the wife or kid do it either.;)
I have been trying to get my "Linux In Libraries" project going for quite some time. I would love to see a truly open library from the public internet computers to the circulation system. I meet with resistance but I keep on keeping on.
Right now I only have Firefox and Open Office on our public access Windows XP machines. I am in the process of installing Ubuntu Edgy onto a couple space computers. As the XP machines need to be serviced, I will be putting those spare machines out for them to use.:)
For some reason my local library uses Internet explorer and not Firefox on their computers designated for web access only. It's almost enough for me to try to get elected to the library district.
The computers in my library all have Firefox and Open Office installed. Of course, it is impossible to remove IE but I have taken all the links off the desktop, start menu, and quick launch menu. We're making small progress.:)
Takes courage too, look at the dixie chicks. Anything that is not favored by another is deemed to be "unamerican"
Doesn't that just make you sick. Ever since 9/11 you hear people say crap like that. When I hear those words my blood just boils. I tell them that I am an Air Force veteran and served proudly during the first Gulf War but just because I don't agree with something now doesn't mean I'm against America. Now I am neither Democrat or Republican but I do blame the Republican President for starting that little "if you disagree with us you're for the terrorists" line of BS. Ponderous!
"I know this! This is UNIX!" is funny as shit. Okay, it's not funny at all to non-computer-geeks, but neither are the Hollywood gaffs that doctors, lawyers, auto mechanics, and ninja assassins find amusing to people not in those fields.
Speaking of UNIX, one day I was talking to a semi-geek and I brought up UNIX and he wanted to know why in hell I wanted to talk about guys with no penises. HAHAHA! Eunichs never even came to mind for me.
Not only do I think backwards compatibility is very important, but ease of use and being able to use existing hardware are just as important too. I am putting Ubuntu Linux on a few machine for some folks right now and so far it's been going pretty smoothly. Hopefully, I can get my mother-in-law switched over so that she can not only keep her current machine BUT she can stop getting those damn spyware infestations from those crappy screensavers she just loves. LOL.
Isn't this a way to avoid paying for the licensed software on Cisco equipment when it's sold second hand? (Not trolling or anything, I think it's ridiculous for Cisco to demand payment for software that's already been paid for once.)
We do live in the information age/21st century and I am not at all surprised that this happened the way it did. And from what I heard on the news, Radio Shack Employees were told in advance that layoffs were coming in electronic format. What were they expecting?
I bought one of these for my son for his 10th birthday. While I do not care about adding pictures or video, I am very pleased with the ability to plug this thing into a USB port and drag & drop MP3 files onto it. It worked for me without installing ANY software. SWEET! I am also pleased that it has a built in microphone and saves anything you record as a plain old WAV file. You can drag & drop that WAV file to the hard drive. Another great tool for musicians like me who come up with cool riffs for songs we're writing and want to record it real quick (and save it for our boxs set after we've been around for a few decades) and put it on a CD or edit it in your favorite sound editor.
"The point is, ladies and gentlemen, greed is good. Greed works, greed is right. . . . and greed, mark my words, will save not only Teldar Paper but the other malfunctioning corporation called the U.S.A."
seriously, we can actually live without them (ads)... think about it. If I want to participate in an auction I am not going to do it at random because I see an ad. I will go to ebay, or some other site by decision. I hate being forcefeed information from advertisers. I hate commercials too but I guess thats another story. This sounds like a ridiculous idea to me.
You may hate ads but much like commercials, web ads are here to stay. Many websites simply cannot stay alive without generating some sort of revenue. I guarantee that if I had to pay a fee to use most websites (including good ol' Slashdot) then I wouldn't use them. Granted, I dislike pop-up ads, but I don't mind a banner ad/text ad embedded into a web page. (My $0.02 - YMMV - void where prohibited.)
Well, the way I understand it, they want the tape because there MIGHT be a crime, not that there IS a crime, just MIGHT. And, they use some pretty shoddy "We gave them (the PD) money so the car indirectly belongs to us." excuse to try to get the tape from him. I think that's why he's in the position he's in.
It's cool that eMusic offers the service it offers BUT most folks don't buy music unless they hear it on the radio first so unless eMusic has a few major artists it doesn't really matter to the masses.
I say this as a former desktop Linux user (Debian/Mandrake/SuSE). Linux just isn't there yet and never will be as long as geeks don't listen to people like this and take their needs utterly seriously. Not wanting to invest dozens of hours configuring one's computer to do the most basic of desktop tasks shouldn't be a subject of derision. It should be a wake-up call, one of about a hundred thousand wake-up calls that have been completely ignored by the Linux community over the last decade.
Agreed. I have been trying for a few years to get folks to at least consider a Linux distro and the ease of use has been THE ISSUE that kills the project completely, nevermind the inability to buy a software app off the shelf and install it. SIGH!
I have designed a website for a recording studio in exchange for studio time to record an entire album. I'm hoping to get a new tattoo in exchange for doing a site for a local tattoo & piercing place.
Call me paranoid but I don't like the idea at all. When I read the article it said that you'd be able to search any message you ever sent. To hell with that, when I delete a message, I don't want to be able to search it ever again. I suppose Yahoo! *probably* archives all messages and they're never truly deleted but I can't be sure. I love Google but not Gmail. No thank.:)
I think that even though we already know about GPL/BSD, etc, this is still a great article. I for one am grateful that someone has pointed us to this because I do not have time to search for things like this.:)
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050922-5339 .html has been /.ed!
Of course, most of the time I forget to test in IE.
I always forget to test in IE and it's bitten me in the ass a few times, especially since IE doesn't always render PNG files correctly.

We are stuck with Polaris, for now. They changed their name though. http://www.polarislibrary.com/

You beat me to the punch.
What will you do if someone uses your wireless connection to access illegal/illicit materials and the authorities come knocking at your door?
I was setting up a wireless laptop yesterday and immediately found "JPs Bitchin' Broadband" which was secured and "linksys" which was not.
