  1. Outing Alleged Criminals on Journalists Can't Hide News From the Internet · · Score: 1

What about "outing" alleged criminals? Long before a person is convicted of cleared of robbery/rape/murder/etc. charges, their name and picture (from which the rest of their personal information can be easily found) are in the public eye for all to see and judge, whether they are in any way guilty or not. A public record is as good as a criminal one. The local news outlets are the worst offenders. Our local news channels ran with a story about a guy who was accused of molesting his daughter by his ex-wife. For a week, it was one of the top stories and they showed his picture and displayed his name for the entire time they were "reporting" it. After a week, his ex confessed that she was pissed at him for something stupid and she did that to get even. Not one of the TV stations reported that side of the story.

far too many RTFM's for the OSS community to be lecturing Closed Source companies on treating people like they matter. Where do you see that? It's not on my LUG or in the class I help teach. Elitism is entirely a closed source constrution. Non free software is designed from the beginning to keep people helpless and divided, to create haves and have nots. Free software, by design, is inclusive and friendly. Have you ever seen a Vista install fest where enthusiastic volunteers come together and give a configured OS to anyone who wants it? I've seen serious elitism in several online Linux communities that I've visited over the past decade. To say it doesn't exist is just plain wrong.

However, it doesn't work unless you've been consistent since day one. You are an idiot. If your kids respond to your disappointment, then you got lucky. Not all kids respond the same way.

Raising kids can be easy, but I think a majority of parents fail because they cannot evolve beyond what their parents did to them. Bullshit. Raising kids can be, but isn't always easy. And my kid doesn't get treated anywhere close to how I was treated when I was a kid. He's a good kid but sometimes even good kids need a swat on the butt. Did I mention that you're an idiot?

And as I've stated before, as long as they give me the option of which type of content to advertise, it's good. I'd like to opt out of tobacco or alcohol related ads.

Why is it that anytime a company wants to break even or actually make a profit, it is called "greed"? Too many people want something for nothing! I'm surprised that no one complained when I put google ads on my website.

I'll take the cheaper TV (not that my cable rates HAVE EVER dropped) please. I will never buy a pair of Nike(tm) shoes but if their advertising keeps broadcast television "free" then I'm OK with that.

  17. Re:huh? on Study Says $2.3B in Net Radio Royalties by '08 · · Score: 1

I am of the opinion that they are trying to shut down Internet radio in an effort to keep their stranglehold on the market.

Back when Live365.com first started, I was one of the founding broadcasters and I ran a very popular stream called Hair's To The 80s Internet Radio. For the first couple of years (the exact time frame escapes me) everything was free and advertiser supported. Live365 also had a neat feature where you could click on the song title and be taken to their online store to purchase the album the songs was on. Then, Live365 started charging all broadcasters fees to cover royalties and the founding broadcasters got a reduced rate on their fees since they helped grow Live365. The fees for the originals started out very reasonable but quickly escalated to the "too expensive for me" rate. Now, with the rules of Live365, one could not sell advertising in our broadcast so we had to depend upon our listeners to send donations that could only be requested on our email newsletters and website, not in our stream. Well as we all know the "the Internet should be free" mentality prevailed and no one wanted to donate but was quick to "pitch a bitch" when I took the stream down. Too bad, I really enjoyed programming that station.

Provide full quality WAVs or FLAK and I am there. Provide it at a reasonable price and they'll have 25 years worth of pent up music buying desire snatching up everything I always wanted. If they hit 50 cents a song or $5/album people will be stocking up on the full sets of all the artists they ever liked.
Please keep in mind that while WAV or FLAC would be ideal, bandwidth and hosting costs need to be factored into the equation. Speaking as someone who is currently working with musicians in my local music scene, I am trying to find that balance between what the consumer wants and what my company can reasonably afford. There has to be compromise on both sides. :)
