  1. Re:I think on RIAA Sues 261 Major P2P Offenders · · Score: 1

They might not have infringed on copyrights themselves, but by allowing others to download from them, they've opened themselves up to the lawsuit.

Then could someone explain how libraries are exempt from this? I realize they are (for the most part) government entities so they may be afforded special protection (since most government agencies ignore the law anyway), but they are making CDs available for loan (which people could copy) w/o making reasonably sure that borrowers who don't own the CD aren't copying it.

I used to think that used CD stores were the way to go, but I think I'll be investing in a library card soon.

just post a link to RIAA saying that they've changed their stance and they're giving everyone a single free CD. The /. affect alone should kill their server for a while. They'll notice that.

  6. RIAA Honeypot anyone? on RIAA Apologizes for Incorrect Infringement Notice · · Score: 1
Anyone who wants to really screw around w/the RIAA can do so very easily. So long as you've gotta public FTP site, and say, 50-100 MB to play with can create junk files (text, core files). Name them rather blantantly (Usher - NEW SONG.mp3, etc), then just leave them out there for the RIAA to troll. Let the notices come, tell the RIAA to screw off and wait for legal action.

Get enough folks to do this and the RIAA will be so busy chasing ghosts they won't know what to do w/themselves.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least of M$ countersued and asked to prove that every single copy of SQL Server and every Windows box it ran on had a license.

With as rampant as piracy is in Asia, M$ can probably knock the case down to a single count since the only person that has a license over there is Bill Gate's sponsored Sally Struther's hungry child.

  12. Re:Why? on Car Cellphone Bans Driving Bluetooth · · Score: 1

Actually this isn't the reason at all. Our society insists on responding to every little things that comes our way inDUHvidually and must make a special case for it every time instead of just using what's already on the books. You don't need to ban driving with cell phones. You need to enforce the laws that are on the books regarding driving while distracted (which most states have). You're on the phone, reading the paper, putting on your makeup, get yourself to the side of the road 'cause you should be getting ticketed for it. "Hate Crime" legislation is the same way. If you beat the hell or outright kill someone, that's hate in an of itself. Why do we have to make a special case because of the color of someone's skin, religion, what they do w/their junk, etc. Why is a Female Mexican Jewish Lesbian worth more than I am? Why is talking on a cell phone more distracting than putting on mascara while browsing the want adds in the NY Times (registration required) as you change the station from Imus to Howard Stern.
