Hence the reason I said "Only the most serious/violent need apply". You're not going to do this for someone on a 3-5 stretch for fraud. This is something for those with *very* extended sentences.

Freezing someone for life seems contradictory since once their frozen they technically aren't living and at that point it's more like freezing them for eternity which then amounts to a death sentence. Maybe they can be thawed in X years once we've come up with a better rehab program. Lifers aren't expected to be rehabilitated since they won't be re-entering society.

That being said, there are those in for life or on Death Row that have actually done some good for society and they have been rehabed as best possible. Whether it be providing scholarships, training and rehabbing pets, it is possible.

I'm willing to give people a second chance or to allow them to do some good to make some ammends, that doesn't mean letting them out if their offense was so insane that it warrented their long prison stay in the first place.

Some people can't be rehabbed and will never feel sorry for their crimes or their crime was so heinous that merely locking them in a cell for the rest of their life doesn't seem to do justice. While I'm a supporter of the death penalty, I agree with its detractors in that it's not the deterrent that people think it is. Those who will end up being considered for it most likely live their lives in constant fear of death (talking about the drug runners and gang bangers). Serial killers, child molesters, etc are just on a power trip and should be perfect fodder for these types of experiments.

Most likely you'll need a license and insurance in order to operate these things. In fact, mandatory insurance makes even more sense for these things then it does for cars.

But it still doesn't stop people from driving around unlicensed and uninsured now. If these are going to be privately owned and operated, perhaps even in someone's backyard, who's going to make sure the "pilot" has a license and insurance?

I haven't read all responses, but you can bet that homeland security is going to have a cow over these. Granted, they have to worry about Cessna type aircraft now but potentially allowing "sky cars" in every driveway presents a whole new set of worries.

chances are someone's got it as well. In the workplace, iTunes rocks. Everyone has their own songs and shares them for everyone else listening pleasure.

You'd have to be running a P2 or slow P3 with 32MB RAM for this to be over priced @ $100 and that isn't going to do much with today's bloatware anyway. Even with prices dropping the way they are, if the system is enough to run today's bloatware it'll be hard to be overpriced @ $100.

What you have to consider is the usage of the person that's buying this cheaPC (consider that term trademarked :P). The person who's buying this is going to want/need to do the following things:
    • Surf the 'Net/use Email
    • Listen to music
    • Simple word processing
    • Maybe share photos via a digital camera
    • Play timekiller games (i.e. ones that aren't gonna require the latest gfx card).
I don't know the economics/prices of putting together mass produced cheaPC's but I know that systems like this already exist for $200ish, especially if you don't care about primo performance. Most of you (I haven't read all posts) are concerned with mass cost of components, but you stop to consider what a cheaPC will be used for then your parameters to the cost discussion change considerably.

Why not just buy the CD, RIP it, and return it claiming it doesn't work in your CD players (since most folks have computer, portable, stereo, etc). Make sure you make a point about the copy protection when you return it. Keep it in pristine condition.

For the $16-20 that you're spending on the CD, the band is probably seeing $1-2 *at the most*. The rest goes to the store, the record company, and of course, the RIAA. The band must then take their cut and payback the studio for recording costs, advertising agencies, etc.

    Want to support the band?

    1. Go to the show. Bands get a much greater precentage of the box office than from the CD.
    2. Buy their stuff. T-shirts, Hats, Monkey Chow, Toilet Paper, etc. They get a HUGE percentage of the cash from this.
    3. If you have to buy the CD, buy it at the show. It might be the same price as your local store, but chances are the band is getting a bigger cut (no store overhead).

What'd I'd love to see is a band with almost no record sales, with consistantly sold out shows, and people wearing their shit all over the place. If anything will send a signal to the record companies that there's a problem. This might just do it.

Folks will complains that CDs won't get produced under this method. What will happen is that bands will make enough money off their other income (shows, merch) to produce and distribute their own CD, thereby cutting out at least part of the middle-man and breaking away from the RIAA.
