I can use one of my drones to check my roof gutters right now, and the FAA is completely happy with that. I can then move 50 feet to the left and do exactly the same thing to someone else's house for pizza money, and I'm subject to a $10,000 fine.
Actually, no. The FAA position is that if you fly a drone for a 'purpose', then it is no longer a hobby. Want to check out your own gutters to see their condition? Sorry, that is not a hobby flight and is subject to a fine. Now, if you happen to check out your gutters and that of your neighbor while flying, more power to you! The difference is intent...if you plan to do something, they are going to hammer you. If they can't prove that you planned it and was just having fun, then they don't want to risk you running off to your congressman to complain.
You can't find cheap AND simple in the home automation world...do you want cheap or do you want simple?
What you really want to do is look at the base software that will talk to all devices. Preferably something that can talk to several different protocols like Insteon and Z-Wave. This way you can mix and match devices based on price and functionality.
Two software packages come to mind (because I have used both)...MisterHouse and HomeSeer. MisterHouse is cheap (free and open source) and HomeSeer is simple.
Not trying to be mean, but you should have already had a plan in place...this late in the game without a plan means you just have to go with asses and elbows (just get what you can while you can and forget trying to install a plan to do it!)
The good news is you can become an example for other IT people! Everyone should look at their disaster plans and make sure you have accounted/planned for all emergencies that may happen in your area.
Before you turn red in the face, and your blood pressure raises to unsafe levels, please take note of the date of the article.
This is Slashdot...there has not been a true news story on April 1st for over a decade! (and some will claim it is not limited to just April Fools' day!!)
The switch IS the right place. I want to be able to control the light (and fixture) from my phone, but what happens when I have guest in the house? If the control is in the fixture/light, then I must either give the guest access to my automation or turn it on/off for them. When the control is in the switch, I can control it either at the switch or through my phone!
I'm blessed to live in San Antonio Texas where we don't have the deregulation! After watching what Enron did to the Californians, I was really worried when there was talk of deregulating the Texas market...but exemptions were put in place for a couple of markets!
Everybody stop deleting your accounts! I'm trying to delete mine right now but it won't let me...I'm guessing the servers are melting and I want you to stop until I get mine deleted!
I think the real reason for the new rules is to increase the money from fines.
From TFA
* By January 1, 2005, retrofit all airplanes that are required to carry a cockpit and data recorder with a system that is capable of recording the last two hours of audio; and is fitted with a 10 minute independent power source that is located with the device and that automatically engages and provides 10 minutes of operation whenever power to the recorder ceases, either by normal shutdown or by a loss of power to the bus.
* Require all aircraft manufactured after January 1, 2003, that are required to carry a cockpit and data recorder be equipped with two combination cockpit voice and data recording systems. One system should be located as close to the cockpit as practicable and the other as far aft as practicable. Both recording systems should be capable of recording all mandatory data parameters covering the previous 25 hours of operation and all cockpit audio and controller pilot datalink communications for the previous two hours of operation. The system located near the cockpit should be provided with an independent power source that engages automatically and provides 10 minutes of operation whenever normal aircraft power ceases. The aft system should be powered by the bus that provides the maximum reliability for operation without jeopardizing service to essential or emergency loads. The system near the cockpit should be powered by the bus that provides the second highest reliability for operation without jeopardizing service to essential or emergency loads.
If there's an accident during a low traffic time, you whiz by it.
Must be nice where you live. Here, if there is an accident, everybody slows down to take a look because you just might know the person. Never mind the fact this is a city of 1.5M+ people!
These are the only things keeping me from switching all of my home computer over to Linux (Main box - Vista, Web Camera box - Xp , Home Automation box - Just switched to Ubuntu during the Christmas break, Poker Night Laptop - XP but really only needs Java, Wife's laptop - Vista, and Windows Home Server - Yes, I now know I can do all of the same things under Linux, but this was easier at the time)
The Home Automation box (misterhouse) just got switched over...the laptop I use on poker nights is next, followed by the box running the web camera security system (I haven't looked for software, but I'm sure it will be out there:)
I have saved emails since 1998, always under Outlook pst files. I tried Linux 2 years ago, but there was no way to transfer over the emails...as far as I can tell, you still can't!
My wife won't care what OS she is running (I already deleted IE and installed Firefox on her laptop) but she would freak if she lost all of her email.
Truthfully, I don't even care about syncing my phone. But how do I get all the email stored in PST files?
Umm...the first thing I checked was the date of the article...sure enough, it's dated 04.01.07 (look right under the headline). I guess I won't be using my last mod point:)
Try Google...I tossed "thin skulled client" and got back a lot of results. After reading parts of them, I think the following is a very good description: The "thin skulled plaintiff" principle indicates that you must take a person as you find them, even if they are particularly susceptible to a particular harm.
I can't recall any other sport or other kind of show putting up notices like the NFL's
How about the NBA and MLB? I know when I watch the Spurs (basketball) local telecast, the have a lawyer from a local firm read the exact same message, just replacing NBA with NFL.
OK...I don't know what REALLY gets deleted, but he has IMPLIED that the software will delete unrelated files in my home directory. What happens if someone uses a key generator and happens to come up with my key? I've paid for a valid key and still get my (unrelated) files deleted? Automated justice is never a good thing. Do you want to see an armed robot guarding your office? Everyone knows that the robot will only shoot someone when they present an unauthorized badge and you know that you have a valid badge. Do you feel safe walking into work?
Someone who intentionally destroys (or even just threatens to destroy) files unrelated to the software is displaying a very low level of maturity. How do I know that he doesn't have some other nasty surprises installed (or will be installed on a future upgrade) in the software? What happens when he decides that program Y is just a ripoff of his program and installs a routine to destroy program Y from my computer along with other unrelated files?
There is no way I would use ANY program by this developer. If I find out that he works for another software company, then there is no way I would use software from that company!
One 62" in the living room, 2 years old, used 4 - 6 hours a day (more on weekends) and no problems with the bulb. One 44" in my poker room, which has a computer hooked up to it, refurbusihed and a year old. This one is used 2 - 5 hours a day. After a year, the picture on the 44" was getting dim so I replaced the bulb. I think the main reason it went dim is because I kept forgetting to turn the TV off! BTW, since it was DLP, I don't have an image burned into it (try leaving a computer image up for 48 hours on an LCD or plasma!)
Contrary to popular Slashdot believe, the place I'm working is hiring like crazy!
A lot of interesting work (Intelligent Transportation, Space Science, Applied Physics, Automotive Research, Signal Exploitation, etc.)
Salary is very good, benefits are great (full tuition reimbursement, contributes 9% to 401k, none matching...they don't care how much I contribute!)
All you need to do is have at least a 3.5 GPA and convince all the interviewees (I interviewed with 12 people on the first day, another 3 later) that you are intelligent and nice to work with. They figure if you can meet those two requirements, you can quickly learn the skill set needed on projects.
I convert the output from the computer to a TV output feed into a modulator, which feeds back into the video stream in the house. DVD, cable box, and VHS are done the same way. Tune any TV in the house to 88 for the computer, 90 for the DVD, 92 for the Cable box, and 94 for the VHS.

Maybe from the burn-in on my LCD computer monitor?

How 'bout Jar-Jar, a motorcycle, a shark tank, and the words "He didn't make it!"?
How about it won't matter what type of bike you HAD, if you were using a cheap lock on your bike.
Now for this article, it doesn't matter what was the name brand of the cards they HAD, because the cheap-ass lock/security was by passed.
I would point out the spelling error in the subject line, but Im knot spill checqing mi pos ethere
By all means, Mark Riedesel should take them to court for copying his artistic work!
What? Jack V? Couple of articles late?

Something I would really want pointing at my eye! I'm sure it's safe, but can you imagine the marketing problems?
