Or better yet we recognize this as the NON PROBLEM it is and don't tax anyone. Seriously if you live in the middle of no where, pay what costs if you want service. The telco WILL drag T-Carrier out anywhere you want it! Might cost you 1/2 million but they will do it.
Alternatively the universal service fund has already guaranteed you dialup!
There is lot that is great about living in the sticks, no traffic, low taxes, usually cozy interactions with smallish participatory local government, and others but high speed network access is not none of them.
I am sorry organization like the USADA and the NCAA are total unmitigated BS for this reason. What you are basically saying is that the USADA had not in 10 years come up with any evidence better than hear say and questionably reliable testimony, and they get to find him guilty unless he decides to go on playing their games as long they wish to do so. Its totally contrary to our basic concept of the presumption of innocence which I really does not apply to such agencies. Still this is in many ways more like a criminal proceeding than other civil matters and I for one think the presumption of innocence is pretty fundamental to justice in general.
I don't see why they should be allowed to conduct a 10 year persecution, not prosecution, of someone and when that someone finally gets tired of it declare victory. I don't see why they should then be allowed to rewrite history either. The USADA does not want to recognize him as a winner, fine but don't ask me to recognize or respect the judgement of the USADA. Lace IS A WINNER no matter what they want print in their damned books.
Whem there is a glut in the market, stop producing so much to maximize profit
Except that is not what you do in a free economy. You only stop producing whem hit the point you can't sell at a profit, because in a free economy someone else would decide to produce and take your market share if the cost of supply was still lower than the price of demand. If someone talks about cutting supply to maximize profit, they are almost certainly talking about an economy that someone has regulated or restricted others from emtering in some way. That is not a free market. Well outside those incredibly rare cases where someone literally controls the only know source of a mineral or something.
Correlation is not causation and all, but its basically been shown that societies which discriminate based on things like race, gender, and religion, enjoy less economic success than those which don't.
I would speculate this is because it create a barrier that results in something other than the allocation of the people with the most talent and or desire to do $job to that particular job.
The Islamic world wonders why it does not have the influence and power on the world stage the West does and idiocy like this is a big reason why.
Lulzsec is scum, they have zero "freedom fighter" in them.
They are not scum they are mostly just kids. The fact the FBI is after them suggests to me its our Government and Law enforcement that is mostly populated by SCUM. Lets face it on the whole the harm done by LulzSec is probably less than what the other kids are doing spray painting their gang signs on the neighbors fence etc.
There is virtual zero potential for someone to get hurt or killed on the Internet. Where any exists its because of the victim's or victim's service provider's own gross negligence. I'd rather have bored teenagers defacing web sites and publishing CC numbers from people who ought to have know better than defacing tangible property any day.
Law enforcement should pay about as much attention to to these matters as any other petty crime and no more, they should be focused violent crime and serious property crimes that can't be undone with a restore from tape.
One or more of the following is true: 1. National level law enforcement is primarily about something other than law enforcement.
2. National level law enforcement has a completely screwed up set of priorities
3. National level law enforcement has to many resources for its proper scope
My gripe with them and folks like them is they don't learn. If they were part of righteous cause or something I could understand but their publishing a blog about Apple products for crying out loud.
After the whole missing iPhone incident and now a string of others you'd think they'd have the sense to say "whew barely got out of that scrape" and move on. Lots of parties are not really happy with the way things shook out. Apple, certainly isn't, local law enforcement likely not, and probably others. Apple controls more dollars than most nation states and as we all know law enforcement has a huge tool box with which to harass folks they are not found of. Even if you are on each others enemies list, you really should want to stay off their radar.
Not saying Gizmodo needs to get out of Dodge or anything like that but they really really should avoid doing things like publishing this that only serve to rub salt in the wounds of the 800lb gorilla.
Its not as if this is a story that needed to be brought to light. Its no secret that low wage retail employees tend to engage in this type of behavior. The only way you could not know if you have never so much as spoken to any who has ever worked retail at any point in their lives!
Come one DEA, can't just say someone's data center was used in drug trafficking and just confiscate whatever they need and boom problem solved? I mean seams to cover the motor pool.
The thing is we ought to want to set a precedent of future incidents. Yes its going to once and while probably let someone who really is a criminal by some sane definition escape justice but that isn't the issue. Your typical criminal will never have the option open to them, even if on occasion some two-bit nation 'rescues' one for a PR coup. The rest of the world will understand that such and such is getting away with it not because (s)he has out run the long arm of the law but because "We the people" are acting on principle.
The issue our government is more concerned with their short term vendetta against Assange for embarrassing them than it is in keeping the moral high ground. There will come a time again when we have some Chinese, South American, or African would be political prisoner as a guest of one of our embassies. When we don't want to give them up because we think their cause is just and aligned with our long term geo-political interested, this "statement" by the State Department is going to make it much harder to sell the rest of the world on the idea that we are not the bad actors.
Sadly the fact is we DO need to make that sale today! There was a time when we did not, when whatever America did was just assumed to be just and verdant by the rest of the first and most of the third world. Its a shame we have demonstrated so many moral failings, that it isnt the case any more. If we want to have our position as world leaders back, we need to get our act together.
I am slamming the Obama administration on this one because its worse an opportunity squandered! We did not have to make any statement, we did not need to publicly inject ourselves into this even if we have pulled some of the damn strings. Its typical of his administration. Its never about doing the right thing, its always about securing power for them and their pals. Other statements like "never let a good crisis go to waste" speak volumes about the kind of man Obama and the folks around him are.
What the hell is this? A contest of "who's pissing better/stronger on the people in this world" or what?
No its not, its keeping perspective. Having an appreciation for the reality of the situation rather than just an emotional reaction to it, lets us have a shot at addressing the problem. The alternative is we sit fret about how bad things are, and nothing more. That may be all that we end up doing anyway but at least at least a little objectivity gives a chance. When was the last time you solved a problem (well) without defining it?
Most of what you say is true, and it is shameful what our nation has become but I take issue with two statements.
has become more oppresive and arbitrary than what you would have experienced in the Soviet Union during the cold war years
I find this doubtful at best, and difficult to prove. Having a look at the now much more open Russian the recent head lines coming out of there, it does not seem to be much different from the way things are here currently. They have their Kassprovs and Pussy Riots, we have our Julian Assanges. Both nations are using a "make it up as we go along" system of law, that gets down right tyrannical if you do anything politically incorrect. Still from the Russian immigrants I know, its widely believed Russia is a more tolerant place than during the Soviet era; even if things are headed in the wrong direction at the moment.
US doesn't even recognize the International Court of Justice.
This is not something I would take issue with. If there is an organization in the world more openly corrupt, ripe with cronyism, likely to give credibility to the most disgusting ideas and individuals on the planet its the UN. Personally I am most ashamed we remain a part of it at all. I think if our nation was principled we'd leave the UN. The last thing we should do, as bad as government has become is cede sovereignty to that body.
The United States is not a party to the 1954 OAS Convention on Diplomatic Asylum and does not recognize the concept of diplomatic asylum as a matter of international law"
Once again the Obama administration shames us with its foreign policy. Let hope the Chinese don't remember this statement next time one of their dissidents shows up at our Embassy.
Ecuador - is not a symbol of freedom. Ecuador and its sphere of political influence just want to make some G8 nations look weak in foolish in hopes of boosting their own relevance or tipping power toward other big players they *think* might make better allies.
The USA and the UK movers and shakers won't stand for this. They *will* get Assange eventually, in fact by doing this little stunt with Ecuador, he may well have escalated his case to where he is put into one of these special classes of criminals that really does get disappeared to places like Git-Mo or those CIA blackout locations. You see he offended them and they sought to put him away for a little while and otherwise screw up his life with some nuisance prosecution. To remind him and everyone else its not a good idea to step out of line. The jig up, he has been to slippery up til now, but they CANT let him get away with it , less others might try similar shenanigans and that probably is not good for someone's bottom line.
While I don't think for a second Ecuador has anything but self serving motives, and I don't think they have any high minded ideas about freedom and human rights, I do hope Assange is successful at this point.
I am sad for my country. This is supposed to be the land of free and home of the brave. We are not supposed to need dark rooms and secret proceedings. We are supposed be able to operate within the bounds of our laws, and if we don't like the outcome we are supposed to then have a public discussion and update them via the legislature. We don't use secret executive orders, we are supposed be able to stand on our principles. I support some level of military, I don't think we need to be the worlds super cops but I want us to be able to defend ourselves. With that said I also think if our government is doing anything it can't be open about its not something we ought to be doing at all. If we can't simply own up whats in some diplomatic cables, and if it really does threaten our national security in a meaningful way when they leak, they we are not strong, brave, or free, what we are is weak, cowardly, and enslaved. Stop being weak my fellow Americans! As a nation we need make sure whatever we do its something we can say in public, "yea that was us, it was right, and we are proud of it" either that don't do it.
1Ghz CPU and 128 megs of ram is really quite a bit of computer power, lets get some perspective people. Just a little over a decade ago that would have described the computer in the steel case under your desk!
These things also support 3rd party apps and browse the web. The line between feature phone and smart phone is pretty blurred here if you ask me. Feature phone used to mean its got a camera, can do MMS, and a calendar app, possibly pac-man or brick out to play with. These are lots more than. I don't think its unfair to market them as smart phones, just not top shelf. Frankly if these are not smart phones Blackberry's aint either. The only way they are not smart phones is you think being a smart phone means running Droid or iOS.
Another reason for mass executive exodus is so they CAN have more opportunities in the future. Its good not to be there at the end game. These guys want to go on to be C?Os or board members elsewhere, to do that they need to be able to maintain the fiction things were fine at Facebook when they left. The don't want to be on the list of people who ran it into the ground.
Naturally most normal people can see thru this, but star-y eye'd near do wells, in their desperate greed will toss tons of money at these people in hopes of getting their own Zukerburg like pay out. Of course it won't work out but that has never stopped anyone on either side of the equation.
Sell you shares and securing the cash does not require you to leave your job. No reason not cash out AND keep working there if you are being well compensated and enjoy your job. The issue is probably more these folks don't need the money, and at least in my experiences its usually not fun working for a company with major problems, let alone those of Facebook.
I think you parent poster's idea was the female cops would sorta serve as bait. I don't think he was imply that male officers would sit by and do nothing about a sexual assault whitenessed by the officer or reported to him.
Female officers would like attract the same inappropriate actions the female attendees and presenters do, the difference is they would be very likely ready and able to do something about then and there.
I won't be surprised if it's true - since most animals don't spend hours fighting or running.
Ah be we are not most animals.
Humans big advantage in hunting is/was the ability to run down most prey, we (if in good shape) are not the fastest but we can keep up the chase longer than almost any prey we would want. Our bodies are somewhat uniquely efficient at cooling. Groups of prehistoric hunters would literally chase critters like elk until then collapsed from exhaustion. Supposedly a human in absolutely ideal physical condition can out run a horse for distance greater than ~26mi.
Point is we are actually designed for sustained high, though not peak obviously, output.
Ubuntu is the Windows of the Linux world, with Canonical being equivalent to Microsoft.
The only difference is Windows for all its warts, flaws, and promised features never delivered, is actually a usable platform. Where as Ubuntu is just a broken version of an otherwise useful Debian.
build a box out of 2x4s and Drywall scraps form homedepot. Make it 5 sheets thick and it'll withstand any housefire you could possibly have
I find that statement suspect. I am not saying you are wrong but extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
I have seen some pretty nasty house fires, the kind were the fire department sprays water on the neighbors houses to keep them from catching rather than try to do anything about the one that is actually burning. With all the modern synthetic materials in furniture, carpeting, and other flooring a house fire can hit 600 degrees and stay that way for hours.
If five sheets of dry wall (.5" or.75" ?) was sufficient to insulate a hard disk such that it will useable later, in what amounts to a 600 degree oven for an extended period; I suspect all our outside walls would be five layers thick with the stuff. Cheap as dry wall is the energy costs in terms of heating and cooling would be recouped in a few years if it were that good.
systemd is the biggest POS ever. Its taking something that was not broken and worked well only to replace it with something complex that works badly. Any distro that uses it is not worth running
This will be the end of GNOME in most other distros. RH and Deb will probably figure out a way to make it work but others will drop it.
Why? Because the GNOME devs are going to start tightly coupling the desktop to things like init process and a file system layout. It will break all distro specific tools, and traditions and rather then write a bazillion patches distributors will simple stop packaging it.

When the f**k with Sony though I can't help but cheer them on.
Countrie might go to war on that.
