I don't know how you document things but I generally draw some basic diagrams so I know where everything can be found and where the physical cables go, that does not change very often, and is easy to keep up to date. ACLs and things like QOS and priority rules, IP translations etc change all the time. I certainly make notes about anything exotic but I don't document everything. What I did do is put all config file(s) in CVS everytime I make changes, for some switch is some office some place that is the documentation.
I think this is a perfectly adequate practice in lots of environments.
I used to live in PA. About they only place you will find a black population of any meaningful numbers are Pittsburg, Philly, and a few in Harrisburg. Those are cities, there are more people, closer together and more law enforcement. There are far more oppertunitys to both commit and be caught commiting a crime. So if you are going to take state wide prision statistics and then try and make conclusions about race without looking at population statistics you are producing nothing but bullshit.
Now if you collected some data about the rate imprisonment by race for say a neighboorhood within a city you might be able to get something useful out.
Remember a few years ago when everyone swore up and down that red cars got the most speeding tickets . Then someone figured out that after you adjusted for the proportionality of red cars to other colors there was no difference at all? This is could very well be the same situation. The crime + detection of crime is disproportionally happening in the big metro areas, which have disproportionate black populations.
Yes, I am sure they do have people doing capacity planning. I am sure that time to market became a consideration so they did not want sit a stack a warchest of them in their warehouse, not to mention the risk had they not been big sellars, they know like all products in the electronics market demand will taper off no matter what they do in the end. Which would mean that not building out a lot more manufacturing facility might be wise, even if it means you can't sell as many units, because what will you do with it after the popularity fades?
They are selling the units they can produce where the currency offers them the best excahnge rate so they take the most profit. Why they don't raise prices since the market will obviously bare it, I don't know, Good Will?
Oh that is total bullshit. The only reason Obama is keeping it secret is so that if he makes any political gaffs on the trip he can cover them up before they become news. McCain knows Obama is in no real danger. He is not going to go anywhere near where any fighting is happening. These trips are just political stunts. If will be like Mrs. Clinton's little trip to the Balkins. Children reading pomes will morph into running firefights. All candidates do this. McCain being a career politicians knows this better then anybody.
Obama is no more or less likely to be killed on his Iraq trip then giving a speech here in the States.
I think you are forgetting something important about our legal system. Punishment is not about retribution or its not supposed to be any way. Its to rehabilitate or to incapacitate the offender. I agree with your position where the point is to incapacitate. There are certain types of criminals like sex offenders for instance that we know usually can't be rehabilitated, there are people like murderers that are so dangerous we can't take the chance letting lose. Finally there are repeate offenders who demonstrait they will not change their behavior. In all of those cases you are right there should be a simple lookup table.
A sentence should come down to well you were convicted of X for the Yth time that will 10 years and $20,000 of your assets.
In cases like DUI maybe somebody really was just not thinking or was unable to grasp the posibile consequences of their actions. A FIRST TIME offender might be a fine candidate for rehabilitation. They need to be punished, and it has to hurt. How much it needs to hurt though is variable. If somebody is remorseful( yes it can be hard to tell ) then it may be that they learned the lesson and will never make that mistake again. Nobody has anything to gain by completely destroying their lives. It won't help the victim any that is for sure.
When you have someone like in this case though, its another story. This guy hurt people DUI and then not long after is doing the same bad behavior drinking to excess around others. He does not have remorse he will hurt someone again if some external force is not used to inflict pain on him since his conscience is apparently not doing it. He needs the book thrown at him. He needs to be made to suffer and greatly so he learns not but others in danger so he can party. This is why we need some flexibility in sentencing.
Yes it is, and this wonderful utopian society we are constructing for ourselves is great. Nobody is afflicted with any of that nasty personal responsibility for anything they unless it manages to run afowl of those last few vestiges of silly old sensibilites we have not yet shacken off.
The best part is why have Facebook and MySpace so even those of us without the brainpower to use even the simplest of markup can easily show off for the entire world what kinda of asshats we can be when we really try.
We might not quite be able to get away with running some people down while drunk driving and then parting a few days later like nothing happen but I am confident we will get there, given trends. Somebody somewhere will find a way to make it forgiviable or at least excuseable. That seems to be where all our famous American enginuity is being placed these days. Why I can see future where we are free to rape each other and fling poo, just over the horizon... Dream with me people...
Excuse me but if you are connecting to yourself they you could just say write down or maybe memorize the sha or md5 finger prints of your cert and be completly certain. I have mine written on a card in my wallet. I can always click the view certificate button when I get the browser warning about the cert not being verifiable and verify myself you could as well. I also give my friends and coworkers a copy of my cert out of band so they can install it, or just look at the finger print if they want to use our little shared board from some random box someplace.
Again its 100% certain to be safe, there is no risk I physically handed it to them. Ok there may be some risk but it would be less then the risk with anything any CA ever provided. For truely private use SSL as it exists today really does work well.
I have a Ti99/4a and I can affirm the GP is correct and you are correct. The early ones where build like tanks, the later ones get cheaper and cheaper as Ti tried very hard to hold their price point and still extract some profit from the thing.
I have an 800mhz Slot A Athlon from 1999 at home as my personal desktop. Other then the occasional video playback issues a new PC is not going to do a thing for me. I run Slackware 10.2
XML still is a buzword. While there are all sorts of applications that could make use of XML for easy interoperability and such I mostly see it being used for config files and single application data stores that could be handled better in a flat format.
The other place it gets useds is as crude method of database replication by developers who should have talked to a DBA before writing their applicaion. They would have learned their was proably no need to do their own sycronization, no matter how quick and easy their uberXML library made it.
XML is used everywhere because people have come to expect that, the result is its not used hardly at all but Misused basically all the time. I think the XML add we see here on slashdot all the time with the race car and tractor is exactly right. XML is exactly like a race car where its most often used. Its an extreamly resource intensive grossly impractacal device that there because people like it. The tractor ( the RDBMS ) is an indespenible an proven farm implement that has a role in almost every meaningful application. Its not sexy and noone get to excited about it but it offers real value.
I am not saying XML is worthless its not. There are good applications for XML where flexibility and interoperability are paramont and volume is reasonable.
People keep using it though for: Bulk transaction processing (WHY?????) Application config files that would NEVER need to be read by anything else Other single instance data files Documents that will be two complex for human readability anyway, and also not likely interoperable
Because it turns Senate races into popularity contests. I would rather be represented by someone who has a deep understanding of issues my state faces then someone who can when a general election. By and large these are not the same individuals. The other effect it has is state legislators often get a pass. People pay almost no attention to those elections, which is sad really because more often then not those people have a more immediate impact on our lives.
We already have a "lower house" The House elected by the people directly. We don't need two the framers did not design our government with two. They also gave the purse strings for that very reason, so the electorate could have ultimate control over the financials.
Senators should be elected by state representatives who being their jobs and all could take the time to properly study their positions, record, experience, and actually meet them face to face. Right now who gets to be your Senator comes down to who has more money, either of their own or who can get more contributions by whoring out to some mega corp. Its allot easier to buy one Senator by writing a big check then 100s of state legislators you would need to to ensure you Senator gets elected. It would also make people pay some attention to their local elections if for no other reason then to be sure the people they are electing to State government will select the type of people they want to represent them in the Senate.
Except that most of the big automakers do sell engines, whole and parts like just the bottom end. Other botique car companies buy them and put them in their own bodies. They don't generally make a secret of where the powerplant came from either.
So your plan is to fire a container from the earths service on a trajectory that will pass close enough for the ISS, traveling at thousands of miles per hour releative to earth and this object you tossed up there, can catch it with a big hook?
You don't think that there might be a little problem with that like, um inertia on the ISS and the canister ripping the ISS apart?
Face it if the canister is of any usefull size its going to have enough mass that recovering it on the ISS will require it to have a reasonably similar velocity to the ISS, Like the poster above stated at that point with no friction or drag in space you might just as well let it ride all the way to the moon by itself.
I am not daming them at all. I am simply stateing the trend the past few months has been to go for the quick cash. I think that has a great deal to do with all the uncertainty right now.
I also think your wrong. Yahoo is an established internet company with a wide range of services. They are number two in search and not likely to be pushed out of that position by anyone else out there right now. If you look at Yahoo historically before all the Microsoft Hubub started you'd see their stock prices tracks the index by and large. Yahoo is not just a search company they are a media company. I think there is a long term slow growth value play in Yahoo is Microsoft is run off.
This is about as hostile now as these types of deals get. Microsoft won't make an offer Yahoo's current board will accept so, they are openly asking shareholders to vote the current board out so they can replace it with one lead by Carl Icahn.
Investors are always looking at the short term these days so they will probably do it, which is dumb. I mean really, Microsoft is basically saying "Help us replace your board of directors with one sympathetic to us, oh and hey no worries we still make a purchase offer in your best interests."
I know one thing if I had any plans to hold Yahoo stock for past next few months I'd be voteing to keep the current board. I would probably be out numbered though by the guys who just want to keep the stock long enough that it looks like a deal will happen and the price runs up so they can then dump it before the specifics of the deal which would no doubt be favorable to Microsoft are revealed. With that in mind like many little investors I will probably have to jump on the bandwagon and get while the gettins good if the board is voted out. Yahoo its been nice knowing you but Wall Steet is going to sell you out for a quick cash grab.
That is the most insane thing I have ever read. Its a fact that without oil revenue the middle is by and large a dust bowl. There is some niche hight dollar crops that can be grown, food agriculture is hardly possible above the subsistence level. The big oil produces in the mideast region import between 25 and 100 percent of their food needs. Those economies don't stand a chance without oil revenue.
This is why the better run of those nations are essentially using the money they have now from oil to transform their entire nations into what amount to large investment banks. If it was not for the vast and continued transfer of wealth from the United States to the region it would be in the same state of development it was 60 years ago. Even that direct transfer was not enough to build the mideast economy as it exists to day. Our substantial military presence has been a requirement to keep stability in the region. We have been there in large enough numbers to prevent little turf wars and keep sanity and stability for 50 years. That has been a huge expense even before we hotted things up in Iraq this time arround. In the interest of fairness this peace keeping has been good for us as well, its assured as a resonably stable flow of oil we thought our economy needed. The truth is that the Unitied States military has effectively provided a subsidy for oil for our own nation and the entire world.
The leaders ( OPEC ) have know this, which is why oil has been so cheap for so long. They needed us there at least at arms length. They have kept the prices low enough that we would keep buying it in large quantity and not look for better alternatives. Its getting so expensive now because two things have changed. China has risen and could now provide a market for almost their entire production and fill our void in peace keeping if we left. The other thing being their own reseves are becoming harder to reach so they need to push prices up to keep the revenue coming.
Again the better run states over there are slow extricating themselves from the oil biz and investing around the world. The rest of the middle east is destine for collaps pure and simple. There is virtually no way around it. It will be just like poorer regions of Africa.
As to our economic troubles I think it really does come down to trade deficent of which about 30% of is probably oil. All this credit curch business is a response to inflationary pressures. People were paying to much for realestate, with two many dollars that they thought were worth more then they are. This has inturn rippled throug the banking industry. I still think the dollar is way over valued; this fact will come to a head if the government is forced to either bailout reddy mac fannie mae or extend them a large line of credit. It will destroy the governments own credit rating. We can already see T-bills discount rates falling just in anticipation of it. If this goes forward the value of the dollar will drop like a stone. I know everyone is saying "to big to fail" but I think it might be in the best overall economic interest to let one of them fail. In our short sitedness we have incurred a vast anual expense on foreign oil that has gutted our own nation and build the middle east.
so I'd be more than happy if the USA got the fuck out of there.
So in short I agree with you, I think to save our own nation that is probablly a requirement. Don't think though that we will be doing anything to stabilize them though. We will infact be plunging vast areas of the region into abject poverty and war, just like large parts of Africa. I say better them the us, but I would also say cut the smug crap and lets not feel to good about it. We will be destroying many lives.
Its been a long time since I have had any chemistry so I might be compleetly wrong but I still see some trouble here. I think that any synthesis you might to get from C6H12O6 to C5H12 + CO2 + 2O2 is likely to be endothermic. You are going to need input engery, which you probably are going to get by burning either some of the cellulose directly or burning some of your product.
I would expect that to reduce the yeild substantially. As I stated before I am no chemist, its been a long time and it was never my best subject. I might be completly wrong. It seems to me the losses in the coversion proccess with all these lets make your favorite hydrocarbon from something else schemes later get overlooked.
See I think the Windows 3.11 with the Norton Desktop was one of the best UIs of all time. Most things were allways accessable at the top of the sceen. Your desktop was for running but iconifed applications so you could actually find a minimizes app by site if you happen to have more then a few running, no of this ever shrinking task bar crap. ( I actally had to write my own app for manageing minimized windows on XP becase the start bar is that usless if you have lots of stuff going ) NDW's drive icons were handy even if the concept was borrowed from MacOS. Group windows with different view were GREAT! Sometimes you had a lot of little related apps that you closed and open often in a work flow, use the icon box view for that window and it would be small enough you could keep it open but out of the way. Lots of stuff in a group, use the list view (similar to tare off pannel menues in Gnome / XFCE today ). Other stuff use the traditional windows icon view. It was way ahead of its time. Oh and you also had a powerful macro language batchruner/scriptmaker that was well integrated with the desktop, the possiblities were limitless and it was way easier in most cases then anything you can do with cscript/wscript today.
Its a shame it wont run well on modern Windows or I'd still be using it. On Linux I have settled on XFCE. Its gtk+ which I like as most of the applications I use are gtk based. KDE is nice but its not worth having to deal with a seccond took kit for. Gnome is to slow and its file manager sucks.
Its a good point about the bluffing. When I left may last position at ( large unnamed F500 corporation ). I was asked to help interview contractors who would serve as my temporary replacements. It was a data whse project. I can't tell you the number of resumes I got that boasted all kinds of DBA experience that had no DBA skills what so ever.
The first interview I stated out. "I don't want to insult you but please tell me some of the first things you would look at if an equijoin seemed to be taking longer then it should. After about three interviews I droped the "I don't want to insult you" part.
Anything is better then nothing, even if you don't use SSL its still better. Rather the settup a fake package server ( easy ) and dupe you into using it ( probably easy ), the attacker now must compromise your DNS ( harder ) or dupe you into useing two of his fake package servers ( harder ).
The most invoative one I saw slip by my filter recently was:
Increase the effectiveness of your copulation organ
I found this troubling in that the only word I could safely blacklist on our corporate mail filters is probably
copulation
I can't imagine anyone except maybe the HR department needing to send work related message with that word in the subject, and even then I can't imagine it would be hit our public MX. If copulation could be eliminated then blocking a spam like this will only be possible via the statistical analysis of the entire message; sure this entire specific subject might be filterable but not the individual words. Unless something is a miss in the headers its going to get by.
It made me wonder if the doom and gloom folks might be correct in that SPAM will make traditional mail realy useless. Sadly SPF and related methods are not an option as we just can't count on our customers to implement it and risk not being about to exchange mail with them. Sure if a problem is discovered whitelists can be used but by then you may have lost an account.
The other interesting thing is that would anyone educated enough to have the vocabulary to required understand that subject be ignorant enough to respond? I know the economics of SPAM are such that even if 1 in a million people bite, its worth it but as that first number approches 0 its gotta stop being worth while somewhere.
He is not selling it no, but he is licensing it thousands of times a day maybe more. It just so happens that he is not keeping very close track of who he licenses it to and is granting the licenses the license to relicense it as much as they like with certain restrictions.
There is a reasonable way for you a legally acquire a Linux license. Download the tarball and follow the instructions in the included license file.
Where as it will now not be possible to get a legal WFW3.11 license; so the situation is very different. Since Microsoft will no longer be licensing it, they should be obligated to turn it over to the public as they can no longer claim to use the limited monopoly on the work they were granted.
Wow a democrat seeking to not only restrict the first amendment rights of individuals but congress itself. Wow that sounds democratic to me.
What this really comes down to is the Pelosi is a terrible leader and can't get party unity voluntarily the way the Republican leadership does, so she is going the way of the totalitarian dictators. Pretty sad especially with all the morons out there that think its Bush and the Republicans that are the treat to freedom. Both parties are evil but the democratic party is much much more dangerous.

As long as you have a plan to stop the barbarions from dyeing it yellow, you have my full support.
NPR has made it work, for the most part. Once in a great while though they have to do a little honest reporting just keep people on their toes.
