You mean people were copying that piece of junk?;)
Lawsuit happy companies just need this kind of public attention so people can stop giving them $$. I won't buy it for sure now. I still won't buy gateway computers after they sued that guy who had owned gateway.com for years before they started business. I just don't like the companies that pick on the little guys for fun & profit.
Nods and if every Tom, Dick and Harry sued them you either a) wouldn't get paid because they owe more than the national deficit or b) insurance companies would have to fork it out & guess who pays for that? Jail is definitely the better solution. People are too lawsuit happy anyway.
I haven't read it today but I did read the whole thing a few days ago. 1) It doesn't use the word "bulk" but it does specify numbers. I believe it was around 250. 2) All laws making something a crime have limitations. Even littering. The limit was pretty high and enough to make Joe Blow in his basement think twice. 3) Those types of emails aren't the problem. I've never received any of them. They're also legitimate companies. They won't send 50 million emails/day with false headers trying to sell pron or pills.
I have to wonder if some spammers are already backing off in anticipation of this or if hotmail did something about spam. I went from about 200/day to about 4/day as of about 3 days ago. I thought my account was messed up and had to email myself to see if it was working.
Wouldn't it be great if that was a preview of things to come if this bill works? Yeah it's not exactly what we wanted but it does restrict them quite a bit and opens them up for legal repercussions for spam-blasting pron to teenagers. Things won't be as easy as harvesting addresses & blasting users with crap. I personally like it. If they don't have working unsubscribe mechanisms, forge headers, relay off of unsuspecting users, etc they can be prosecuted.
It's better than satellite. You get automatically shut down for 4 hours if you surpass the 420 meg/4 hours rule. It makes downloading Linux iso images impossible unless you use leech ftp or something like that to limit speed to 12K. It took me 3 days to download Redhat 9.
Yep. I was even cursed out by the security admin because supposedly no person should need a 24/7 connection. It took 3 days to get a real person to talk to me and all 3 days I was shut off. They refused to reimburse me for the 3 days so I found another ISP. Apparently, according to him, you shouldn't need to check email every 20 mins when you're looking for a job & corresponding with employers. I also wasn't supposed to play games for more than an hour as well. Great service there...cuss out the customer & threaten to cut you off & ban you for explaining why you were on so much.
Well the cold hard truth is that people in charge, whether its CEO's or politicians, never ask the people who know how something should be done. Pride gets in the way when you're "above" others and you don't think of them as more than peons. The larger the corporation or organization gets the more true this becomes.
For example, on a particular job I was asked to give 3 solutions for a communications project. One involved using our old analog equipment to save $$ and the other 2 were digital solutions of different costs/reliability. By the time it got through the V.P. it had been cut & pasted together into one solution involving analog/digital both in 2 different systems. All that explaining on the fact that they could not be plugged into the same systems was viewed as incorrect since they both plugged inot the same slot type.
So given that example the most likely thing to happen will be a "committee" will be appointed consisting of not one techie on it to do the research. They'll ask people who know but its doubtable they'll even understand what they're being told.
I specialize in security & could use a job if one of these companies is reading this;)
But seriously though, one of the very first cuts made when the economy started taking a dive was network/security admins. Now they try to fill the gap with job postings for Network admin/security admin/systems admin/programmer/mail admin/janitor for $5/hr.
CNN had a story the other day where they confirmed AOL was among the companies sending jobs overseas. I'm sure this is just to make room in their budget to open up their offices overseas for cheaper labor. It's not like they shouldn't already making more $$ than any other ISP with their prices.
Right now they can spam all they want using forged headers. This bill forces them to use real addresses, real IP addresses, not relay, have operational opt-outs, not forge headers, not keep using different domain names (company name change basically), and lots of other things. It also states it will not override current state laws.
If 'legitimate' businesses don't comply it would be interesting to see some huge company make the news when they max out the $1,000,000 fine & go to jail. That kind of publicity should scare many "legitimate" spammers into submission.
The comment about not being able to sue was inaccurate as well. If damages were incurred you can seek damages from the spammer.
The majority of spam I get right now comes from within the US. If it so much as reduces my daily spam by 20% I'll be thrilled.
Democrats had a "try". Ever heard of a guy named Clinton? He led 8 of the most prosperous years this country has ever seen. So successful, in fact, that his vice president was voted for by a majority of the population.
....On the prosperity handed to him by the previous administration. He immediately started sending jobs overseas & signing "trade agreements" that only involved the "trade" of our cash for their products but not vice versa. We are now seeing absolutely undeniable repercussions of that. It takes years to have visible repercussions on economic policies just like it would take years for you saving $100/month to be a noticable amount.
Also, you imply Bush didn't get the popular vote. Independant recounts showed it was millions of votes in favor of Bush.
Interesting you only list Republican presidents. And FYI, Clinton was f*ed up by not doing anything about his intelligence handed to him about Bin Laden. He was gutless and I applaud Bush to no end for using what he had vs Clinton using what he had on Monica Lewinsky. No president since WW2 has had the balls to do what he has done. Every major issue has people who are pro and con but I guarantee you the con's ALWAYS speak out louder than the pro's. Too bad the US is so brainwashed by media to believe whatever they are told. They were never told by the media about all the wrongdoings of Clinton that we are going thru the repercussions of now. I'm jobless because of the jerk. Some guy in India has my job now and I lost my home & family.
No, what he is implying is that I'm a "prick" for saying it shouldn't be legal to sue for discrimination because a Protestant applied for the Pope position & didn't get the job based on religious discrimination. He didnt' read the articles.
You sound just like an anonymous coward...oh wait you are! Did you even read what I typed? Did I say Buddhism had anything to do with science? I said in a CHRISTIAN school (not buddhist), a Buddhist teacher would be teaching (and praying since it's a religious school) with the children who have paid tuition towards a school that is based on a certain denomination. It was an example. In your own words....you prick. Next time READ. You didn't even have time to read the linked articles to reply.
Did you even read these articles? (the moderator who modded it up too) 1) ACLU Hails Plans to Sign Religious Freedom (dated Sept 22, 2000)- They didn't...it's been over 3 yrs. 2) Churches becoming Incororporated in one state? This is over a year old and has nothing to do with freedom of religion. The constitution guarantees nothing about business practices of a non-profit organization. 3) I agree with this one. 4) "protects against discrimination or misuse of government funds by religious organizations." Protects against misuse of funds? Sounds good to me. 5) I read this bill 4 times & don't see one instance of what they claim in this article. "with respect to the employment of individuals of a particular religion to perform work connected with the carrying on by such corporation, association, educational institution, or society of its activities." - sounds like if you're atheist, don't bother applying for a job at a Catholic school to me. It sounds very fair too. Religion oriented jobs depend on people of that faith as much as astronomers need to know astronomy. If either are not followed, chaos ensues in the workplace. If I was in a Christian school I would not want an atheist teacher or a Buddhist science teacher.
That is such a crock of !$#@!@#$. 99% of what Bush is blamed for Clinton did. Clinton should be in prison after all that has come up that he did. Clinton is even the blame for the 9/11 attacks. He had the intelligence, he had Bin Laden where all he had to do was say yes/no to take him out & he said no. Bush does something about it and everyone thinks he's a jerk for it. That's what being born free does for you. You have no damn clue what it means to live otherwise. I bet you didn't even know that Clinton signed over control of our military to United Nations. He also supported & signed the bills that sent all these millions of jobs overseas.
I'm right wing and I find FoxNews offensive, one sided, yellow-journalistic, terd-wipes. Any station that can hire Geraldo and use him for news while he quotes & interviews editors from The National Enquiror...well...you draw your own conclusions. Left wing == tree-hugger who don't know what kind of tree they're hugging. Most of them interviewed think food comes from the supermarket or farmers need laws to tell them how to maintain their land (even tho they did a damn good job since the 1500's).
I'm not sure I see the point to your post. I'm right wing...I'm offended by the left wing extremism of that station and the pure bias on each & every one of their stories.
If you think about it, the only way to "abolish war" is peace through superiority. Nobody will directly confront an obviously superior opponent. That's why terrorist nations have to do all this sneaking around. You can't just come on tv & announce everyone must play nice because it's a new law. Getting into another coldwar? The cold war was a race for technology. You're saying we shouldn't stay ahead of the curve when the effect of us not staying ahead would lead to that very thing. I'm not even going to comment on things like laser weapons and other new technologies aimed at being used to control us Americans...that's just silly. Do you really think they're making new million dollar laser weapons to control you? I would be just as responsive to a knife held to me as I would a laser weapon. Actually...I'd probably laugh at the laser weapon if he said "freeze, or I'll vaporize you with my laser beam.".
What about person #1 of the n/20 who mods it as flame-bait and the other 19 have filters on that doesn't even let them see the comment to mod? Then you're at the mercy of person #1. There is no majority when there is only 1.
*snicker* that's funny ;)

I'm not sure how DNS servers several hops away can be faster than the ones just inside the ISP unless they just have crappy servers.

Or if you're old as me you'll remember MUFOnet on the old BBS's. Heh...ufo sighting stories shared via dialup.
