I've got an Archos Jukebox Studio 20 sitting beside me, I've had it since it first came out (was about to buy a mini disk player but saw it on a shelf and just had to get one).
It's got marks all over it because of the rough way I've handled it over the years, it's still going.
As for it making a loud whine when the hard drive spins up, can't say I have that problem.
I have had the odd screen problem, turning it off and back on again seems to fix it.
You have bass and treble settings, which is fine as far as I care.
The sound quality is also fantasic. I've compared it to my girlfriends iPod (same headphones used, Koss ones) and I have to say that I actually think the Archos sounds better, especially the quality of the bass!! I couldn't believe it myself.
I'm just waiting for it to break so I can get a new generation mp3 player!
If only they had cheap 20Gb Compact Flash cards, then I'd get a pda and use that for movies, but if this Archos AV500 is the size of a PDA... Hmmm. Shame it'll be too expensive.
The whole point of having a digital camera in a phone is because it can fit in to such a tiny space. It's bascially there for capturing the surprise moment.
I can only imagine how huge a phone would be with a film in it! Probably the size of one of the 80's brick phones I would imagine. May as well have a seperate film camera!
Yes, I have used windows media payer. Please note that it automatically downloads codec's required, except for all the obscure ones that everyone on slashdot uses...
The aim is to free computer makers to sell Windows bundled with rival audiovisual software such as RealNetworks RealPlayer or Apple's Quicktime, the sources said.
Ahh, so windows would still come with a video player. So can't OEM people install real, etc before selling at the moment? Guess not.
Ahh, so the artical is basically saying that whoever builds the machine should be able to decide what video playback goes on it? I started switching off while reading it;-)
Why on earth wouldn't I want windows to play back videos fresh out of the box.
I'm sure the average windows user wouldn't want to have to play around with selecting/installing video playback software when all they want to do is playback a clip they've downloaded.
I work in a business that employees family members. The biggest problem is if one of them is poor at what they do, you have to deal with them and their boss is a relation (also your boss).
What do you do? You can't go to the boss and say "XXX is rubbish, get rid of them" because XXX is their spouse! Probably end up getting rid of you instead.
I can't wait for CF cards to get bigger and cheaper, that way I can justify buying a PDA, simply to play back movies on the go (well, until we have a video iPod the same size as current iPods with battery life of 10 hours or so... now that's imagination:-) ).
The major problem with playing computer games on a TV is that they are designed to be displayed with a nice crystal clear screen (monitor). Put them on a TV screen (try plugging your TV into your graphics cards TV out) and on all but hi-res TV with non-composite input, it's really damn hard to see text (usually games display them too small). Been there, done that.
Hi, in Greenwich, London (UK) the observatory has had a green laser coming out of it every so often over the last few months. Anyone know what that's all about?
I'm a Kiwi living in the UK and I think you're missing the point. Having all those people giving the premier a huge buzz is exactly what is needed for people looking at HEADLINE news over here. I feel really proud watching NZ on Sky News (one of the leading news channels over here). This is fantastic for NZ.
You are incorrect. You can't go from the beach to snowcapped mountains to a rainforest in a day. We have bush, not rainforest:-)
BTW, you can go from a snowcapped mountain to some fantastic beaches in a couple of hours. Especially in Taranaki (the buldge on the west coast of the North Island).
128k is "broadband" (256k if you are lucky) in NZ, with capped amounts for international traffic (NZ$80 per month for uncapped)!

I went back for a holiday a few weeks ago, first time I've heard a modem since last time I went back!
No way I can ever go back to modems I'm afraid.

Don't open this at work. It's not even of chicks... Nasty.
Need new hardware/software if you want to listen to surround sound mp3's in surround sound.

You have to mod your XBox to play pirated games. Bummer.
Or some New Zealand, or Australian, or any other country at the moment...
As soon as Bush gets voted out, the US dollar will go back to its normal strength (turning now actually). I'm converting my pounds to $$$'s now!

Isn't that what wordpad is for?

Must be American. The only use for guns there are for shooting people, aren't they?! :-)

After looking at the screen shots, don't you mean Windows Xp 2? :-)
RTFA. It's a "stepping stone" to get full blown Windows running on XBox.

It lights up the Meridian Line across the sky.

Perhaps you could make it cruse along on 4 wheels by flicking a switch. Wear the tires unevenly though...
Bush is a New Zealand term for rainforest (dense rainforest), so I guess we are both right?! ;-)

Sky news in UK is showing the whole hype pretty much as headline news. That's fantastic for NZ.
