Use SuSE, and configure it by Yast. It's all point and click and by now it is pretty sophisticated. You *also* want use the packages not fully supported by SuSE, like dvd players with DeCCS? Use kpackage and install
apt-libs, synaptic, and apt. Now you can even install the latest and greatest without ever having to see configure or apt (well, only once!).
You should have tried howto's. And i can advise google.
And about those kernel API's, that is why you should use the packages of ONE provider (or have a bit more skill). Because if you do, SuSE (or any other bigger distro) will make sure your automatic upgrades are without issues. What more do you want? I suppose you started experimenting with your installation and were bitten by your own actions. It happens.
Oh, and if something breaks after an upgrade, you simply do a rollback. Upgrading doesn't have to be a risky, sloppy administrating however is very risky.
Well, i agreed with him yesterday, when he called you an idiot (and i wasn't the only one, judging by the moderation). You later accepted his apology. In my opinion he didn't have to make the apology, but that's beside the point.
But here you are again! Talking about "incidents", naming people "rogue", insulting PHP developers, naming people amateurs, etc.
What is your problem, i can only see you tarnishing the community.
What is it with all those utter idiots here? The US built its OWN part of the internet. And you can have it, nobody will complain about that. It is just that many other countries would like someone ELSE than the US to control their part of it. And believe it or not, many of those countries would rather trust the UN than the US. Now why is that?
"The US created, built, and financed the internet structure." So, those cables here in the Netherlands, that i'm using right now. Did the u.s. created, built, and financed those? No, my friend, those are dutch cables. And the u.s. created, built, and financed its own cables, within its own borders.
"I'm sure the US is ready to hand over the keys any day now" You don't seem to realize that the world already has the keys. The DNS protocol is old and simple, and once you know how it works you simply point your DNS servers elsewhere. It is not that the u.s. (ICANN of course) has an unbreakable grip on the internet, it just that the world has allowed the u.s. its position. That is, up till now. At least, that's what the title is suggesting. Get it now?
Uh, the u.s. can't even handle an evacuation. Sorry, but it's true.
Now see what a dumn argument that was, feeling stupid yet?. And I'm still waiting for a good reason for the u.s. to control the internet.
You seem to have a very narrow view of the third world. "developing" Is the word this is about. These computers are not for Darfur but for countries like Indonesia and India. You know, where people actually can have a future.
Disliking microsoft for its practices and mediocre software does NOT cost me time, thank-you-very-much. Having to use it everyday at work costs me a lot of my pleasure in using computers, however.
"if Linux nerds spent just a fraction of the time"
The mainstream idea is that the "experiments" have failed and the result...
I don't know what circles you move in, but this is not the mainstream but the conservative meme you're echoing here. Almost every Dutch will also be able to tell you that the Netherlands has the lowest drugs deaths in Europe. Germany has for instance 6 times more drug users per capita and 45(!) times more drug deaths, the United States has 20 times the number of deaths. The number of youth using cannabis is also lower than France, the UK, Belgium, Ireland and... the United States (go War on Drugs go!). Looks like the "experiments" that we've been doing here for the last 30 years are somewhat successfull.
Excuse me? Are you seriously suggesting that someone (who?) is imaging HDD's for all the different Dell models and this doesn't cost any money, to anyone? So, if this mysterious entity can image the Dell models times HDD configurations times Windows versions (Multi media/Professional/Home and stuff), why can't they make a few images a HDD for Linux? It would seem to me that we're talking about quite a few different images for Microsoft alone, a couple more wouldn't make this price difference.
Maybe you're just not very aware of anything. The transparency in KDE has been a recurring topic of/. since the move from xf86 to x.org. Try to get with the program here... And this thing about the icon previews, you sure you're not using CDE?
Now, the REALLY pathetic thing here's your score at the moment: 5, interesting. So now we know, you only need to belittle and criticise KDE for some points.
It *is* an obscure cam. But. See here: http://mxhaard.free.fr/index.html Spca5xx Kernel 2.6.x drivers.
Have fun!

s/and the fault of the system/and not the fault of the system/
Unbelievable that you wrote that. If there is a manual override missing in a system, it's a design omission, and the fault of the system.

Sorry, i tried to spell "dumb". And i think my responses to the those before you answer your questions. And yes, thank you, i *do* feel good.
That is _not_ my point at all. And had it happened elsewhere, something else would have happened. And it would probably have been better organized.
No, WE paid our own infrastructure. Who do you fail to see THAT? And, please don't go all pathetic on me here, i never called you a fascist.
Sure, but we built our own here. Those are our cables, our servers, its OUR internet.

To the point, clear and good reasoning. No wonder you got modded as a troll. These are turning out to be interesting threads.
You must be so proud!

"if Linux nerds spent just a fraction of the time"
Have you ever _been_ to http://www.sourceforge.net/? Do you who put all that software there?
"what an amazing world we'd be living in by now"
You mean a world without microsoft?

Did this moron just get "modded 5 funny" twice for making the same lame joke twice? What is wrong with modding today?
Well, it was the very first thing i thought of seeing the title. Or are did your sarcasm tags fell of?
About your last problem: underscoring
Open Konqueror, Settings, configure konqueror, Appearance, underline filenames

What? You expected some spokespersons in the article?
