    Use SuSE, and configure it by Yast. It's all point and click and by now it is pretty sophisticated. You *also* want use the packages not fully supported by SuSE, like dvd players with DeCCS? Use kpackage and install apt-libs, synaptic, and apt. Now you can even install the latest and greatest without ever having to see configure or apt (well, only once!).

    You should have tried howto's. And i can advise google.

    And about those kernel API's, that is why you should use the packages of ONE provider (or have a bit more skill). Because if you do, SuSE (or any other bigger distro) will make sure your automatic upgrades are without issues. What more do you want? I suppose you started experimenting with your installation and were bitten by your own actions. It happens.

    Oh, and if something breaks after an upgrade, you simply do a rollback. Upgrading doesn't have to be a risky, sloppy administrating however is very risky.

    What is it with all those utter idiots here? The US built its OWN part of the internet. And you can have it, nobody will complain about that. It is just that many other countries would like someone ELSE than the US to control their part of it. And believe it or not, many of those countries would rather trust the UN than the US. Now why is that?

    "I'm sure the US is ready to hand over the keys any day now" You don't seem to realize that the world already has the keys. The DNS protocol is old and simple, and once you know how it works you simply point your DNS servers elsewhere. It is not that the u.s. (ICANN of course) has an unbreakable grip on the internet, it just that the world has allowed the u.s. its position. That is, up till now. At least, that's what the title is suggesting. Get it now?

    I don't know what circles you move in, but this is not the mainstream but the conservative meme you're echoing here. Almost every Dutch will also be able to tell you that the Netherlands has the lowest drugs deaths in Europe. Germany has for instance 6 times more drug users per capita and 45(!) times more drug deaths, the United States has 20 times the number of deaths. The number of youth using cannabis is also lower than France, the UK, Belgium, Ireland and... the United States (go War on Drugs go!). Looks like the "experiments" that we've been doing here for the last 30 years are somewhat successfull.

    Excuse me? Are you seriously suggesting that someone (who?) is imaging HDD's for all the different Dell models and this doesn't cost any money, to anyone? So, if this mysterious entity can image the Dell models times HDD configurations times Windows versions (Multi media/Professional/Home and stuff), why can't they make a few images a HDD for Linux? It would seem to me that we're talking about quite a few different images for Microsoft alone, a couple more wouldn't make this price difference.

    Maybe you're just not very aware of anything. The transparency in KDE has been a recurring topic of /. since the move from xf86 to x.org. Try to get with the program here... And this thing about the icon previews, you sure you're not using CDE?
