    Why not create a SDL target for GDK? The bulk of the work is already there (in the directfb target), you just need to implement setup/teardown. This way, you'll have both portability (SDL/OpenGL) and skinnability (GTK themes).

    Actually, on my system jEdit takes about 30 megs of virtual memory.

    Oh, I agree with you on all points - I'm a Java developer in this life. Java will never be mainstream on the desktop for this exactly reason - a single application is too heavyweight.

    Interesting. Last time I've used jEdit, the memory used was indicated in the bottom right of the window, and it didn't rise over 6 megs. Admittedly, there should be move overhead that that and from the people that I know that use JEdit I have the smallest collection of plugins, still...

    If it was written in Lisp, it would be at least compilable to an executable, whereas with Java you need a 25+Megs runtime....

    I had a similar problem with Sim City 4 - it requires a CD-ROM drive to run off. Guess what, I have a DVD-ROM and a CD-burner, ant it refuses to run from both of them. WTF, who buys CD-ROM drives these days? Oh, and The Sims 2? It's 60 friggin euros here in Greece!

    Hah. When I was younger, I had the relevation that the whole solar system was an almost ideal starting system for a species in an RTS setting.

    Consider: Earth has a large moon that causes tides, volcanoes, tectonic subsumption, with the end result that there are minable metal ores on the surface. The moon also acts as a staging and mining base, and it is much easier to get to than another planet.

    Venus is in the long-term teraformable, Mars, while not long-term terraformable (water evaporates off the planet due to low gravity) can certainly host contained/adapted life. The asteroids are readily-available metal ores directly in space, Jupiter and Saturn have moons that are bigger than Mars (almost long-term terraformable) and free hydrogen in abundant supply.

    I mean, hell, this map has a lot of resources!

    Yeah, so danger is an abstract idea and can't really have color.

    Let's say you're walking in the forest, and you see some vivid red splotches on the foliage near you. What do you feel?

    Not necessarily. I'm using the Criteria class from Apache's Torque ORM tool, and it's a pleasure to use. Really helps when you need to construct dynamic queries, and you don't need to buy into the whole ORM thing.

    Actual example: I bought SimCity 4 as a present for my fiancee. After installation the game won't run as it claims that it can't find the original CD. After much serching, googling and fiddling, it looks like the friggin copy protection requires that you have a CD-ROM drive to play the game on. Not a DVD-ROM, not a CD-RW, but an actual CD-ROM - who buys these things anymore?

    I actuall had to find a no-cd crack to play the (bought!) game....

    No, because you cannot force the outcome of the correlation, which is always random. However, it will be the same random stream for both the local and the remote instance. You can then transmit the information XOR'ed with the random signal over classical, slower-than-light methods. The recipient goes on to decode the signal using his own random stream. If the resulting signal is random noise, the information has been tampered with.

    Ok, facts first: I've been using Linux since about 1996, and I'm using it for the last 5 years as my primary desktop (Software engineering :-)). I was first using slackware, and did have fun tracking down all the dependencies and compiling from source.

    However, I've been using Debian for the last 2 years because its update mechanism is so absolutely user-friendly. While I've been using unstable and there are some hitches, particurlarly when large components such as X or Gnome are updated, these do get fixed within a day or two.

    I did recently some very back-of-the-envelope comparisons of Greek companies, and it looked like that the pre-tax profit margin was ~25-35% for the Software and Consultant sector, while the rest were less than 8%. However, I have absolutely no clue as to the taxation of corporations here, only that the income tax of individuals is (after a certain income) at least 30%. Oh, And that I mandatorily pay €236.00/Mo for Retirement and Healthcare (that does not include dental...).

    Security, and specifically the Java Security Manager. It allows safe plugin systems to be developed, such that the container can be absolutely sure that the containee cannot execute exit() or fork/exec or read/write inappropriate files.

    While some may arue that tis is a needed work-around when you have all your eggs in a single process, it is not a wart fitted on as an after-thought, it fits really well in the philosophy of java.
