Well then, we have something in common. You said it wasn't testable that someone created everything. I provided a thought experiment to show that though distasteful there is a way. while if you are refering to my quote of - "While posts that regularly boil down to "your magic man in the sky is bullshit, and you are an idiot" get modded to +5 every time in response." I am sorry, I didn't mean you, it was a generalization. If you read my other posts in this thread you will see that though less vehement than you we agree about ID'ers very much.
If you are speaking of the great-great? grandfathers original post and "Where did the eye come from?" crap then yes, indeed, it is crap. As a religeous person originally trained as a biologist (raised by a biologist as well) this ID stuff makes my teeth hurt(crappy "designed" wisdom tooth anyway). The part that bothers me almost as much is the amount of bile that gets spewn on anyone avowing any sort of religeous belief as well. Everytime this comes up on slashdot I see people that make seasoned well thought out posts that essentially boil down to "my faith is my own, not all of us are nutjobs" struggle to get moderated to +3 While posts that regularly boil down to "your magic man in the sky is bullshit, and you are an idiot" get modded to +5 every time in response. Though I agree that the ID'ers need to take a much harder look at what the heck they are talking about. I am just glad they have never hit on some of the actual things in biology that you can point a finger at and say "Jeez, how the heck did that evolve?"
I don't expect him to report a thing. If you sum his post it works out to be something along the lines of "There is no way to prove the existence of God". My response was simply "Sure there is, you can even take the short road to do it." Sure it is an odd experiment with results that only one person can see, but it is still going to be proof for that one person. I can toss analogies out all day long but what little coherant writing I have done has gotten me nothing but troll mods and insults from ACs. My background is in biology. I understant evolution, hell I have tought it before. What ends up happening here is not support of science but anti-organized religeous zealotry. As it happens, I actually converted from atheism to theism *because* of my college evolutionary biology courses. But that is another story.
Ah, yes, ever has it been such. Better to silence the heretics then heaven forbid try to respond to them. Sad to see the road that religeon followed is now being followed just as blindly by the new 'science as religeon' crowd. For the record, I have been in IT full time for about 2 years now, before that I managed a Microbiology lab. Take that Mr Troll Mod.
I'll simply note that ID has no better answer than consensus physics. "Jesus did it" (or Unnameddesignerwhowewon'tcallGodeventhoughweallkno wthat'swhowe'retalkingabout) is not a testable or falsifiable answer, and is a statement of faith rather than a scientific hypothesis.
Uh, sure it is, you just dont want to perform the science needed to get the answer. There are quite frankly any number of ways to preform the experiment. I sugesst something painless. Now after your heart has beat it's last, you will have your answer. Rock solid. Now, like much of science, you may not like the answer you get, but you have to take the good with the bad. In fact, it seems which ever answer *you* would find, it wouldn't make you happy anyway. So there you go, scientifially testable. And you can take comfort with the knowledge that you and all of the fish that transitioned to land over the eons felt the same way, either - "crap, I can't breathe after all" or "Hey this rocks - look at the trees!"
You are right, my point was not the death penalty, but to the point of being railroaded by the legal justice system. How many innocent men have sat on death row? Here is a quote from wikipedia "Most notably, 67% of capital convictions are eventually overturned, mainly on procedural grounds of incompetent legal counsel, police or prosecutors who suppressed evidence and judges who gave jurors the wrong instructions.[4][5] Seven percent of those whose sentences were overturned between 1973 and 1995 have been found not guilty. Ten percent were retried and resentenced to death.[6]" even if you want to take the low number 7% of people is an outrageous number of innocent men whose lives have been shattered by the system. Read the bit I quoted from the grandparent again. My statement was about innocent men not having to fear procecution. Also find the pot-of-gold for one of those finally exonerated. As for your point if you want to read about what might be the first one executed read here. But as the people who investigate the mistakes are also the ones procecuting the original crime I don't see a lot of hope. Truth is, the reason that none have been found IMHO is that no one in an official capacity or position investigates a crime after a sentence has been handed down. This one was done by the NAACP, fer cripes sake. Most of the work is done on making sure the innocent aren't killed, finding the ones that still slip through or already have slipped through, well, there there just isn't enough money or manpower. No lawyer in the world would tell you with a straight face that it 100% has never happened. I sure hope I or no one I know is that fluke.
Bill Kling, the president of MPR talked about this on morning edition one day. His statement was that they were required by law to say who sponsered the show. How much and for how long I would imagine is spelled out as well. It isn't advertising if you have to do it.
Sera (one of the first people to sign up for the Current)
How can you have "no hope" of defeating their lawyers in a crime that you didn't commit? If there was "no evidence" then you would have all sorts of legal avenues for reprisal, many of which could possibly lead to a large pot of gold.
You obviously have never been through the "Justice" system. I suggest you look up the names of those who have been put to death and later found innocent. Try deathpnaltyinfo to watch people getting railroaded in almost real time.
His distractors are just as bad as he is. I mean "LordHunter317:Obviously, that statement is contradictory with reality so your claim is invalid." Yeesh, classic post based high handed snobery. He offers a "patch" that he never provides, then gripes about how Automatix isn't right - which his patch would fix. If LordHunter317 has a better plan - then produce it - bitching about how someone else does it is not only disingenuous but anti-productive. In short, yeah Arnie types like a l33t hacker, but the supercilious attacks of LordHunter are no better.
Ahhh....Then I think the earlier comment about keyboard macros is apropos. My 2 cents is to run out and buy a Nostromo if the let you install the software. The programming ability of the unit is amazing and it will allow you, once you get used to it to hit one key or a combo of keys to get things done. They are also cheeeeap! I have never tried one over putty, but I would imagine that it would still work. There are also keyboards with memory on them that dont need a software install, the ones I have seen have been godawful in price though. Plus there is macro software out there for windows that seems relativly cheap as well. Just google it Sera
My personal choice is the MS Trackball Explorer. Wonderfull design, acurate optical and very nice drivers in MS (holy buckets does mouse button control in linux blow chow). As fate would have it they got discontinued. I snapped up 3 that I plan on slowly doleing out over the years even though my current 3 (2 at home, 1 at work) work great and have for years. I looked around quite a bit before I bought the three, but found nothing that came close to it's ergonomics, and abilities. And no, don't suggest a thumb type trackball, I have used a few and it makes my thumb hurt just looking at them.
It will go on sale in the spring and is expected to sell for between $300 and $400 in the US.
I take it then that all of the coke that could be purchased with that kind of cash has been already snorted at Sony Corp Headquarters. 3-400 for an e-reader??? A basic Palm is what, $99? What besides DRM does this do extra??
She is going to need insane computing power one way or the other. If you can convince the local community college to let her use their machines for a sunday she may have a chance. She will need to be able to get multiple machines to run cocurrently (ala MOSIX etc.) but that is a different issue. If she is in the Mpls/StP area, I can offer our machines for this if you want, reply to this and I will post my email.
In 2005, personal calling on wireless phones in the United States exceeded that on residential land lines, even though 35 percent of the U.S. population doesn't have wireless, according to the Yankee Group.
Yeah, because eveybody with a cell phone is always yacking on it all the time about nothing. Who here hasn't seen the guy standing in the grocery store asking about which ice cream to buy or what besides eggs, milk and bread he was supposed to get? Or the movie theater morons, or people at work who use it as a second phone line so the boss doesn't know they are getting personal calls (even though where I work they don't care) or....well you get my point. Before the rise of cell phones, calling someone had to have a purpose. Now it seems it is just a reason to blather on at someone.
it is possible to obtain stem cells without killing children?
"Stem Cells" are different. The definition starts from moment one - an egg is fertilized and begins division, now there are two. Left alone that mass will form a human being, split and they will form identical twins. Split them, hold one frozen - you have a "Stem cell". These are the "lines" that the Feds are holding to 11 (10?). "Stem Cells" run a greater area though. As the cells divide they get more specialized. Eventually you get cells that really should be bone cells or blood cells or nerve cells. If you grab them at this point you can, as the theory goes reinsert them to an adult to get them to recreate thier work. Thus, for a man with a torn spinal nerve, a stem nerve cell would know how to make it whole again. This is the promise of "Stem Cells".
Imagine a branching tree, and at each branch things get more specialized - like an evolutionary tree (caution - bad anaolgy in progress) if you could grab that proto ancestor you might be able to mix it back in to get what you want - e.g. I want smarter people, mix more brain 'stems' in - or, I want a bone fixed, gimme proto bone 'stems'. this holds great promise but it is many many years off.
Sadly what your friends have done is buy into a fad. What they are buying is the hope that the cord cells are 'closer to the trunk of the stem cell tree' which may happen, but chances are that when the research finally comes of age, your bone marrow will be as valuable. In short, they are wasting thier money.
If the Universe requires God to create it, then who or what created God? Adding God doesn't answer anything.
Certainly it does, you just don't like the conclusion. The "then who or what created God?" thing is usually called the 'Putting God in a Box' arguement. I believe that we can both say that time/space began at the moment of the Big Bang right? And I think that we can say that every major religeon, and most of the minors as well have their $diety creating the universe. So is it argueable that $diety lives outside the normal time/space stream. Recursion, ok, lets use that, God created God, why not? Or, perhaps, just perhaps, we have no clue what it is really like outside of time/space and our reference to it. Lets face it, *something* started the universe. No one really knows who or what or how. But I always find it disappointing that as a athiest you can have faith, yes faith, in a physical explaination of how the universe came into being without any real proof at all, and yet when someone expresses thier faith on how it all began, well...they are wrong. Sounds like a version of Catholics vs Lutherans to me. Science as a whole gets to wave its collective hands every so often and say "Well, we just dont know". Yet at the same time to do that as a thiestic person gets you the loony award in the modern day. Given time science will explain many many things. But here is something - I will bet you that how the Big Bang started will not be explained in your lifetime. Here is the other part though. I bet 2 seconds after the end of your lifetime, that you will have the answer.
`Look at popular sports, for example. The social companionship is enhanced exponentially when there's a common primary subject of focus, whether it is an operating system, a particular footbal team (American, British, Martian, etc.), or a certain league of motorsports.
Hey, thank you for twisting my brain - I needed it! This wonderfully explains the Slashdot 'Linix' (really anything but Windows) bias. It is not that they are anti-MS but pro-Linux, in the same way one roots for the 'Home Team'. It is a cliche that Americans always root for the underdog, especially in sports, but true in this case. Thank you Sir for the insight!
Is it just me or are the speed claims overblown by NX? I have run it between work and home and I really dont see any diff between VNC and NX. NX seems to need to totally refresh the screen like VNC does and what ever compresssion it uses seems to not give it any advantage. What are your thoughts?
...said the A.C. hahahahaha ...you should go into comedy.
