Sure, its very depressing -- especially all the shit about birth defects (I read it while my wife was pregnant -- not a good idea!). But it really does build to a great conclusion, and I'd recommend that you press on.
I would be inclined agree, if it weren't for the fact that Stand on Zanzibar, Shockwave Rider and The Sheep Look Up are three of the best Sci-Fi books ever written. I've read other Brunner stories, and they were shit; but this trio is absolute, pure, 24-fuckin-carat gold.
That is an urban legend; while that particular mistake can be made in Fortran 77, it did not cause any sort of accident. Check up on Snopes.
In Fortran 90/95, using the preferred free-form source, spaces are no longer allowed in identifiers, and the erroneous code will no longer compile.
But hey, this is Slashdot, so dont worry; it's OK that you don't have a fucking clue what you are talking about.

as for excuse of g95 being in beta, well 1995 is a bit of a long time ago, and its been years since the g95 project started. its starting to rival dukeNukem's next release date.
What an absurd remark. What is to stop people from using a commercial compiler? And looking at the g95 web page, I see that the project started in 2000. When you remember that it has been an essentially one-man effort, five years for a compiler sounds pretty good to me. Why are you fixated on 1995? The Fortran 95 standard wasn't released until 1997. Do you know anything about what you are talking about?

My company moved to C++ from fortran just for that reason.
Well, then, your company is managed by a group of ignorant fucktards. To go through the perils of a language switch, purely because you are dissatisfied with a free compiler, is one of the stupidest business decisions I can imagine.
It killed it because unless you write in a vaccuum you have to write to the lowest common denominator of major compilers if you expect to distribute or port your code.
No, you write code conformant to the Fortran 95 standard. Then, any compiler can compile it, including g95.
Those packages which do much of their numerics in fortran have to use cripled libraries to accomodate g77 and g95s missing syntax.
That you mention these wholly-separate products in the same breath suggests you don't really know what you're talking about.
that is why the cripled implementation of g95 was what doomed F95.
That you use the past tense, when g95 is still in beta, is incontrovertible evidence that you don't have a fucking clue what you're talking about. Now piss off, you troll.
Anyone who mistook g95 for F95 would indeed be right in concluding fortran was a dated useless language.
Dude, g95 isn't yet completed. Why the hell would one expect it to be fully-functional? Got an axe to grind about the g95/gfortran fork?
My favorite parts of fortrans are that one cannot overflow a buffer
Rubbish, you can do just the same stupid things that you can with C. The difference is that Fortran can implement arrays without the need for pointers, and most Fortran compilers support decent (but very slow) bounds checking on these arrays.
RIP fortran95, killed by g95.
Again, this statement is misleading and meaningless. There are plenty of other mature Fortran 95 compilers on the market, and -- upon their completion -- g95 and gfortran will add to to the selection. How has g95 'killed' Fortran 95?

That's the classic planned-economy/market-economy trade off. We see it everywhere from tractor factories to airlines to health care.
In the UK, my phone bill was around 20 pounds (~$40) per month. Upon moving to the US, my first month's bill was $250. Cellphones in the US are a fucking rip off, free market notwithstanding.
Precisely what aspect of the cellphone market in Europe is a 'planned economy'? Have you ever actually been to Eurpoe? Or is your knowledge -- like many Americans -- based on the Epcot Centre at Disneyland?
You seem to equate 'theory' with 'guess'. Actually, the word 'theory' in a scientific context indicates an extremely well-tested, valid model of the natural world --- essentially, as close as one can possibly get to the truth behind what is going on. Newton's gravitation is a theory. Einstein's relativity is a theory. Maxwell's electromagnetism is a theory. Darwin's evolution is a theory.
In the specific case of the big bang, there is very strong evidence pointing towards its occurrence --- things like the uniform recession of the galaxies, and the cosmic microwave background (basically, an afterglow from the event itself). This is hard, cold evidence --- nothing unsound about it.
we don't know how big the universe is, so there would be no way to calculate a point of 'bang.'
In fact, we do know how big the Universe is. And furthermore, since spacetime itself was created in the big bang, the event didn't happen at a single point, but everywhere.
AMD have already given demos of their dual-core chips (a few months ago, IIRC). The Opteron architecture -- through its hypertransport memory bus, with on-die memory controllers -- has been designed from the get-go to be a multi-core component.
Intel, on the other hand, will be fitting two independent chips into the same piece of silicon. Since there is no on-die memory controller, a new motherboard will be required to use Intel's DC chips. The reason why the package size is the same, is that they are die-shrinking each chip.
You obiously don't have a fucking clue what you are talking about. You muppet.
The availability or otherwise of a false color image reflects only on how the researchers chose to present their data; has no bearing whatsoever on the existence of the galaxy. In this particular case, it would in fact be unusual to present a false color image, since radio data are more commonly illustrated using contour maps.
How do they know it's rotating like a galaxy?
From the radio observations, which pick up 21cm emission from cold, neutral hydrogen gas. Doppler shifts of the 21cm line allow them to establish a rotation curve for the galaxy.
They haven't shown any sort of evidence of the real matter they claim to have detected.
No, in fact they have presented evidence for the real matter (neutral hydrogen), in the form of the 21cm emission.
To post a picture of empty space and say it's full of dark matter is just stupid.
No, it's quite significant: based on the radio emission, we would expect a population of stars, that would show up in the optical image. The actual absence of these stars, as evidenced by the 'empty space', is the whole reason that this is news.
I think the only dark matter this article shows is in the astronomers head.
By totally misunderstanding every aspect of the story, you have effctively stood up in front of the/. community, and loudly proclaimed 'I'm dumb as shit'. Congratulations.
I know a more efficient way: it's called "cycling".
I agree wholeheartedly with you, which is why I cycle to work every day. However, the problem with the cycling approach is that it skips out a crowd-winning step in the drive -> get fat -> liposuction -> biodiesel cycle: there is no satisfying consumption of Krispy Kreme, Twinkies, etc etc.
Wouldn't it be truly ironic if the medical waste was liposuction fat (think Fight Club)? Then, the clinical obesity afflicting one in three Americans would itself be powering the automobiles that are, in part, responsible for the obesity.

What other difference did you notice when you moved here in 1991?
In fact, 2003.

Brown dwarfs are not electron degenerate
In fact, they are; at the high densities found in brown dwarf cores, the electrons are partially degenerate. Same for low-mass stars, IIRC.

Maybe people would be more able to cope with unemployment if taxes were lower.
How's that? Unemployed people don't pay income tax in the UK, since they have no income. What was your point again?

The "problem" electrode as far as I know is actually the graphite (like the stuff in pencils) end which get's reduced and forms a lithium salt.
How's that? AFAIK, you can't form salts with carbon (aka graphite). Only with things like halide ions.
I know a more efficient way: it's called "cycling".
