    True, but the worrying aspect of US foreign policy is that decisions are being made under the tacit assumption that America's allies today will at some point be enemies in the future. This is hardly a respectful manner in which to treat ones friends; imagine if your friends always had a gun pointed at you, so they could shoot you if an argument developed?

    Um. Isn't that why they advertise 20-minute skip protection?

    Erm, if the heads embed themselves in the platters, no amount of data buffering is going to help you out. But, as I said in my OP, I don't know what sort of mechanical protection is built into iPods.

    One thing I've never quite understood about iPods: in the recent TV adverts, we are shown happy iPod owners moshing to loud music. I'm wondering whether one can actually jump around to this extent, without the iPod's drive heads nosediving into the platters? Anyone willing to try?

    ...and on a similar note, anyone know where I can find a Gemtek micro-USB (internal) wireless card? I've fried the one which came inside my laptop (bad firmware flash), and I'm having real difficulty locating a replacement. Gemtek themselves don't reply to my emails.

    'Plagiarise' is the conventional English spelling, 'plagiarize' is an alternative which arises in the American dialect. An example of the former can be found in the title of this article from The Observer (one of the UK Sunday broadsheets).

The site you reference there concerns me greatly; its first-grade knee-jerk attitude reeks of hysterical MacCarthyism and, despite its claims to the contrary, I see it primarily as a tool for vigilante justice, which is the worst possible facet of civilization.

    I'm not going to take you off my foe list; if this upsets you, then you'll just have to grow a thicker skin. Keep up the good work on the ad hominems -- but next time, try to come up with something yourself, rather than plagiarising from your betters.

    Oh, and for the record, I have a PhD in astrophysics. I'm absolutely flattered that you think I hold this qualification at the age of 17, but honesty forces me to admit that I wasn't awarded it until I turned 24. But thanks for the compliment.

    One devfs gotcha in 2.6, which caught me out for a while, is that the devpts (pseudo-tty) functionality has been separated out. In 2.4 kernels, mounting /dev using devfs automatically mounted /dev/pts too; however, this behaviour has changed in 2.6, and you have to mount /dev/pts explicitly:

    mount -t devpts none /dev/pts

    On some systems (such as Gentoo), the rc scripts are smart enough to do this automatically.

    Will Son of Concorde be twice the economic failure that Concorde was? On technological and inspirational grounds, Concorde was fantastic; but let's never forget that British Airways and Air France lost money hand-over-fist with the whole venture. As long as air resistance scales super-linearly with velocity, getting there faster will always prove less economical than travelling at a more sedate speed.

    Actually, RISC OS's UI is a vague rip-off of the original Windows GUI before they changed it.

    I find this highly unlikely; RiscOS came out, IIRC, in 1988, predating Windows 3.0 by 2 years.

    (Yes, I know Scotland was an independent country in the past, but it hasn't been in quite some time.)

    Not since James VI of Scotland took over the English crown, meanining that the nations making up Great Britain (i.e., England and Scotland) became (and have been ever since) ruled by Scots. Which the Scots tend to forget when they harp on about losing their independence.

    ...and lets not forget that the successor to the BBC, the Acorn Archimedes, was the first-ever RISC-based home computer, despite claims that Apple make to the contrary regarding their PPC machines. The Archimeded' innovative RiscOS operating system introduced the task bar, a design we now see ripped off in Microsoft Windows. Furthermore, it was BillG himself, when shown a demonstration of Acorn's low-cost networking setup (Econet), who commented that the idea of linking computers together "wouldn't catch on".

    Remember, America, the notion of free speech and free choice has meaning only so long as the citizenry has the ability excercise them. Without this ability, these rights become nothing more than wishful thinking on some pretty paper in a fancy library.
