  1. Think of Broadband on What if Energy was (Nearly) Free? · · Score: 1

If we had totally free energy, it would be the internet equivalent to unlimited high speed broadband after a 56k trickle.

At first, people would suck it up until they were sick of it, and then some would go back to their same habits. I for one, would still be consious enough to use my reduced watt light bulbs, but I wouldn't worry about leaving the AC on while I was at work.

Some people would abuse the system (P2P, Kazaa, and whatnot) and suck up the energy bandwidth, so to speak, and the industry will benefit, much like it has from broadband.

For those of you who say the grid will be a problem, it will be. The same as it is with broadband. The tech is out but people can't have it because of coporate control and upgrade cost.

Too much money to be made in free energy for it to be free. If you want free energy, buy a house on top of the mountain and invest in some windmills. Even then you'll probably only get dialup.

As for space travel... mini fusion plants in spacecreaft would eliminate the problem of propulsion cost, waste heat from it can be expelled into space.. who cares if Marvin the Martian has a sunburn. As for launching on earth... who would notice a few more degrees in Arizona, it's only a dry heat.

  2. Just like any buisness.... on E-mail Tax As Way Of Preventing Spam · · Score: 1

The cost will trickle down to the consumer. Say Dell figures that to process your order will take an average of 5 emails. They'll just add the cost to your order. What's 5 cents to the end consumer? If they cared they'd cash in their soda cans.

Spammers, since this is who this'll intend to deter, will also figure it as a cost of doing buisness. Say the average spammer sends out 2000 penile enlargement emails, it'll cost him $20. Out of that 2000, say 30 bite the bait and buy the sugar pills. The spammer just made a huge profit, and that 20 bucks is chump change.

The only benefit would be the telco's, who apparently will be routing the money away from the purpose of broadband to make a commercial trying to get yuppies to download the latest Pop sond in a ringtone.

Yet again yuppies benefit, geeks suffer.

No. I'm saying think first, form your own opinion based on knowledge, and then spread the word. I went to an anti-war protest rally, and asked three questions.

    Why are you here?
What is the worst part about war?
What is the largest risk a post-war Iraq faces when Saddam's regime falls?

You'd be amazed at what I heard. 1)Why are you here? because someone else wanted to go and I'm with them. 2)What is the worst part about war? People dying. 3) Post war Iraq? Uh... Finding a new leader.

People had no clue about Iraq.. and I bet a few of them could find it on a map. If I brought a globe with me I would have asked.

Heh, well, actually, I hate Fox news, and Bill O'Reilly whines about children too much... which is actually my whole point. America has gotten too soft. Alot of people care too much about things beyond their control. The whole "What about the children" thing Bill O'Reilly spews out is a prime example of how people react.

My argument to the top of this thread was education. People protest war because war is bad. They don't think about what is going on outside their bubble of perspective. People protest about the environment because pollution is bad. They say "Don't pollute ANWAR!" But have no clue what the environmental hazards may be. People are against the Patriot Act, but have no idea what the good points of the Act are.. just the bad ones.

I'm not saying all is good in the world and bomb everyone. All I ask is know what the heck you are talking about.

I'm willing to bet you're an environmentalist, who is pro-life and anti-war. One of those types who protest cause there's something to protest about... and you do it all in the name of Democracy, even if you can't tell me the difference between democracy and a republic.

Please please please become educated before blabbering opinions.

  9. Multiple Email Addresses on Ask ISP Owner Barry Shein About the Spam Wars · · Score: 1

My simple answer to spam is control of information. The more your address is out there, the more spam you get. Two years ago I created a second email address. This address (in hotmail, no less) is specifically for mailing lists and opt-in lists. The other address (ISP address) is only given to human correspondance. It's amazing how I'm not bothered by spam anymore...

My simple question is... why doesn't everyone else do this? Ignorance is bliss.
