Hear hear. For me, the 80's were a boom time. Had lots of cash and could spend it. CD prices sky-rocketed and it just seemed like part of the boom. Then the 90's happened, and people had less cash to spend. BUT CD prices stayed high. I went from trying to buy 4 albumns a month to try to expand my collection, to not going to the store anymore. Then the prices got even worse. Sheesh... make the CDs in China already and sell them for cheap like everything else man.
I know a guy, who said he had a VB4 decompiler from MS. He wanted to know why the exe's where so big, so he decomiled one and found a 40 page contract saying that MS owned this exe.
RealBasic is better than VB6. I used VB5/6 for 3 years full-time. I am using RB version 2005. It has so much built in, never mind that it compiles for Linux, Mac Classic, OSX, Windows.
Built in things I have found so far:
- MD5 function
- REALSQLDatabase... built in just like a set of functions.
- sprites
- cropping, scaling images (gif, jpg, bmp, more)
- simple 3D
- network communication in a few lines
In VB I was constantly using API functions to do advanced stuff. In RB things are included... no need to hack. Also, AFAICT, no need for a bunch of dlls in your system folder for it to work... just the executable.
Speaking of doctors working 24/7, it is greed. I watched how they operate when my dad got terminally sick. They have purposely designed a system where they take as many patients as possible, and therefore have to work crazy hours. Then, all the patients suffer because doctors are working at 30% brain capacity, walking around like zombies. Motivation: greed.
As someone who hasen't had a cell phone for 5 years, I must say this is amusing. I put a quarter in my pocket when I go out, and use it about once a year.
A little bit of effort when I was 20 has greatly paid off now that I am 37. She cooks my meals, cleans my house, lets me sleep till noon, lets me stay up till 3, makes out with me once or twice a week...
Sure, I have to take the headphones off and listen to her once or twice a day, and clean the cat box, but it's not so much to ask.
I tried two ways as a lone sys admin for 100 users of an application:
1) Browse the net all day doing as little real work as possible. Take requests from users and wait 4 hours before doing each one. Keep a list of requests and check-off things as you do them, every once in a while getting embarassed because you didn't keep your word.
2) Do all requests right away. Answer all phone messages and emails right away. Get every request done in basically the time it took plus the 15 mins it took to finish what you were doing.
Method 2 was way better. The work ethic it takes is catchy too, and the whole company benefits. Both methods take the same exact amount of work, but with method 2 you don't wait . After two years like this, I was down to spending only 25% of the time on user jobs. ie) waiting time of zero for new jobs to get started. In my spare time I trained and programmed for the users eventually going from maintaining to writting apps.
You can be a solution or a problem, its up to you.
I found it a lot easier to face it then fight it as a lone CAD Admin in a company with a 20 person IT dept. You will never win, with IT highschool + MS Training IT types. Just be happy you don't have to pork with Windows settings anymore. Never mind that the email server goes down daily.
Then when you can't fake the smile anymore, move on, before you lose your dignity. At least they can hire 3 more IT's for what you made.
I happily spent 3 years coding a custom app, then quit after minimun notice when the new IT Director blocked me from Slashdot. Good luck boys. Little do they know my bonuses were more than thier cars. HEHE.
Saying 300 million is too many is nuts. Each voter still only has to vote once. Each counter only counts one vote at a time. You just need 10x many voters in the US than in Canada. Just like the government collects 10x as much tax.
Is going electronic to save money or cheat? Hmmm.

OK how about this.. GWB has siezed control of the US in order to fight an enemy that his government created. He is using that as an excuse for his actions. The media is no help as they have been bought and lied to. When the media does rat on him, he deals with it by appearing to change course, but doesn't actually. This strategy is working with the general population. The gulag system is already in place, and if a revolt does start to happen, its leaders will be treated as terrorists because otherwise they could weaken the gov't and then the enemy can attack. Think tanks have a plan to bribe, lie or deal with any internal or external threat to this power. The last election was a threat and that was dealt with just like the next one will be. They can't just start up gas chambers, instead they use techniques like chipping away at policies word by word, and letting time heal wounds.
I don't know the motivation for this or what is really in control. Maybe it is just a cooincidence, and he will hand back the reins. Or maybe Jeb will be next in the White House.
oh dear... let me put it this way to quote a recent article of news that I guess you would not read:
"There is a name for a system of government that wages aggressive war, deceives its citizens, violates their rights, abuses power and breaks the law, rejects judicial and legislative checks on itself, claims power without limit, tortures prisoners and acts in secret. It is dictatorship."
I meant the extra S. The new USA is much like the stories I heard about the USSR as I was growing up. My grandparents fled from their. "You need that like a hole in the head" was an expression of their.
"You may be interested to know that the US has implemented laws to allow an invasion in the Netherlands, home of the international court of justice, in case an American has to appear in front of that court..."
W is just trying to save his future butt from war crime penalty. Why else would he try to appoint his friend to the Supreme Court.
Hey everybody... the USSA has been taken over by a band of terrorists. They are just good at covering it up and BS'ing. ie) "wasn't me"
One of the most addictive games for the Commodore 64 was Nukewar. It was very simple, almost text based graphics, but I loved it and miss it.
[Welcome to the USSA]
The best strategy is to accept the loss of freedom. Otherwise, it will look as though the terrorists had won, and destroyed the heart of the western world.
Time is not a dimension. Memory is in your head not the universe.

...sounds like 'burning' to me.
Can anyone calculate and post how far you have to put your hand from that to not get burned?
...guilty until proven innocent. :-(
How do you spell "whoa"

What on earth do the words "US" and "Kyoto" have to do with each other?
France alone has reason to want this system the way the USSA gov't hates them. Hey, can CANADA join the EU? Please?

"We could unleash our nuclear arsenal and flatten Europe." ...and the fallout would kill all human life on the planet most likely. Duh.
...like the USSA's economy isn't going to crash.
The USSA attacks other countries for profit and out of fear. If they attacked Europe then Europe will need its own system. Period.
