    According to your link, the Gimli Glider was caused by a sudden change to metric units. (The 767 was apparently the first plane in the fleet to use kilograms instead of pounds for fuel density specs.)

    Infocom's games (Zork, Starcross, ...) are what got me interested in computer programming.

    They solve the problem of the target computer getting owned.

    The target daemon/service will probably crash, but you won't have to rebuild the computer from backups or from scratch. This is a HUGE improvement.

    The car is not totaled, it only went off the road.

    Your pipe suggestion is interesting, but I don't think that would work for daemons like apache, where children are often created, cgi's are run, ...

    Even sendmail needs to spawn lots of children, and I'm not sure that could be done any other way.

    IIRC, Sparcs have separate write and exec flags for each page, so they wouldn't need this.

    All x86 chips (exept hammer in x86-64 mode), and most ppc chips do not have these protections in hardware.

    I KNOW TeX is great (even unrivaled) where you need exact layout of math symbols, formulae, etc., but it would have been a HUGE waste of time for me to try to learn it to write a total of a few dozen 5-10 page documents in my academic career.

    I used to use WordStar to write term papers in High School, and even it seems advanced compared to TeX.

    Of course, now I write (a little) HTML by hand, which is just as bad or worse than TeX, I suppose. :P

    Well, you could see how much bandwidth it was using.

    Rendering: moderate (wireframes) to large (textures) input, large (bitmaps) output.

    Most dist projects have small output, and usually not a lot of input (although Seti's input blocks are fairly large).

    Sounds like a http proxy to access documents in freenet would be very helpful for slashdotted stories.

    And make it simple to use. The freenet interfaces I've seen aren't simple enough for such a use.

    people aged 20-40 were disproportionately affected. (Which is why WWI soldiers were such effective carriers- the Armistice Day celebrations in 1918 were a public health disaster because everyone gathered to watch a parade of infected soldiers just back from Europe.)

    Maybe all the infected soldiers were kissing a lot of 20-40 year old women!

    And Total Commander (formerly known as Windows Commander) is a great replacement.

    Norton eventually came out with a windows version, but the viewers were VERY slow, and most of the keyboard shortcuts didn't work. TC/WC is far more like the original NC.

    Speaking of crazy people,
    One or two of my CS professors (about 5 years ago) told us that we should all be using TeX for all our schoolwork.

    I was using emacs for programming, and short docs, and MSWord or AmiPro for longer docs and papers.

    I always looked at them like they were crazy, but they didn't seem to notice.

    My dad uses WordStar in a Win2000 command window!

    He insists it's easier to use than Word or whatever.
    Easier than learning new tricks, perhaps.

    Can you "browse" all the computers connected to your DSL line? Or dialup?

    If they're all on the same subnet, then YES.

    I've done it on dialup, and on my cable modem.

    A carbine is a short rifle (barrel length under 20").

    "assault rifle" is a general term some anti-gun activists and politicians and media have created.
    In the People's Republic of California, it is (defined by law as) a semiautomatic centerfire rifle with any of the following characterics:
    a pistol grip
    a flash suppressor
    magazines holding more than 10 rounds
    folding or collapsible butt stock ...

    OK. I found it.

    Fair and balanced, naturally. An anonymous reader writes "For those of you who were unable to obtain the Microsoft propaganda about Unix, it's up at MIT."

    It wasn't written as Microsoft propaganda though.

    This is made clear by reading comments such as: MS Windows is not a real operating system (page 50 of the pdf file).

    You should be able to check that by unloading and re-loading the driver modules to see if the memory is freed.

    Another culprit might be the X server.
