BANGALORE: India plays a pivotal role in Intel's new "World Ahead" programme, says Paul Otellini on his first visit to this country, as the Chief Executive of the world's number one silicon technology player.

The $1 billion initiative, will include venture capital activities, education and community outreaches -- and research aimed at creating computing products that will make a difference to the world's `unconnected' millions.

India has a `double role' in this scenario: A $800 million war chest has already been deployed since December last year, to address educational needs, including a teacher training programme that is Intel's largest such initiative, any where in the world.

Launching the programme, here on Tuesday, Mr. Otellini said the other India-centric angle, was in the very creation of the products to fuel "World Ahead": Intel's Bangalore-based platform definition centre -- one of only four worldwide -- has designed and developed three different computing platforms: a rugged community shared PC working off a car battery; a low cost-full feature PC with an extremely small form factor that would be available within two months from five different Indian manufacturers at prices at least 20 per cent cheaper than comparable configuration and a students' notebook PC, the "ClassMate", that will be manufactured by partners worldwide next year, under the company's "Eduwise" initiative for schools.

When it came to the connectivity to reach the 850 million Indian households now untouched by computers and the Internet, Mr. Otellini saw WiMax as the way to go. "This is the best solution for low cost, high bandwidth access to telemedicine and e-learning resources", he said. He added that the company was cooperating with over 14 WiMax trials now being carried out in India by service providers like BSNL, Tata-VSNL, Bharti, Sify and others.

On Wednesday, Mr. Otellini will lead a large team at the Intel Capital CEO Summit in Mumbai when chief executives of dozens of companies in which Intel has invested worldwide, will meet to discuss opportunities in India.

Sure, in the short term people are gonna loose jobs but this "correction" has to occur at some point of time. Let us consider a scenario where IBM for instance stopped outsourcing to low cost nations like India. Keeping the cost down helps it from competition from the Infosys' and Wipros of the world. An "US only" IBM will obviously fail to compete with firms from India and China when catering to say the Lat Am or East European market. This would eventually lead to a massive collapse of the economy as American companies would find it hard to market to the other 5.5 billion on the planet . What people like you fail to realize is the global nature of trade. We are moving to an era where it does'nt matter where you come from. The world is your playground. We are moving to an era which is more like the United States of the World. We are getting there trust me. I dont think in this scenario it would be prudent for any country to be a "frog in the well". Greenspan deplores attacks on outsourcing

    January 28, 2004 09:33 IST

Amid increasing calls for protection of American industries and banning outsourcing of IT services to countries like India, China and Brazil, Chairman of the US Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan has asserted that globalisation eventually benefits all and any impediments to it would exact a heavy price.

    Outsourcing and India: Complete Coverage

"I do not doubt that the vast majority of us would prefer to work in an environment that was less stressful and less competitive than the one with which we currently engage," Greenspan said delivering an address via satellite before the British Treasury's Enterprise Conference in London on Monday.

"The cries of distress amply demonstrate that flexibility and its consequence, rigorous competition, are not universally embraced," he said.

But as consumers, most people "seem to insist" on low product prices and high quality.

"If a producer can offer quality at a lower price than the competition, retailers are pressed to respond because the consumer will otherwise choose a shopkeeper who does," Greenspan said.

He warned that the consequences of moving towards protectionism in today's globalised financial world could be unexpectedly destabilising.

"I am optimistic that we and our global trading partners will shun that path. The evidence is simply too compelling that our mutual interests are best served by promoting the free flow of goods and services among our increasingly flexible and dynamic market economies," he said.

here's the whole article Novell backs off copyright claims against SCO Juan Carlos Perez, IDG News Service 10/06/2003 08:25:59 The SCO Group Inc. has found what it says is proof that it owns all copyrights related to the Unix operating system, a claim rival Novell Inc. had contested last month and for which SCO may seek to recoup damages. SCO said Friday the proof is in an amendment to the asset purchase agreement through which SCO acquired Unix from Novell in 1995. The amendment dates from 1996. "Today we slammed the door shut on (this copyright question) and threw away the key once and for all, so this issue doesn't come up again," said Darl McBride, SCO's president and chief executive officer, in an interview. Last month, Novell said it hadn't transferred Unix's copyrights nor patents to SCO as part of their Unix purchase agreement. But in light of SCO's finding, Novell on Friday reluctantly acknowledged that the amendment "appears to support SCO's claim that ownership of certain copyrights for Unix did transfer to SCO in 1996." However, Novell reiterated its claim that it holds the Unix patents. Novell's response has left SCO's McBride dissatisfied. He wants Novell to issue a clear retraction and to own up to its incorrect claim regarding Unix copyright ownership, which left it "with eggs all over its face," McBride said. "It's not our desire to litigate with Novell, but we believe they do need to take responsibility for their improper actions and for the injury and harm they've done to us in the marketplace" by claiming SCO didn't own the Unix copyrights, McBride said. SCO's legal team is looking into the matter and may advise the company to seek money from Novell for damages, McBride said. On the question of patents, McBride said Novell's name isn't on the Unix patents, but rather AT&T Corp.'s, which is the company that first developed the operating system. The patents are enforced by the copyright holder, which in this case is SCO, McBride said. Novell didn't return calls seeking comment. At any rate, the companies are involved in nothing more than a war of words so far. Neither has raised the issue with a court. The Unix product in question is Unix System V, which is the core Unix code which SCO owns and licenses to third-parties which then use it to create their own derivative Unix versions, such as Hewlett-Packard Co.'s HP-UX, IBM Corp.'s AIX and Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Solaris. Novell, based in Provo, Utah, launched its challenge last month in order to poke holes into SCO's legal challenges against the open-source Linux operating system. SCO has made allegations that Unix code it owns has been illegally copied into Linux software, including the Linux operating system kernel. In Friday's statement, Novell again reiterated its demand that SCO present evidence to back up its allegations. SCO's McBride said the company has already begun showing its evidence to analysts, customers and other industry players. So far, SCO, based in Lindon, Utah, has only formally sued one company over Unix and Linux: IBM. In March, SCO sued IBM, seeking at least US$1 billion, alleging misappropriation of trade secrets, unfair competition, contract interference and breach of contract, in attempts to damage Unix to benefit its Linux business. Related to the case, McBride said SCO has also found evidence of AIX code having been copied into Linux software. SCO has purposefully decided not to proceed with a copyright or patent violation charge against IBM, or anybody else for that matter so far, because it believes the avenue it has taken against IBM puts it on much stronger legal ground, its executives have said. SCO also warned commercial Linux vendors of possible liabilities. It has also sent letters to about 1,500 large companies warning them they could be held liable for intellectual property violations related to their use of Linux software, and issued the same warning to commercial users in general via a press release last month. The warning has outraged and concerned many commercial Linux users. SCO has n
