As a libertarian I ask you to please reconsider school vouchers as a bad idea. School vouchers will give government officials an hook into private schools. Once people are used to receiving money from the gvment they find it hard to stop, and little by little they start requesting more and more requirements from private schools in order be "voucher" worthy, until private and public schools are the same.
My memory could be playing tricks on me... but I remember reading much more around here about Badnarik 4 years ago, and more everywhere about Harry Browne 8 years ago. I WILL vote for Barr, but give him little support otherwise. If he did change his mind on his previous positions I applaud him for it, but I find it hard to believe that someone could go from one extreme to the other so easily
But then... what other motive could he have for wanting to run as an LP candidate?
I've read both biographies of her (Nathaniel and Barbara's) and both depict her as a miserable human being, inconsistent and at points irrational: they are probably true. Yet, what I try to judge is her philosophy, not her flawed character, though I have many disagreements with her philosophy I still admire it and its been a big influence in my life.
As far as accepting SS, and "free" medical care... as a tax payer I don't have much problem with *me* getting back the money I've been giving month after month, I'd much prefer to not have to give it in the first place, but there's no inconsistency with getting at least *some* of what you deserve back and Objectivism.
Misconception about Ayn... there. You should read what she had to say on the ethics of emergencies (I think a chapter of the Virtue of Selfishness deals with that)... hardly the total bastard you make her out to be.
Essentially, she considers it moral to help another human being on the potentiality that they may be someone who shares your values... so long as the risk to yourself is manageable (don't jump in the water to save a drowning man if you can't swim).
Seriosly, my share of NASA's budget is about what it costs to take my famly to the movies, if we get popcorn and drinks. If all I get is the entertainment value of watch men go cool places, I'm well served by that budget.
As I said above, you may well be served by that budget, but forcing other people, at the point of a gun, to share your priorities is just... plain...wrong.
I AM a trekkie, and I don't mind MY tax dollars being spent on this stuff. I CAN think of a couple of things unrelated to space exploration that I do mind my tax dollars being spent on.
My question to you sir, is *why* you seem to want to spend MY tax dollars so freely. If you want space exploration and think it's a laudable goal, by all means send all your money in, I'm sure nobody will give it back.
I too am a trekkie (trekker?), I love space exploration and think that spending money on it is worth it, but where I differ with you is in putting a gun to other people's heads and asking them to share in our value system. Yes, there are worse things I can think my money could be (and is) being spent on, but that's a faulty argument for spending it on *your* pet project.
You are being dense. They didn't add more animals, they fixed the environment of the animals they have by expanding the zoo and creating new areas, doing just what you suggest. They haven't gotten around to fixing the environment of ALL the animals, not yet. And you seem to think that the resources are infinite to do everything. The zoo is a private organization, but not a profit based one! They care about the animals first, but without an attractive environment for the zoo patrons nobody would visit and there wouldn't be any money to take care of the animals. Man it makes me so mad to see the poor understanding of BASIC economics of the average person... even here, in a site where part of the intellectual elite is supposed to inhabit.
Don't be so dense. It's more like instead of fixing the old parts they're replacing them... little by little. Their funds are not infinite, public or private.
I call B.S.
Have you been to the SF Zoo lately? I'm a proud member, the zoo is very nice, the landscaping is amazing, the new African section, the new gorilla enclosure and the new Grizzly bear enclosures are awesome and much nicer than the older parts of the zoo, which are really crappy.
I've heard good arguments that Oil is NOT expensive. Compare it to the price of gold and its price hasn't changed in decades. It's the dollar that has gone down, and that's mostly because of deficit spending and irresponsible fiscal policy.
In some of the pictures all of the wire wrap is blue... It's been a while, but I remember wire wrap being available in many colors... colors you can use to code different things (i.e. address bits, using resistor scheme).
Anyway... amazing, really takes me back 20 years ago to my college days. Props
I'm in my (late) 30's now. Back when I was a kid some "old" person was making fun of us youngones because we didn't know how to use a slide rule. I went to the closet, where we kept my great grandfather's slide rule (plus his portable transit and other things) I learned how to use it, but once calculators were common enough I didn't see the point that much.

En Sovieta Rusio, Esperanto komprenas vin.
Ramen!
Dude... you absolutely rock, I love my duet and will be buying a boom soon. A very happy customer
Sad, sad, sad. I met him a couple of times at Esperanto gatherings (the Zamenhof banquet in Berkley) and he was always a welcome and witty character.

is Kumar in the movie as well?
No, he was too busy playing doctor.

Oh, crap, I don't speak Esperanto and can't type well on a Dvorak keyboard...that's not a problem, is it?
I do type Esperanto in my Dvorak keyboard (vere!)
I haven't tried the freestyle (maybe for the next one) but I positively, absolutely recommend the Kinesis Maxim I've used these for years.
As many as would lie about it to a jury...

It's beautiful, though I have only been going since around 2004. The crappy parts are all the pre-privatization sections.

Higgs, don't forget Higgs! And what about super symmetry?
That thing's been there for 40 years
Sorry, 38 (and change). I was born in '69, please don't take me into my forties before it's time.

In the words of Carl Sagan: "In order to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe."
Mi ankaux!
