Is this even legal in the USA, pointing out security hole I mean. I though the DMCA made that illegal, or was it some other silly law?
Anyway, strip down a Gnu/Linux distribution to a minimal and you'll see that the base OS has not had any major security issues. Strip down Windows and you'll still have one buggy browser to deal with, a GUI in the kernel (Pretty stupid when you think about it) and of cause you got the whole range of open ports, which of cause doesn't really do much, but still manages to pose a security risk.
Linux and Unix software isn't that much better than the Windows equivalent, but the basic operating system does have less security issues. This isn't because Linux developers are more skilled than Microsoft developers (It would be kind of weird if they where). Linux has the advantage of being just a kernel, everything else is an addon. Windows is huge and complex, even in a minimal installation, if such a thing even exists.
Microsoft can bash Linux all they want, I really don't care, it won't make me go back to Windows. I think Linux is a much better product in general, not just security wise and if Microsoft want me to think otherwise they will need to make some serious changes to Windows.
Some of the newer cards does have Linux driver, but not as good as the G400 drivers. Matrox should have keept doing what they did right with the G400 series. Working 3D, Dualhead and TVout, oh and the driver was platform independent (Yes XFree86 allows platform independent drivers).
If my G400 dies I wouldn't know what to buy, there are no videocard this good around anymore. The drivers are nothing short of excellent.
One the other hand, we don't know what will happen if we're not keeping to the Kyoto agreement. I see the main difference between the US and the rest of the western world as being willing to take a chance. The US focuses mostly on the fact that nobody can prove CO2 to be the cause of global warming. Europes main argument is that you can't prove that CO2 is not to blame. We're not willing to take the chance and tries to limit our C02 polution, just in case that CO2 is the bad guy. The US seems to don't give a damn about reducing CO2 polution until somebody proves it to be dangerous.
I don't understand how somebody care so little about the environment. If there is even the smallest chance that something could destroy our planet, we should try to avoid it, even if it is later proven to be harmless. If you're not sure, you shouldn't take the chance.
What does Wordperfect, Quattro Pro, Caldara and SCO got to do with Novell? Two of these are Corel products, one is the name of a Linux distrobution, the last one is the company behind the Linux distrobution and proud own of an obsolete operating system (Which they bought from Novell).
Novell isn't known for buying stuff, they sell it.
The good thing about this way of losing weight is that you also get bigger muscles, looks a bit nicer that way, at least when your my size. 2.05 meters look really stupid if you don't have either fat or a bit of muscles.
I really hate when I hear people say "I tried 20 different diets and im not losing weight" and the only thing they didn't try is eating right (you don't even have to eat less, just eat right) and excercising. It's not hard, it takes time, but it's not hard. Find a sport you like, most people will find something they like doing. Personally I enjoy biking and rowing.
Oh and I think that would be a public domain diet, not GNU.
Hey if the US can bomb a country for having weapons of mass destruction so can Iran. Given the US military and political logic, or lack of logic, any country could rightfully attack the US if they do not destroy the nuclear and biological weapons.
The part I really don't like is that they are still developing new weapons. They don't need anymore weapons, they don't need to be able to kill a million people in 5 minuts. What if this stuff is stolen? Developing these kinds of weapons is amazingly stupid.
Waste of time... perhaps, but if you could have some fun once in a while, nobody would what to do research. Research is just as much about doing fun stuff with expensive equipment as it is finding out important stuff. Also it is very hard not to learn something, if by doing something a pointless as this.
A Danish power company actually allows you to buy energy from windmills. Okay so the electrons you actually get might not be generated by wind power, but somewhere in the amount of energy you paid for has been generated by windmill and distributed.
Yet a not wonderful DRM tool that only works because it's not open source. The copy paste functions are being disabled for protected email... okay, so what if someone writes a client that doesn't disable copy? Oh wait, they can't, Microsoft won't tell them how. I havn't seen one DRM solution from Microsoft that would work if it was open source. Most of Microsofts security is in the restriction of the source code. Sorry but this just not good enough. Im not sure that you could write an open source DRM system, but we don't really want it anyway, so we lose nothing.
This is an even worse idea than WINE. The only thing we'll gain from this is even fewer native Linux drivers. Im sure that if this works, many hardware companies won't even consider making native Linux drivers, because users can just use DriverLoader.
Things like DriverLoader and WINE are and will be misused by companies to claim Linux compatability or make quick and low quality Linux solutions. It would be great if it where to be used only as a last resort, not as a permanent solution.
We should kill of Linuxant before they hurt anyone.
Most people didn't choose Windows, it's just what came with the box. Most people on Slashdot are aware that you can choose to install another OS, but this is hardly the case for around 90% of the rest of the world (Note; I made up the 90%).
That said I don't think that just because an OS is the most used is that same as being the most popular.
I can only agree with you on this one. Perhaps we should demand that the entire infrastructure be decommercialized instead. The voluteers have done amazingly well so fare, so why should we not continue like this, or even place more work in the hands of volunteers. These people build the Internet, let us not take it away from them.
I think most slashdotters would agree that placing the Internet in the hands of companies would only server to limite our freedom on the net. If they like it so much they will have to build their own.
Actually pr0n help reduce rapes. Danish studies showed that back in the 60'es. Yep, will the Americans and Russians where going to the moon and stuff Denmark researched pornography.
If you don't use you computer you should turn it off, or let it do some power saving. It's good for the environment.
I don't know anything about Windows and I like it that way.
Linux however: zsh (You always need a good shell) mutt - mail Mozilla Firebird - browser Emacs - Well you'll need an editor Mplayer - For watching porn Gaim - ICQ / AIM / Jabber / what ever XMMS - Music tnftp - Personally I need a good ftp klient OpenSSH - I have remote stuff to do Xclock - Need to know the time
Guess that's about it, not including all the more technical stuff and things like window managers. Also I assume that Xterm ins't a choice.
The laws is abit tricky on the whole EUCD thingy. You can legally break copy protection if it prevents you from viewing DVDs on Linux e.g.- I guess the same would be true for DRM. You can't break copy protection to make copies of DVDs and sell them however.
Basicly it is a question about having players available on all platforms I think. Im no legal expert but I think it means that if you can't listen to a cd , because of the copy protection, then you can break it. But Im not sure.
>Why must nations always get involved and turn space exploration into an Us vs. Them contest?
In this case because it is the US vs. us (This make very little sense, "us" is "them" if you're American). The US don't seem all that happy about Europe building Galileo... WHY?
What we don't like to that fact that GPS is controlled by the US military. Would you feel good about the French controlling technology that the US Army uses in combat? What if we (Europe) controlled the GPS system and turned it off during the war i Iraq, just because they didn't like what you where doing? That wouldn't be a whole lot of fun now would it?
Satellite navigation is to important a tool to be placed in the hands of just one nation, especially when the nation controlling it is losing credibility. Remember that Galileo was almost cancelled. Personally I believe that the US foreign politics is the main reason that Galileo is getting the funding it needs. Europe no longer trust the US as much as we use to, and that is a very bad thing.
That and having access to a Linux box is worth more than hacking Windows telnet or something.
If you want to use the server you hacked / cracked to attack someone else, then Linux is more useful than Windows. It's about getting a shell account, Windows for some reason doesn't have those.
Most Windows attacks comes from worm and viruses, while Linux actually gets hacked the old fashion way. More skilled Linux system administrators would solve the Linux security issues, but Windows need better code. At least that's how I see it.
But the article sucks because they don't deal with percentages. I would be more interested in knowing the percentage of Linux servers hacked vs. the percentage of hacked Windows servers.
Agree, blame the parents. I however don't agree with your three points. Children should never be exposed to weapons and they therefor doesn't need to be taught gun safety. Also parents don't need to know what their children are doing all the time.
What parents do need to do is teach they children how to behave and how to interact with other people. Believe it or not, alot of children does have these basic skills. I think the main problem is that we let anyone become a parent. To many people simply doesn't take the time needed to bring up their children. Many doesn't even seem to care. Over the summer parents and teachers in Denmark discussed who has the job of bring up the children, many seems to think that it's the job of the teachers. Well it's not, you can't teach a child who doesn't respect other people. I think you should demand a certain level of upbring before letting a child go to school.
Of cause children are influenced by films and games if they don't possess basic human skills. If you must sue somebody, sue the parents for not bringing up they children properly.
Doesn't most companies already do this. I seen a lot of CDs with a notice saying something like "This compact disc does not fully conform with Philips Red Book specifications" or "This product features copy control technology. It is intended for use in standard home CD players and may not play on other devices, especially computer drives."
Now what would be create is if they use really large letters when writing these labels. You can barely read them as they are now.
Try doing a traceroute on google.co.uk or any other international Google. I think you will find that you end up somewhere in the US regardless of which Google you choose.

Being found by the RIAA is normally not students main concern. Being found by the university system administrators is worse. RIAA makes you pay alot of money, the university will kick out.
I don't know how it works else where but at my university (Aalborg, Denmark) the threat of being kick out is normally enough to keep students from doing anything illegal.
And don't you think MIT has some clever way of finding people ? I'm sure they do.
Linus does not deserve this. This is totally uncalled for, SCO is just being evil.
And I kind fail to see what Stallman has got to do with all this. Perhaps they just didn't like him.
Is this even legal in the USA, pointing out security hole I mean. I though the DMCA made that illegal, or was it some other silly law?
