I agree. Combine paper ballots marked in pencil with optical scanners to count the votes and you have a near-perfect voting system. Notice I said near-perfect. Nothing is ever going to be perfect.
Pushing technology into places it doesn't belong is stupid. We have enough technology in our voting system. Remember what has happened in our schools. Little Johnny can surf the net and create neat PowerPoint presentations, but he can't read at his grade level.
The battery pack for my Nikon 5700 uses 6 rechargeable NiMH batteries. I can take 200+ photos with one set of batteries. Using flash lowers that to about 150 photos. I usually take an extra set with me just in case, but I've never had to use them. I'm well pleased with the batteries.
Just a few years ago I owned a simple 35mm camera that used a non-rechargeable proprietary battery. It was expensive and good for only a few rolls of film. Yeah, things have improved since then.
With optical scanned ballots there are no holes punched, so there are no chads - pregnant, dimpled, or hanging.
There are far more recounts than most of you imagine. The one most people think of is the one in Florida in 2000, but I've seen several since then in state and local elections.
Recounts are mandatory in close elections. Therefore, we need a hard copy of the ballot, not just a bunch of ones and zeros.
Not necessary. It's very easy to tell when a politician is lying - his (or her) lips are moving. Your flashing light would never quit flashing on C-SPAN.
That most cetainly would work, but it would probably blind anybody who happened to be looking. Even in the rare cases where they weren't blinded, they would be scarred for life.
You may be right. Some XM channels already carry commercials. When the other ones start playing commercials, I'll end my subscription.
XM is pushing to reach a million subscribers. I don't think they'll change until they have a lot more than that. It would be very easy for me to just turn them off and listen to AM and FM.
Only difference is that I tell friends and family about AVG - it's free.

NPR tends to be in favor of more government; I'm in favor of less. I'm not a Republican; I'm a Libertarian.
I believe that whatever situation you are in you got there through your own choices, good or bad. A lot of "poor" people made "poor" choices in regards to education, family planning, and use of "drugs". I'll help anybody who needs help, but I REFUSE to support deadbeats. Yes, they are out there in droves. They are the "world owes me" crowd. If you'd get out and about a little more, you'd see for yourself.

I'm one of those people who spend all day long in my vehicle. I listen to radio for traffic reports, news, weather, and even music. I have XM radio, too. When I'm working at night I listen to George Noory (Art Bell's replacement) on XM. Got an MP3 of Coast to Coast AM handy?
I rarely listen to music on FM - too much of the same thing over and over; XM is the best for music of all kinds. FM could disappear tomorrow and I'd never know it.
AM is great for newstalk and traffic.
NPR sucks ass no matter what time of day it is - too biased toward the left. (That may get me modded down here on slashdot.)
Exactly. We are looking for weapons when we should be looking for terrorists. That's what Israeli security does. But we are so afraid of being accused of "racial profiling" that we will never be any safer.
"It will simply prevent consumers from illegal piracy, from mass distribution over the Internet, which is the problem with the music file sharing," Kenneth Ferree, head of the FCC's media bureau, said in a telephone interview.
Well, thank God they aren't preventing legal piracy!
I'd be wearing a spacesuit. The scooter is so fast that even on a trip to another star system I'd have enough oxygen.
There is a model available with a pressurized cockpit, but I can't afford such luxuries.

Cold Fusion? Nah, I'm waiting for some zero-point energy batteries. Maybe then I'll have something that will power my intergalactic Segway scooter.
but frankly, the change from putty-colored to plaid just doesn't work for me. Maybe if I changed the other color to blaze orange?
Do away with all traffic lights, stop signs, and speed limits.
Can you imagine how safe you'd have to drive where there were no traffic controls? You'd really have to pay attention at intersections!
Mod this "funny" if you will, but it is a serious proposal.

using paper ballots that are scanned? You can have the results instantly and the ballots are locked inside the box in case of a recount.
Just because the technology of touchscreen voting is considered "cutting edge" doesn't make it better.
One of my ancestors was involved on the other side. You Brits may have heard of William Waad. He "coaxed" a confession out of Mr. Fawkes. :-)
One of these days I need to take a vacation and visit you good people.

Doctors, on average, are a conservative bunch. Too many times they have been stung by lawsuits that are totally unwarranted.
Patients are quick to demand unproven treatments and are just as quick to sue if the treatments don't work.
