I agree with nearly everything you said, except the Chris Pirillo part. Chris pushed Windoze so much that sometimes I thought he was on Microsoft's payroll.

I guess the most irritating thing has to be the last one. Either the camera is pointing the wrong way, or they have some captioning at the bottom of the screen so that what they're trying to show is blocked. They never have got it right, maybe never will.

Why bother with expensive LEDs? And only a 40 percent savings on power?

I've changed all the light bulbs in my house to flourescents. The compact fluorescents work great. The ones comparable to a 60 watt incandescent use only 13 watts and the ones comparable to a 100 watt incandescent use only 26 watts.

Sure, the lifetimes aren't as long as LEDs, but the cost is a LOT less and they're available nearly everywhere now. I got mine from Lowes and WallyWorld and now the power company loves me.

It's never affected me in any way. I just like the taste of coffee. I never drink coffee on the weekends and have gone more than a month without drinking any at all. I couldn't tell any difference. I can even drink a cup at night and then go right to sleep. I must be totally insensitive to caffeine.

What scares me is that the schools are actually teaching and using PowerPoint!

  11. Re:If my boss did this, on Plow Operators Object to GPS Tracking System · · Score: 1

Actually, in my line of work, nobody knows where I'm supposed to be. I work all over town, sometimes moving and sometimes sitting in one place for a long time. The ideal vehicle to attach the tracking device to would be one that mimics my movements. As long as it didn't leave the city nobody would be the wiser.

I do know that if my boss ever gets the brilliant idea of using the damned things, he won't have to fire me - I'd quit. I'm not a slacker; I do a full day's work for a full day's pay. I'm opposed to anybody knowing where I am all the time. As long I get the work done that has to be done, how I go about it and what pace I set is my own business.

We have some employees who work like hell for four days, doing more than is required each day. Then they can goof off on Fridays. They've done exactly what was required for them to do in a week. Nobody has ever complained.

For some jobs we do, we're given 2 to 3 times as much time as it really takes to complete, so sometimes I get way ahead. I've even told my boss that if I get ahead, don't be surprised to find me at CompUSA. He just laughed and said make the job fit the hours we're given to do it - no more, no less.

  12. If my boss did this, on Plow Operators Object to GPS Tracking System · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'd find a way to remove the tracking device and attach it to a taxi, a bus, or a police car. I don't operate a snow plow, but I am in a company truck all day.

A 4-drawer plastic storage unit from WalMart for storing printer stuff. A drawer each for ink carts, plain paper, photo paper, and labels.

Another slightly smaller one for thin manuals and warranty info; never know when you might need them.

A multi-drawer container (like the ones you store nuts and bolts in) for small parts like cable ties, rails, nuts and bolts, etc..

An old used chest-of-drawers for larger parts (stored in their anti-static bags), CDs, larger cables, larger manuals, hard drives, old motherboards, etc..

A table behind me for old cases, monitors, and printers; the plastic storage units mentioned above are under it, too.

Yeah, it's a total mess. I never throw away anything I think I may use again, but I work on systems for friends and family, so I need all those spare parts!

  21. Re:Recipe music on Decoding the Algorithm for Pop Music · · Score: 1

Hey, I resemble that remark. We boomers are not all like that, thank God. I'm 50 and you'd be surprised what music I have in my collection. If it's good, it will stand the test of time. There are a lot of artists and songs from 40 years ago that were crap then and they are still crap today and nobody ever buys the stuff, but the good ones keep selling.

    Mozart is still outselling Salieri.

  22. Re:Recipe music on Decoding the Algorithm for Pop Music · · Score: 1

Exactly. I've always called it "cookie cutter music" because they go by a set recipe. So all the boy bands sound just alike and all dance bands sounds just alike. The reason that the practice is so hard to end is because the generations change every few years. You get a whole new batch of musically ignorant 14-year olds who think the crap is the newest, best thing.

If I hear a song on the radio and I can't tell who it is, I change the station. Real talent stands out from the rest. If only the recording execs would see it that way...

  24. Why I have a personal website on Why Personal Websites Matter · · Score: 2, Interesting

While I agree that a lot of personal websites are horrid, I have one under my own domain name for the following reasons.

It's for family and friends to keep in touch. There's a calendar there to remind them of family events and birthdays. Kinda like Central Headquarters for my family.

There's a page for my high school's alumni to stay in touch without going to classmates.com.

As long as I pay the bill, I have a permanent email address. And I can add/remove/change email addresses at will.

Yes, there are family photos there. They are not there for /. readers. They are for sharing with family and friends. Wait until you have grandkids - you'll understand.

I also have genealogical information on the site. Personal websites are invaluable for researching your family tree. If you knew my name, you could google it to find out who my great-great-great-great-grandfather was. I've found relatives I didn't know I had from all over the country.

It may truly suck bigtime in the eyes of some, but it's my site and I'll design it the way I want. I'm not stupid enough to post the url here. Who wants to be slashdotted?

  25. Re:The ficus on Gore Vidal Savages Electronic Voting · · Score: 1

Yes, it was a pity because the Ficus would have done a better job.

I've always wanted a "none of the above" choice when I vote. If "none of the above" got a majority of the votes, the election would have to be done again with none of the original candidates allowed to run. And, if nobody qualifies to run in the second election, the office goes vacant for four years.
