Well put. I think you abstracted the issue of underage sex out of the problem quite well. "Underage" sex is quite debateable (and rightfully so). In the 'states I assume your parents having sex would have been illegal (her being under 18 and him over), whereas in canada it would not have been illegal.. who's right? It's debateable but it doesn't matter for this issue. Myspace is not responsible for the actions of these individuals, this could have happened via chat groups, icq, irc, message boards.. basically any online communication where you can meet random people. At the same rate "the internet" isn't responsible either. I'm sure one or two "hookups" occured due to party lines (I'm too young to have ever experienced a shared phone line) or via other communication means. I worked at a nightclub and there would be the odd underage girl that would get in (due to convincing id) and I'd bet most of them went home with a guy (especially the ones with a toothbrush in their purse).
My point being: You can't blame one medium for the actions of people. The technology doesn't cause it, it may make it easier, but in the end it is the people. In the lines of, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." If I really wanted to kill someone, I don't need a gun. A gun makes it easier, but there are plenty of ways to go about it.
If you don't want your daughter to fall prey to an older man, then teach them about sex. Teach them about how sleazy men can be, and how often someone that looks eager to meet them just wants sex and will not provide what they are looking for (attention and affection). The issue is that parents push all education on the school system and don't talk to their children about sex and relationships then go and put the blame on anyone or thing other than themselves.
I'd like to also add that there are pleny of socket 939 boards with AGP, and s939 won't be gone for a while yet, so it is possible to have an up-to-date processor with an AGP slot.
Also socket 754 chips are available upto an A64 3700+, which should be good for most games in the near future. Most socket 754 boards are AGP (although you can get PCI-e ones now).
But doesn't centrino refer to the combination of chipsets by Intel? Ergo the laptop would have Intel wireless and Intel graphics. Do Intel graphics support directx 9? In my experience (my current laptop), their onboard graphics are really weak (as in I'd prefer a tnt2).
I also used a newer gateway recently with a dual-core intel desktop chip and onboard intel x-treme graphics. It was so xtreme it crashed trying to run openGL screen savers (really slick screen savers).
Well currently linux (ubuntu in particular) supports more of my desktop hardware than Windows xp x64. Actually it supports all my hardware that xp sp2 supports but the drivers seem more stable (any issues I've had with windows being stable lately has been 3rd party drivers).
The area that is still lagging behind is wireless drivers, but that is fixed by buying something that is supported (takes some research but not a lot of $$$). The broadcom wireless in my cheapo laptop works under ndis wrapper, but not as well as I'd like.
I definitely agree with you- our FAQ is seriously dated and needs a spitshine on many questions
So Slashdot isnt' currently being served off pentium-3 600 web servers with one Xeon sql server?
That is one portion I'd like to see updated, or even an article on the hardware of slashdot. What slash runs on (both hardware and software, I know about slashcode, but what distro's are being used etc). Also some data on how many pages are served, how many queries the database(s) handle and so on. I know I'm not the only reader that is interested.
I have a good tip on how to NOT clean your keyboard.. Don't pull all the keys off, getting the dirt out may be easier but getting the keys back on is very labourous (especially if you have a keyboard with a non-standard layout). So I'd recomend taking a picture first.
Also I made the mistake of soaking my keys a little too long in a solution of diversol and water (I work in a home brew shop). Many of my keys became illegible (which made getting them back on even more difficult). The plus side is I got a 'das keyboard' for free.
Oh 20 minutes contact with the diversol will kill most bacteria, so your keys will be safe to eat off of.
And for the clueless, hops are what are used to flavour and bitter the beer (flavours generally being grassy, piney or in some cases, like cascade, citrusy.. bitter is the bite). Considering the amount of hops used in Bud and Budlight most american drinkers won't reap any medical benefits (they use very small quatities of hops).
For something really hoppy look for an IPA (I prefer an IBU >50..IBU is international bittering units many producers will advertise how many IBU's their beer is.). Of course most beer guzlers don't enjoy bitter beers(well the north american variety at least). Even styles that have a lot of hope flavour and little bitterness (pilsner urquell?) don't seem very popular in North american.
My favorite beer right now? A double IPA called "insomniac" is probably my local fave (9% alch and enough hops to knock your socks off).
I could swear there were way more posts than there are currently (36 at time of this post), and a bunch of threads I was following disapeared in the last 30minutes - hour (man how coding C can make you lose track of time).
What happened to the normal ways of wasting money? With the huge self raise for BC politicians that almost happened I thought we were moving more towards the rest of the world in how our gov't wastes money. I thought the amazingly expensive (and failed) gun registry was somewhat embarrasing yet proudly Canadian, but this is rediculous..
We should be wasting money on things more Canadian like protecting beavers and making backbacon/canadian bacon a regional name, so that it is only truely "canadian bacon" if it came from the great white north.
We don't need to worry about aliens anyhow.. there is no way they can stand up to our diesel subs and amazing space tech inovation (we'll grab them with a Canadarm!).
Cell phone ring tones are about identifying you to the rest of the world
In that case shouldn't they be paying me to advertise? On that note: You'd have to pay me a lot more money than $2.49 US to have the latest 50cent tune as my ringtone/ringtune.
Of course when I was doing some rep stuff for a wireless company in Canada I did dl quite a few tunes since they were "free" (didn't cost me anything).. nothing turns heads like a 25 year old male with a Britney Spears "ringtune" (*walks away humming toxic).
there are still many,
many useful usenet groups with reasonable signal and not much spam.
Exactly, maybe get rid of the binary groups as well to save bandwidth (although that bandwidth will quickly be used up in torrent traffic so what's the difference?).
If I want to buy computer parts cheap locally I check the local groups first (mylocal).buysell and can usually get what I want within a couple days. There are usually at least 10 real posts a day on my local site (city of 300K) and only about 1 spam (and that's w/o anything killfiled). Plus the community formed online is pretty warm, people get to know the regulars and oftopic post for help are usually warmly greeted.
If I need help or advice on my current brew (I brew beer and wine), I'll post to a brewing group and get plenty of opinions (some not so useful but that's usenet and the internet in general for you). Some of the brewing groups are very active and have some useful info posted on them (thank you denny conn one of the most prolific posters I've seen).
I would argue that losing usenet is losing culture and that the useful groups have a good s/n ratio and have more useful information than non. I fear that many other ISP's (shaw, which is probably going to be bought out by rogers at some point anyhow) will cut their support too. This is a step backwards in my opinion, next thing you know they won't be offering email since they are soon going to start spouting "Pretty much everybody uses free webmail, so why should we use the server space and bandwidth to provide a duplicate service? We now no longer give you email or webspace and the price is the same."
That is scary, because in a monopoly-like environment (much of rural Canada only has one choice if any for a non-dialup ISP) the providers can dictate services and price.
They are only breaking "driver" compatibility for legacy hardware. However hardware makers have started (last summer) to write the 64 bit drivers for their hardware, so I wouldn't worry to much about that.
That is a big deal for some of us since hardware makers are not up to speed yet. I run Windows XP professional x64 edidition on my desktop a long side of Ubuntu (64bit). Guess which has better driver support? For the first timee in a long time (for me at least) Windows is not the answer.. in fact windows x64 reminds me of linux 3 years ago as far as drivers go. e
Here's my short list of problems: -Fujifilm has stated that they do not have a driver for my camera and will not offer one.
-Hauppage doesn't offer 64bit drivers yet (supposeably by Jan but they've been promissing drivers for almost a year).
-My M-audio soundcard is only supported by a beta driver (probably the same one I tested with the beta release of x64).
-The driver for my epson printer was not available from the Canadian site, be I had to be directed to the US site (minor nitpick, but come on, either update all your sites or have all the drivers on one site and link to it).
The only thing that seemed to be "easy" was my nvidia video card.
I don't think that is a realistic situation. Does anyone send a resume in.doc format? If they do they are stupid since you have no idea if the person receiving it will be able to open it. Even if the potential employer has Word and you have Word it's not guaraanteed to look correct or even open (ie you have Office 2003 and they are still running 97 to save costs).
I send "important" documents in pdf if formatting is important (ie where plaintext or rtf won't do) and from the amount of pdf's I receive I assumed most people do that. On a rare occasion I could be required to fill out an excell sheet or the likes but I haven't had a complaint yet using OO to do so (the web software for that company seems to be picky about any browser other than IE however:P).
Exactly.. that's one of my peeves other than the then/than mixups.
It's also had the affect of providing some interesting research on study patterns
Ah, no.. something has an effect which could affect something or someone.

As someone who has installed OpenBSD before, I can tell you, it's really not that difficult.
I definitely agree. The install is easier than most linux installs and a lot quicker (well the minimal system is pretty small, but it's all you need for a router). Within an hour you could have a box setup and have PF working thanks to the FAQs and guides.. heck the man pages are even VERY well written.
Exactly. Since I started using CSS my sites have become much smaller. One css file to cache for the pages, and a lot less html. A lot of the redundant data is pushed into your CSS file so you are not duplicating it in the html.
