Is having 1 global ID really wise? It sounds like a single point of failure to me. And do you really want the same ID across all sites? i.e. Do you want to be able to be tracked across multiple sites, especially those that cater to different audiences? And with social engineering, if you divulge your personal info to a phisher for one site, he would then be able to use it for all other sites.
Call me a bit concerned, but I have unique IDs & passwords across all sites (social networking, blogs, financial, political, etc.) There are free user ID/password management software so you don't have to memorize every ID and password.
I will never understand the concept of putting so many spaces between the "ifs", the braces, the "elses", etc. How can you read the code if it's so spaced out? I also get rid of a lot of local variables by using the results of a method as the input to another method, etc. It can reduce the lines of code to where you only have to decipher 1 line.

After I first started using ergonomic split-key keyboards over a decade ago, I can't go back to the old-style "bust your wrists" keyboard. After 5 min of typing, my wrists hurt.
So, no, Das Keyboard is NOT the best keyboard ever made. Microsoft's Natural Ergonomic 4000 is still the best IMNSHO.
That's why I downgraded back to 2.0. The URL bar still contained my, um, NSFW sites. The recent bookmark/sites visited also still contained those sites. The Ctrl+Shift+Del (Clear Private Data) doesn't work for me in FF3 but always worked in FF2.
Didn't you uninstall FF2 and completely delete the 3 main dirs (program files/mozilla, docs & settings/apps/mozilla, docs & settings/local files/apps/mozilla)? I did that and FF3 installed just fine. (Just don't forget to backup your bookmarks.html)
The URL bar is so damn annoying in 3.0. I start to type in my URL and all of these suggestions appear in a drop-down box. To make it worse, I can't delete/clear/erase those suggestions. So I just accidentally went to a, um, NSFW website and now I can't erase it!
And the new bookmark "feature" is a pain. I used to just backup bookmarks.html. Now I need to export it from the Bookmark window to an HTML file.
Nah, I'll stick with 2.0 until these bugs are worked out.
The population has exploded in the past century for one and only one reason - PEAK OIL. For every calorie of food that we consume it takes about 10 calories of energy to make. It is not sustainable to expend more calories than you consume. Through the use of oil, we have been able to have machines do the manual labor of farming. Through the use of natural gas, we have created fertilizers to grow crops. Take away the fossil fuels and our farming capacity dramatically drops.
Industrializing 3rd world nations will only hasten the global die-off. Look at the HUGE impact on commodities that China & India have place since they industrialized. If China was to consume like we do in the US, it would take 7 planet earths. A real good DVD to watch is A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash.
I strongly urged all/.'ers to read The Oil Drum blog, especially the daily DrumBeat's.
This is/. I think the saying, "Beggers can't be choosers" applies here. If she's cute, seriously, who gives a shit what she believes? As long as you can go out and have fun it's all good. I have seen some guys, however, get all caught up in their... smugness... and miss out on meeting & dating some cute girls.
Seriously guys, if the girl looks anything like Kelly from The Big Bang Theory would you really have a problem dating her?

Microsoft To Drop HD DVD

From some of the forums I've read, Blueray rips can be up to 27GB. Even with high-speed broadband, that's still several hours or more to legally download a movie. All that bandwidth will cost the distributer a lot of money. So I'm assuming they will compress the hell out of it (like HD-lite) and you'll see artifacts. Then what's the point of HD if there's a bunch of macroblocking, etc.? Plus, legal downloads are DRM'd to your PC. What if I want to transfer it to my media PC in the living room? Or if I want to watch a late night movie in my room? No, I don't think online disto can compete with the quality and "freedom" of a physical disc.
If you've ever worked in a big corporation you know the golden rule: CYA (Cover Your Ass). That is accomplished by Reply-To-All so that EVERYONE is in the loop and NOONE will complain that they were left out of the picture, wasn't kept informed, etc., etc. Yeah, it's a sign of micromanaging. Welcome to my corporate hell.
Yes, I know that. Again, so what? If you have XXX units in your inventory and need to clear them, then lower the price. Who's to say HD-DVD is obsolete? All the media ads I read says that HD-DVD is great! Why should the store owner take a total loss when he can dump his inventory at a lower price? The consumer gets a better deal. If it's obsolete hardware then that's the consumer's problem for not doing their homework before buying a product.
So a product is being sold at a discount and somehow that "victimizes" the weak? Tough shit if the consumers don't know any better. It's simple economics: as the price drops, more units are sold. I have never heard of consumers complaining about lower prices.
If it bothers you so much, then you pay for an ad in your local newspaper warning others of the "danger" of buying electronics at a discount. Seriously, why do people even care what others are doing with their own money? It's called free will.
That's why people are switching to other ways to watch the shows they like. I've been recording the following NBC shows in HD so I can skip all of the advertising: Chuck, Heroes, Bionic Woman, The Office, and Friday Night Lights. It's usually 19 minutes of advertising and 41 minutes of actual show. Is it any wonder people are tuning out? And during the show, they keep showing "snipes" saying "you are now watching xxx, stay tuned for yyy," etc.
The revenue model for these studios will definitely have to change. People don't want to spend 32% of their time watching advertising. And I don't know what that new model is. If I did, I'd be a gazillionaire.
Yes, but the problems with that new technology related to items that benefited the consumer. Branching, random access, etc. all enhanced the consumer's experience. However, the problem with these BluRay players is not related to technology which will increase our enjoyment of the product we paid for. Instead, the problem lies in the technology which restricts our Fair Use of the product we paid for. That's a huge difference.
HD DVD isn't region coded, so you can buy a disk from anywhere in the world and watch it.
With the right firmware you can make your PC DVD player region-free. And there are several DVD rip programs out there that can remove the region flag as well as jump to the main menu upon playback (i.e. skip all the crap and get to the movie). I play all my movies from my HTPC.
I really like watching movies and was excited about purchasing a BluRay and/or HD-DVD player when they came out. But I decided to wait and see and have the companies work out the kinks. Well it's over a year later and there are still problems. When the main focus is not on enhancing the paying customer's experience, but on padding the pockets of the media execs, this is what you get. I should be #1 in their minds. After all, it doesn't matter how much DRM they put in their product if no one buys it.
So, these media firms have lost a faithful, paying customer. I refuse to buy all of their DRM'd HD crap. Since my HTPC upscaler looks almost as nice as HD, I'll just stick with regular DVDs until, if ever, the DRM crap is done away with. And since you can also record broadcast HD shows, there's no need to shell out another $30 to get the HD-version of a show compared to the regular SD DVD version.
I'm considering purchasing a PS3 mainly as a Blu-Ray player! I could care less about playing video games as I just don't have the time nor the interest in it. However, I do have an extensive DVD collection and HT setup (HDTV) and am looking to upgrade to HD for movies. From all of the reviews I've read, the PS3 is actually one of the best Blu-Ray players out there.
Well, seeing that this is/. and the topic is how smart guys aren't getting any, I am leaning towards the former: hot XXX girl virgin/lesbian love.
Here on campus, I think the only virgin girls are the fat, ugly ones. I mean every other girl is always getting hit up by the guys, some a lot more than others, but even the "plain Jane" looking ones have b/f's. Of course, the only women in engineering are the aforementioned fat, ugly ones. Maybe I should change my major to Studio Art. (You did RTFA, right?:-)
Uh dude, WTF? Let me rephrase that - to be a guy here on campus with 30,000 other students, half of them young women, and still a virgin. Just what exactly were you thinking?
As I read this article, the very first thing that popped into my head was privacy issues. We've all ready how the NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. accessed AT&T's phone records, etc. I wouldn't put it past them if they are already accessing and data-mining Yahoo! and Google E-mail.
The service gives users who e-mail documents between home and work computers an alternative way to access their files on the go. Users can keep files private or share them with people they know or with anyone on the Web.
When I need to take some of my work home with me to finish it up, I always use TrueCrypt to create a volume and use AES-Twofish-Serpent with Whirlpool. Since it is free, I recommend that everyone here use it. You have nothing to lose if you do and if you don't - you don't want to be in the news as the employee who lost another database of customer records.
Sadly, "in this day and age (tm)," you need to be vigilant of all of your data as everyone from hackers to governments want to see what you are doing.
Take a look at my other reply. I pointed out that I liked Aliens (directed by James Cameron) over the original Alien (directed by Ridley Scott who also directed Blade Runner).
I suspect foul play...
Right. (seriously)
