The problem was that it cost money:P I always wanted to mess around the code on a simple, yet an operating system you could DO something with.
Don't say "Linux!". Have you SEEN how many lines of code that is? I just a lowly hobbyist.
I doubt the thieves were going for THAT disk, but I am curious to know if there is enough gold on a disk to make it worth it? Is a gold master just covered with gold, or is it solid gold?
I wonder if they insured it. Be quite a boost of they insured it for 10k, but then I don't know if you can insure it in the UK.
I have to agree with you. Allot of the problems that CAN be fixed just aren't because of tech's inexperience.
I should know. While I am familiar with the registry and how it works, I don't know how or what to fix in it. Its like a mechanic who can't figure out why the car's engine isn't working. From his point of view, yanking out the old one, and putting in a new engine that he knows works is the best course of action.
I mean with all the problems I have been hearing about how some county's voting problems vary from county to county.
Here in Texas, we have communities hand counting, some use optical scanning, and some even used the punch cards. We don't have to worry about shipping the votes though the Pony Express anymore, so why has there never been any effort to make standardized, open standard machines for everyone? Is it just because the states don't want to lose that power?
Yes, there is something to say, and that is: "real clusters, used for real work, do not use over-the-counter parts". I wasn't aware of this either, until I got into the business recently. If a drive or a DIMM goes bad, you're not going to Best Buy to replace it. You will contact your vendor, whom is paid a lot of money to support your hardware, and they will fix it for you.
Yea but what happens in 5 years when they won't support your system anymore? Or that their support contracts spike up to 200% in costs?
I am not saying being proprietary isn't bad. You get good support, the system works great, and you don't have to worry about having a large support staff. I just don't think its a good idea to spend the money on it on a small
scale.
Those XD1 systems Cray sells is VERY nice, but is it really better than a rack
mount of 14 Atholon 64, with parts that cost half as much?
PS- Not that Cray tells you what ANYTHING costs on their website, just assuming.
You have to remember this was Russia, one of the heights of misinformation.
I doubt the Russian people, not even the firefighters, even knew of the true dangers of nuclear reactor. Unless those firefighters were trained nuclear techs, they were
property ordered to take those parts out. Though I am not saying they weren't doing heroic things, I just wish they had the choice and the
knowledge before hand.
I mean the firefighters at 9/11 might of not known the building was going to
collapse, they DID however know the dangers going up those buildings to help people.
I wonder if its costing Microsoft or IBM anything in legal costs anyway. Don't they have their own lawyers on the payroll? If you think about it, IBM can just rub SCO to the ground, but they are fighting this in the courts. Even, on the off chance they lose, its still like having a giant standing up for the little guy (Linux).
I wonder if its costing Microsoft or IBM anything in legal costs anyway. Don't they have their own lawyers on the payroll?
This artical decided it for me! All hail king Jobs! Long live the King!
On a more serious note, I REALLY do. All the evidence shows that this company isn't going to go down soon.
How can a company ever get worth so much without anything? I was fascinated by this during the internet boom.
I mean hell, if the company is worth $50 a share with no assets, isn't it worth the same amount at $1 a share with no assets?
It just seems to me that all needs to happen is that the investors get scared, and pull out. Since its a cooperation, no one is personally responsible if the investors get chicken, because on paper, and from notes, it "looks" like it was trying.
Hell, $300,000 on development costs? It properly didn't cost more than 50k for the prototype units, and they property used off the shelf components for it. That value must include a year or two wages of some people working on it. I would bet its two people in a shack that built this, as the labor costs alone would make most of it.
I just want to know, after all this ranting, is where IS that $100M? If the company is WORTH that, don't they have to have assets that you can sell at $100M?
PS - I bet $5 they will sell this banana off before the end of this year, or at least the CEO will cash out.
Though, being a Linux noob, somebody properly thought of this already.
But come on, look at the syntax! With a little work, this thing could replace even tsch!
Bah, who am I kidding, what right minded programmer would code such a thing:P br
The writing was on the wall a LONG time before they announced it. If they give you a free month and the FULL version that cheap (Or buy a bundled package with 5 other games for 19.99)
I mean hell, when someone BUNDLES a MMOG in a economy pack, its just time to move on.
Somehow, the thought of rather having a bunch of LS240's for all my machines, just doesn't appeal, compared with the network I already have, which would take about 5 seconds to transfer that much data.
No joke. Becides, with 52X CD-R drives out there, takes less than 2 min to burn 600megs, not to mention the cost of pennys!
PS: Figured out why my posts are malformed, I accedently set it to HTML Formated
>Do you have a Unix-like (got to be careful, SCO
>might sue me!:) machine at work that you can try
>to erase this disk with?
>With something like dd bs=512 if=/dev/zero
>of=/dev/rfd0c
Thought of that. We have a program called clearHDD we use on computers to wipe hard drives. It just wipes the first few cylnders. Since the LS240 was a IDE device, when we loaded the dos drivers for it, it seemed to work.
But no go, trying to format there, or on another drive didn't work. That was our thrid try btw:)
ClearHDD is a dos program and it basicly does unchecked zero writes to the hard disk, so we arn't even sure it was writen.
The only thing I can figure is that the LS240 might double the amount of tracks. Thing is that it would mount under dos, but we could't make the disk without windows.
Ah well, might pick one up on ebay. Been looking for a LS120/240 drive to replace my floppy.
Thing is that we tried it with three seperate disks, and while the data was able to be read again, evey time we tried to format them in a normal floppy drive, it would come back with 90% bad sectors.
Though we really didn't have much time to play with it, only messed with it for about an hour before it went on the floor.
I forgot a few line breaks in there.
Grr, I do a quick google and find out that you can download it free here.
But then whats the point if Minix is free anyway?
The problem was that it cost money :P I always wanted to mess around the code on a simple, yet an operating system you could DO something with.

I mean its made of plastic, but it looks like it might be one of those rubber types.
I would also like to know WHEN it showed up. I mean, really, who would miss something like that.
SOMEONE has to be getting paid to stare at that camera, or at least review it every day.
Didn't IBM already ask that when the requested the code?
I bet money there is STILL going to be a monthly fee anyway.
But atleast if you buy this thing, they can't sue you for screwing with it.
... or is terrorism winning?
It certainly feels like evey time we get a false positive we panic.
I mean really, wasn't that the point of going to mars in the first place?
I mean sure, its a long way to just put a multi-million dollar jeep, but damnit we came this far we might as well do a running jump into that thing!
I mean with all the problems I have been hearing about how some county's voting problems vary from county to county.

I mean I did reserve $10 on it in 1999, so in theory I still can get it redeamed...right?
Whats going to be the theme this time? How can you go from "Happy"(Jak) to "Angst"(Jak II) to what?
Not to say I didn't like Jak II, but what kind of sequel does this make?

I am not saying Cray isn't worth it, but there is something to be said on replacing/fixing your supercomputer with over the counter parts.
